  • What is the best genre of photography to get into? Street photography? Wildlife? Landscape? Today I rate and roast each genre of loser photography from best to worst. Wedding photography. Does photoshopping your pictures count as real photography or are you fake? Portrait photography but you touch up the skin? BAD.

      you forgot the music concert shooters using their crappy cell phones. They're holding up their cameras in vertical mode so they get only 1 person in the band in frame, but they get everyone standing in front of them and the ceiling, instead of the entire band. And they're jumping up and down so that camera is shaking all over the pace.

    You missed out my genre - back garden photography. This is popular with people who have too much money and embarrassingly poor photography skills and spend it on expensive cameras but can’t be bothered to leave the house. They pretend they’re just comparing cameras and lenses and will one day definitely pick a proper genre when they’ve found the perfect camera which a friend of mine on CZcams used to search for (I miss those days!). My pro tip is not to use telephoto lenses when practising this skill as your neighbours may get entirely the wrong impression as to what you’re doing (according to someone I know).

Had foresight to leave city I was born in and earned enough money to buy a house with a nice yard surrounded by meadows and woods on the glacial moraine of the driftless area. My wife plants flowers hummingbirds like and fills the bird feeders. Sitting here with coffee watching morning birds coming in on a cloudy day with diffuse light. Oops, gotta go have my new (used) canon 2xII with my old (used) 500 f4 I on my 7dII and a rose-breasted grossbeak just landed on the new branch stick I put up yesterday. I can see the that some people are rightly excited to master the technical challenges astro poses. As to the outcomes I wonder how today's picture is different to the one made 10 years ago or another person's 100km away. Therefore I assume that astro's excitement lies mostly in the process that precedes the final picture which then serves as validation. But isn't that the case for all photography?

    Street creep here, lol. Street to me the most challenging because you’re not in control of ANYTHING. Not the weather, the people, the lighting, etc. Almost nobody is a model, the timing is always crucial and everything is done on a whim while at the same time being very methodical with where you’re gonna be and why. Shot my first wedding this weekend so I guess that makes me a loner as well. Thanks for the laugh, Kasey. 😂

      I'm gonna go ahead and guess that commercial product, sports and fashion photography is more demanding because there are actual requirements, no hiding behind "capturing day to day life and pulse of the city". Then there's wildlife that's a lot more uncomfortable than walking around with a latte in the city. Or astro and nightlife with several hours long timelapses that need to be set up perfectly. They reap rewards though, street photography has a low entry barrier but it's incredibly challenging to do something interesting with it. I don't think i've seen a single interesting example of the genre, really.

    • @peterreber7671
      @peterreber7671 Před 2 lety +1

      Street photography is about unique moments. Life at an 'extreme'. It requires alertness to see the moment. It is wildlife photography with humans as a subject. It is about capturing the subject's essence. That requires that one literally faces the subject in its natural and as far as possible unrestricted environment. So no pictures from behind unless the object of interest is on the back like e.g. a tattoo.
      With living things the essence lies mostly in action, a bird sitting on a branch doing nothing but sit there IMO does not capture 'essence'. Neither do the average pictures of animals in a zoo, the human equivalent being portrait photography. No matter what your genre is to transcend the boundaries so that one also captures some of the things beyond the obvious is the photographer's challenge.

      Why? You are just capturing what everyone can see. I have a simple rule for myself, a firm resolve to "not to show people in an unflattering light". I discard such pictures even if they are funny or amusing. It is one reason I keep away from shooting homeless people, beggars, etc. One needs to respect people and their circumstances. I belief if that is done then there is some instant mysterious communication and people often 'help' with some spontaneous gestures.

    Years ago when I started learning photography, I was kinda obsessed with street photography. Capturing those candid, "decisive moments".

    As a landscape and wildlife photographer, I kinda approve this message.
    Guess what, Kasey: good wildlife photographers edit a lot, too. We both subscribe to Jan Wegener, who takes already beautiful birds and edits them into epicness. Steve Mattheis and Morten Hilmer are also great wildlife + landscape shooters BTW. Check them out and mock them at your leisure.

    Wedding Photography is one of the only ways to make an honest living with a camera. Do five or ten gigs, and you're good for the year.
    But, boy do they earn it! You're constantly up-ending your routine, trying to network while also being invisible, always stressing over the next contract... Weddings chew up photographers for breakfast. I've known a couple and they sag at the memory.
    The successful ones need to have a very particular personality, and then they end up being seriously over-worked, their lives one long extended wedding party, endless tuxes and brides maids and the Pogues walking 500 miles. What does that do to your perception of reality?

    Landscape takes less skill than Street photography, I do both so I should know.
    On a serious note given your political views street photography is important as it gives a true picture of that city or town. Many countries that look to oppress their people and give out fake news/propaganda make street photography illegal because “we’re protecting your privacy” yet the same people look to spy on your emails/social media and spin you the line “if you’ve nothing to hide you’ve nothing to fear”. Street photography is truth, those that value free speech and democracy should support it

      It's not absolute though. There needs to be sensible restrictions on what ya'll can take pictures of.

    • @KieranCoughlanWicklow
      @KieranCoughlanWicklow Před 2 lety +1

      @@david.stachon did I say that? No, in fact I’ve never been a fan of super close invasive street photography a la Bruce Gilden as it isn’t a real depiction of life and it’s also rude. But absolute bans on Street photography is something that should worry people. The worst countries in the world have always had this “no candid photo” policy in common as it lets police arrest people taking photos local authorities may not want the world seeing (of protests for example, this happened in Manila just last year).
      I have seen some pretty ridiculous bad press on street photography, as I said the same people that will say it’s okay for social media to be manipulated (as long as it supports their agenda) or monitoring of emails is okay (if you’ve nothing to hide…) they make people afraid of a guy carrying a camera taking pics when all this is going on. A friend of mine was worried about street photographers when I asked him why he honestly didn’t know and then realised it wasn’t that big a deal. There are very simple existing laws to stop perverts and creeps in most countries around public decency and personal space, ie jumping in front of someone with a flash is low level assault and not something I would ever support, but then again this bad behaviour is less than 1% of street photographers.
