Madness. I almost died of boredom after a few 9 hour days cycling in the Aussie outback. This must be torture.
I was cycling for a 12 hours in the summer here in Russia. It wasn't fast but I went to some places I've never been before: villages and countryside. I wasn't bored and had a nice ride with a cool scenery.
@@TheMrPalich But your scenery changed, not like in the outback where there is nothing or the velodrome which is always the same for 24 hours
Where did you ride in the Outback? I did a loop of Australia last year on a fixed gear. Apparently 4th person to ever do it - the previous 3 being about 100 years ago lol...
@@josephxkendrick Up the west coast on the dirts roads, then inland through Tom Price and Karijini. Not the 'true' central outback, but that seemed to be what the locals called it anyway because it's a desert biome. Your trip sounds awesome, can't imagine it on a fixie!
@@mpepp9 So like Perth to Karratha or Broome? Sounds like an awesome trip! Anywhere out of Perth or away from the east coast is the 'true' Outback really. WA had the biggest gap between roadhouses for me on the highway (293km). I just stuck to highways, basically following the Route 1 loop and doing the IPWR backpacking race on the way. I'm craving to go back with a more capable bike and hitting the dirt tracks!!!

Mini 4WD betting tournaments. You're welcome.
Riding around a velodrome for that length of time is an extraordinary mental feat. The degree of sensory deprivation resulting from seeing the same featureless, unchanging landscape thousands of times can drive even the most disciplined athletes insane. I understand why an indoor velodrome presents ideal physical conditions in some respects, but it must be the absolute worst place for an extremely time intensive effort. I would wager that an outdoor cycle park road coarse of maybe 5-10km with unique features, flowing curves and even a bit of gradient change would be much better for the mind. In any case, I'm very impressed by this man and by the team that supported him.
Brian Messemer the headset and communication is vital
Great point.
I would agrees... 24 Hours of Lemans but on a bicycle
The mind is not the problem, the body wants to fail when in extremes. The mind will want it more than the body, the body has to be dragged along to keep up with the minds idea. I have discovered my own mind to be powerful enough to destroy my body...which I did in RAAM....my body never recovered from that race. I finished, but the body was destroyed by my mind.

Then I did 550Km on a closed 3Km race course with some significant corners where you have to brake and can stand on the pedals out of corners and doing almost 200 laps was boring, then I did half ironman and doing 90Km mostly in aTT position was not easy. I cannot imagine doing 3000 laps at a constant speed in TT position (without even talking about the Watts required) for that amount of time even if the bike and velodrome can make you go 5 to 10 Km faster with the same wattage being in that position for 24 hours at constant speed is mind-boggling....

There is one important factor they missed out on : a sport psychologist too work on his mental side of the performance.
How does the mind overcome something as arduous and physically severe as this? I compare this to the Breaking 2 / 1.59 projects, and hear about how Eliud Kipchoge can compartmentalize the pain in his mind, and wonder can normal mortals do this?
@@moonootoo First of all I believe that every mortal human being is capable of achieving "exceptional" things. That said, I don't think a lot are willing to put themselves through this kind of agony.
Your comparison with the B2 project and the way Kipchoge runs his long distance race by judging it as short distances in sequence is a great way of comparing these kind of feeds. The only real difference is time, even though 2 hours of running at 21kph is tough it is nothing compared to driving 39kph with a bike.. For 24hours!
The athlete in this video is an extreme cyclist who does long distances so I think he deemed himself worthy for this prjocet. The only thing he did not keep in mind is surroundings. There's a huge difference between driving through massive landscapes or riding circles and seeing the same building over and over. Once again I really believe that they did not put enough effort in looking at the mental side, I really feel like the athlete should almost put himself in a state where he is addicted to the idea of achieving this new record.
Lastly I still think his performance deserves a clap of hands because whatever the reason for him to stop the project, he still drove around 12 hours!!
@@Spirit_Matters.Arthur Great response and thanks. I am particularly intrigued by the athletes who do ultra events and how their minds overcome and endures the pain. In high level marathons someone once described the mental strain as putting your hands in a fire together with the other competitors and seeing who will withdraw their hand first!
I agree, surely he shouldnât least be able to listen to music, e-books, the radio, etc. But I also wonder if there might not be a way for him to watch movies on the straights, or something, without losing focus on what heâs doing. Or there should be away for him to receive messages from fans around the world and have conversations.
