We Attempt To Break The Penny Farthing Hour World Record!

- Popular in the late 1800s, the penny-farthing is one of the most iconic bikes of all time. But how fast is it? We teamed up Guinness World Records and Mark Beaumont to see if we could set a new world record on a penny-farthing. How far could we ride one in an hour?

To be honest, I wasn't really very fond of Hank when he first came to the channel, but through videos such as this one, the stage of the first TdF video and crit racing videos, I have garnered so much respect for him. Simply a top lad and a total badass. Also, congrats to all three of you, this was just insane!
same he's won me over as well
He's my favourite presenter now!
@S R, I couldn't agree more!! It seems like it took a moment for Hank to get used to it, but then out of nowhere just put balls to the wall with these challenges and presenting skills! Definitely one of my favorites now!
Nice work, man! And I hope you're doing okay after this painful challenge!
If Hank had been born 200 years ago, he would have been THAT Captain of Cavalry tasked with passing on insane suicidal orders from the knobs at the top.
Nah not me
Hank should get a Guinness world record for the most pain suffered in an hour on a Penny-Farthing. Congrats to Chris as the new record holder!! Good on ya!
Suspiciously specific
Hank had a bad day there, respect to him for riding through the agony.
A normal person would have got off 10 mins in and restarted with a new saddle, but a normal person wouldn't be nearly as fast
@@adanielweaver looki at that china saddle? wtf like get a fucking proper saddle mate
@@iamf6641 not sure what china has to do with a crappy saddle design? a lot of well made saddles come from there.
@@thenerdycanadian7172 first of all i have one, that specific plastic uncomf saddle design. i experienced first hand that it bends and hurts cuz im hitting the metal part of the seat. i can buy one for you straight from china. do you want the link? in fact 90+% of your stuff comes from china and all the other well made saddles like fizik etc.
@@thenerdycanadian7172 you aint a nerd chap after all eh
This easily qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment... get the man a good saddle for gods sake!
Imagine if Tom last did this
These plastic saddles, just to save a few grams. I think any other saddle would have make him faster. : (
Damn cheese grater. I had that saddle for a day. Returned it to the bike shop promptly.
There's carbon ones, for christ sake, thet don't break and grate your ass and are just as light. Tough you can still get a saddle with foam and fabric for like 30g more
@@Heleninhalinda176 exactly my thought! I think Hank could have won the record if he had a better saddle.
Jesus! Hank! That's one to tell his grandchildren...actually...scratch that...I think grandchildren may be off the cards now.
đđ
One pain no man will ever judge another for crying about.
I was testing a saddle before buying and after some time my arse was completly bruised i could sit very well for 3 days iknow the pain
Amen!
I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING!!!
OnG
But some women still do.....
Mad props to Hank for making it through to the end of this. Just watching him ride was painful enough :( Also, lots of love and huge congratulations to Chris
RIP Hank's perineum, gone but not forgotten.
Taint.
me: I wonder why nobody has beaten the record.....
watches Hank suffering
me: yeah, ok that's probably why
then?
Amazing it's stood since the late 1800s. Crazy stuff.
@@KandiKlover Yeah that one technically still stands because they allowed helpers/pacers back then.
Mark: That was really tough
Chris: I know, such an awkward position
Hank: *Hold my energy bar*
Is Hank ok? I think that's the furthest (farthest?) into the paincave he's been yet!
@@jameslowsley-williams4243 You rock! Doing that was amazing. I'm very impressed with all three of you. I did my first century and my saddle didn't fit right. My groin was sore for two weeks.
the farthest into his pain cave a saddle has ever gone
well, actually both words exist and have different meaning, he didnt dive further into his thoughts but he did go farther in the tracks
Farthingest
@@Eroamagorath I am very aware of that, good Sir. It was supposed to be a pun which relates to the fact that he rode on a penny FARTHing. You might want to check out r/woosh on Reddit, friend đ
Respect to Hank, holy mother of God mate, hope you're ok! đ±đ€Ż And well done Chris and Mark! đđŒ
Absolutely hilarious, and mad respect to Hank for getting through that hour, and Mark and Chris for going blazing fast on these ridiculous bike things
Thanks Mieke!
They may seem ridiculous to you, but up until the 1880s, the 'Ordinary' or 'high wheeler' was the pinnacle of cycling. Many of the things we take for granted were invented for them. Hollow (cold drawn) steel frame tubing, wheels with tensioned steel spokes and later on, tangential spoking, drop handlebars, hollow rims, ball bearing equipped, adjustable hubs... all developed to improve the penny farthing. They were lightweight, streamlined speed machines, just like the carbon bikes of today. đ
I wanna see hank try it again without a broken saddle
Crickets ;)
Depending on what he's into removing the saddle could make it worse. Or better, I don't judge.
Yeah, I do, too. Even with all that pain, he rode a distance that was pretty nearly exactly between the other two guys.
We havenât forgotten about the triple record! If only GCN knew three cyclists who are capable of riding the track for an hour đ€
Ya I wonder who would be capable to do that challenge
Could be tuff to get Hank to come back for more.
Why do you think GCN recruited two ex pros.
âCongratulations, James...you donât get anythingâ...not even an ice pack.
Absolutely brutal. I would have given up long before him.
Poor Hank! I felt just awful for him : ( He is incredibly tough! I hope he is ok.
"On five. Five, four..."
Okay Mr Adjudicator
What on earth is the story with those saddles!!
Well done Hank on hanging in there, amazing effort, still got that competitive edge for sure, and congratulations to Chris, brilliant work sir.
I was screaming for Hank to stop in my head, I thought the metal bars were going to pierce through him
You'll be glad to hear that he's all okay!
Thank God. Looks like Hank's estate will have descendants to take on the family name. My utmost respect to Hank for smiling at the end of that route of pain, and being the first one to applaud the winner. Now there's a gentleman and an aristocrat!
PS. I bet this clip made it into the video montage at the staff Christmas party... đ
Congrats Chris. Salute to Hank, donât think Iâll even continue with such suffering. His mindset is so strong
