- World-renowned British street artist Banksy pulled off one of the greatest pranks in the history of the art world. Banksy, whose real identity is unknown, is famous for his mischievous and often satirical outdoor graffiti. Seconds after one of his most iconic works sold close to $1.4 million at a London auction, the painting fell from the frame and started to self-destruct. Elizabeth Palmer reports.

I think it's brilliant. On the other hand expensive artwork is so scrutinized for authenticity, it's hard to believe they didn't notice the shredding mechanism.
Banksy is genius!
Street art rocks, Banksy rules! Bless your offerings
look at the auction guy press a button with his right hand after he ends the bid LOL
This should be top comment
The auctioneer pressed a button after he hit the gavel
Sotheby's didn't know it would be worth more. But I bet Banksy sure did.
I love it 😍
This is great
was the shredder frame on some sort of remote control from banksy?
It was
ahmad alzghoul but nobody knows 100% for sure tho!
Tappy Toes but if it’s on remote control that means it could be controlled remotely from afar... so he didn’t have to be there in that room.
@@tifftom no one knows how he looks like so he could easily be there as a nobody, i imagine he wanted to see their faces in person lmao
Jonathan Bouis yes I know no one knows what he looks like, it’s still a mystery
My new role model 😍😍
Nonsense rich people...

how was the self-destruction triggered?
The Mona Lisa was never considered that great of a painting until it was stolen and returned. In the art world, when everyone is talking about your art, its value sky-rockets. Bansky's prank backfired. Now this piece could end up priceless. It literally could be the next Mona Lisa. For those of you thinking Bansky did this on purpose, you don't know the artist nor his art.
Strongly Agree with you
Backfired or not, his performance WAS priceless.
David Knight what if it was on purpose? Those blades don’t look like they can cut it.
David Knight are you banksy?
You know this how?
You are an idiot.
Seems like banksy or someone on his behalf would have had to be at that auction to push a button at the right moment to turn on the shredder . How else to do this? So the batteries or whatever was powering it had to still working
Put it in a glass case, frame-dangles-and-all and auction it again!
Not a prank... It was tactical. The art wasn't completely destroyed, the story around it has vastly increased it's value and now everyone is talking about him... Don't be fooled.
Mightkill Jacksome so it was cut before the painting was falling?
Mightkill Jacksome hm. So maybe the painting in the glass is a foreground and it retracts back into the enclosure while at the same time the pre-cut part is lowered out.
@@dovaiS Yes possibility
Brilliant

I believe Banksy actually deals with these auction houses himself and he's fooling everyone. There's no way that shredder would've made it all the way to the block without anyone noticing.
*NOW WORTH 100 MILLION*
Lol what if he did knowing the painting will be worth more. Yea he say its not about the money, but if you told him "ok then we will just not give you the money then" then thats a whole different story.
There's no way that was the original.
A lot of people hate modern art and consumers.
No they don't.
Yes they are.
The blades on the "explanation video" is at the wrong angle. They are all in the same plane, and way behind painting. Do people have no eyes and brains???
I’m an artist and I’ll tell you this much. Now this is ART😍
"artist"
Mr54M 👌🏽
Aka worthless grifter
Yeah big balls of fire. Mocking or preparation
Tiff Tom that concludes the auction
All the got to do, if they want, is open the frame carefully, and search for fingerprints. In the vid where he shows how he made the shredder he's not wearing gloves. That's where he went wrong.
Now, the question is: Are YOU Columbo? You're really on to something -- the clues are there.
Banksy is the Illuminati.
"Its not about money" no you want to be remembered
It's not what we all look for
Lol first
Art?
I know who got the video for banksy or it really is banksy
i have $0.91 on my paypal
The question is why was a shredder in the frame? Like why
First world jokes ...... Awww cute !
They still don’t get it.
I bet anything it’s Jim Carrey; behind the Mask.
I wouldn't pay 2$ for any piece of art
I feel sorry for you (and the sad sacks who agreed)
@@lowellcalavera6045 find a better way to launder money 🐑💨💨💨💨
All you have to do is make a simple painting then say it has some deep philosophical meaning and suddenly your a famous artists
He never claimed it to be some deep philosophy....
Richy Jones no one knows who he is 🤷🏽♂️
Fake news.
what a cheap performance
Art is stupid (like pricing and value)
My uncle is a graffiti artist in Miami (they allow street art there) he found that someone recreated his piece and was auctioning it at an art show. The lawsuit gave him 200K (he used the money to buy more paint..🤭).Dont disrespect the message.
It sold for under a million! Shows how mainstream lies for dumb reasons!
£860,000 is over $1 million
American moment
Yeah, good job Banksy, wants to shred the painting due to it being sold, makes the painting worth much more..... what a good way to beat capitalism......