Inspiring stuff chaps - canât begin to imagine what that was like mentally...physically, well, Hank conveyed the pain so well for our benefit, no imagination required!
Cogratulations to the three of you, well deserved well done, special kudos to Hank, that took some guts mate.
Outch, Pain, Suffering just watching this. Oh the pain, much much respect ... for u guys!
watching up to 8.30 "this looks like good funâŠlove to have a go"
watching after 8.30 "er... no, you're alright I'll give that a hard pass"
congrats to chris and mark for breaking the record and my sympathies to hank for breaking his undercarriage
Note that Hank took a not insignificant fall prior to that, and was all "NBD." Then the saddle broke. The difference in his reactions tells me all I need to know (or more than I need to know) about how painful that was.
Hank! Poor guy! Way to stick with it. You can be proud of that.
Mark, always great to have you around!
Chris, congratulations! Way to push through the uneasiness with the bike.
Thanks Bill
You guys are beasts!!
Mad props for your records and amazing team effort. All three deserve the honor for the outdoor record!
Hank, way to dig in, hatâs off mate đđ€
GUYS . . . . TOTAL RESPECT!!!!!! Hats off to all three of you, that was suffering 100% to the core and you all persevered, chapeau! Hank, extra respect for continuing to ride on a broken saddle, I am sure that was like being water boarder for an hour! Hardcore and again . . . chapeau!
Props to Hank who handled it like a boss and congratulations to Chris for the record
Respect to Hank!! Saw that pain.
Chris is too strong, must agree. He produces heavy watts with those legsđ
Another great collab with Mark B, amazing record by Chris, entertaining vlog, well done GCN Team. It's good to show that cycling is a multifaceted sport that units people from all walks of life. More of that good stuff, please!
I love road biking and both EuroSport /GCN. When I saw this, I was like... x) How bloody brilliant you need to be, to actually have that sort of idea, find time and actually do such silly thing? Great to watch... Well done!
Poor James. Incredible mental strength to get through it. Well done.
Hank ... aawh Maaate, feeling the pain. Explains why we haven't seen you for a while. Well done to you, Chris and Mark. Soft cushions in post.
Awesome effort Hank. You gave absolutely everything for that one.
Hank....That was a serious gut check. Well done to push through!!! Congratulations on the record, Chris!!!
Taken a while to get to this and it did not disappoint - seriously deranged as an event and incredible riding - and from initially wondering whether Hank and Chris had the GCN thing Iâve gone to being a complete fan ( Mark has always had it). ( That might mean respect to Lloydy for picking them)
Thanks John!
That mini rear disc đđđđ bigups to my home town too. #derbados
That was amazing, total respect. Poor Hank, looked like unspeakable levels of agony, but true grit!
More of this please. Excellent viewing. Also, Hank is such a beast.
Had to shed a tear or two for Hank, well done to you all.
PS. Did Hank get sound effects lessons from JPow
Great effort and very well done. I'm riding the NC500 right now on my Penny Farthingđ
I laughed and cried at the same time when James came off that bike. 100% RESPECT!!!!!
Congratulations Chris and much respect Hank and Mark!
Respect to u Hank, what a bummer to have a broken saddle, took some balls to complete the challenge and glad u didn't make a rash decision to sack it whilst under so much pressure đđđđ
oh my god, poor Hank. Hope you get better and recover quickly.
Holy wow! Very impressive chaps! Hank, I was in agony watching you - your created a new definition of saddle sores!
Chapeau fellas!
I am in pain after watching poor Hank... hope you are okay mate! Congrats Chris, next step, recumbent world records
Hank, you are a five star *****hero***** in perseverance
Seeing this I couldn't help my self but crying
Congratulations Hank...that will power and determination was extraordinary. I was wincing here watching you getting off the bike. Hope you're ok after it.
Amazing effort to James, Mark and Chris. Don't fancy riding the bankings on those bikes, especially with a broken hard plastic saddle digging into you for a whole hour!!! Ohhhhhhh James that must have been painful and interesting dismount! Congratulations to Chris for the new World Record. Chapeau chaps. :)
When do we get to see the power numbers?
Won't be complaining on my indoor bike anymore after seeing true suffering.
Great job!
Imagine going to the local store for some food with this
You'd get some funny looks!
There's an old fella which does deliveroo on a penny farthing in London
At the end of the day, it's still a bike. People used these to do all sorts of things on them, right up to the 1890s, when the 'Safety bicycle' had overtaken the High Wheeler or Ordinary bicycle (common contempory names) in popularity. You can still do those things today, but without the Victorian clothes! đ
GCN crew are my favorite bunch of wackos on the internet đ You actually overtook Top Gear on my list cause, well, you have to put crazy efforts into it and you are at least as good and fun.
Awesome as always!
Huge respect to Hank after riding through the agony. Hats off to Hank and Mark Beaumont.
Thanks Omaris
@@gcn You're welcome!
Keep up the great work.
This has to be the purest form of sport
Edit : lose the Lycra
Top hat, tails
Woolen tweed of course
Definitely the purest British sport.
@@Bartooc No, the British weren't the first or only country to ride or race them. France and Germany were certainly there before us. The outbreak of the Franco/Prussian war temporarily stopped development on the continent, allowing Britain to become the centre of cycling for a time. Britain wasn't involved in that war, so resources and materials were still available. We did create the modern 'Safety Bicycle' though. đ
Mark beaumont should be a gcn guest presenter
He kind of is. Every video with him has been outstanding.
My great great grandfather John Thomas Johnson made the first recognised one hour Penny Farthing record at Aston Cross grounds Birmingham on 20/05/1870. He rode 13 miles 600 yards on a flat cinder track.
Also congrats to Chris and Mark for their achievements. Great work guys!
You donât have to be mad to be a GCN presenter, but it helps, weâll done all chapeau
we'll?
Well done all! That was seriously impressive! Really hope hank has recovered and is still able to...................!!!
Hank you are amazing seriously my friend! Well done for your efforts. Congrats to Mark and mighty Chris.
Thanks for all the support Suresh
James is the most badass presenter in current lineup. Between those fixed gear rad races and this, he's a proof you don't need to be the most powerful machine to enjoy and break barriers in cycling.
mad respect for hank

are you ready?
As much as i can be.
Ok, so after five. Five, four... XDXDXD
Amazing performances on all accounts. A mate of mine once held the world slow race record on a Penny Farthing and his father did all the PF riding scenes in the movie, Mulga Bill's Bicycle. Really good showing all around. Didn't expect either of these two rapscallions to beat Mark Beaumont. Shows what I know, I guess. Also, a few months ago I was veeery close to buying that exact saddle. Seriously dodged a bullet there.
Utter and complete Respect to my brothers out there on that track!! Chapeau les mec, Chapeau !!
that would sound good in a tinder bio: "guinness world record holder on a penny farthing"
New euphemism for ED?
Damn can we all just agree that they're all evenly matched
GCN have got a new suffer master! Hank I loved see you from the first time! Great effort and GCN continue collect titles!
Thanks very much Peetinka
Fantastic achievement Mark and Chris and commiserations to Hank, hope the arse is better boy!
Mark looks like an absolute giant compared to Chris and Hank at the end of the film!
Innit true! Do the longer legs translate into an easier hour record, I wonder... Would Emma Pooley have attempted this??
No wonder, because he is a giant. 1,91 m and 90 kg of muscle and steel. That's pretty huge for anyone, let alone for tiny endurance athletes.
Hope hank finds a nice nurse to give him some tlc after this. He sure earned it
Whats tlc?

This is not the first Sunday morning I've woken up to a broken and battered perineum.

Chris on the smaller wheel too! Hank..... Oooh that nipped I'm sure. Respect Guys! đł
Are there any UCI regulation regarding rim depth and/or disc front wheels on a penny farthing? Think of the aero benefits. Not just marginal gains in this case I'd imagine
imagine a 56 inch disc wheelđ
I guess itâd be quite unstable to have such a disc front wheel. And also very heavy!
@@mscbijles1256The bikes they were riding looked fairly basic models to me, I'm sure if someone had enough money to throw at building one it could be made much lighter, comfier & aero. I guess it just depends if someone wants to push the record that much further.
@@Rick--A-F Back in the day (1860s to late 1880s) they certainly made bikes with non-round tubes. Whether or not they were actually much more aerodynamic back then, I can't say, but modern aero tubing wouldn't seem out of place on a Penny. Whether there are any builders out there who are using it is another matter... PF builders are few and far between at the best of times.
