How to Replace Tailgate Lift Support Struts

  • This is my detailed procedure for easily replacing weak or failing lift struts on tailgates and is the same for lift gates, hatchbacks, trunk lids, and hoods. These gas charged devices are also called lift supports, shocks, and strut arms whose purpose is the support the weight of the liftgate and make it easy to open and close.
    Be sure to have a helper hold the weight of the door or use something sturdy to prop it open like a long piece of wood or a step ladder.
    For a few dollars in parts, why pay someone else do it when you can do it yourself!

    I find this video very helpful, I have managed to replace my rear door within 10 minutes just by pulling those clips at both end and no need of unscrewing. If I did not know those clips I would have gone and remove the lights and unscrew and all that for no reason. Great video.

    @StarTurtleZero Před 7 lety +23

    Great instructions...it was a 10 minute job! I removed the bolts on one side initially but found it was easier to pop the tailgate side off first then the strut could fold down to gain access to the clip without unbolting. Of course, this will vary from vehicle to vehicle but wanted to share my experience. I had a first generation Mazda 6 hatchback.

      Worked like a charm, I purchased the struts on line @ amazon, about $20 each, since I didn't have an extra set of hands to hold up the lift gate, I went to Lowes and purchased a long handle that painters use, which worked perfect (6'-12'). Popped off the brackets and popped on new struts in less than 5 minutes, life saver...not to mention $400 if I had done at the dealership. Your video was spot on, thanks so very much...

    Thank you for this video -- very helpful. I didn't have the PVC pipe that you had, but you do need something pretty tall so I used a 6 foot stepladder. Make SURE you've got the ladder well positioned before you start the job. And, as you said, wear eye protection and gloves. You do have to extend the tailgate up pretty high so if you're not tall you might need someone to help you push the tailgate up while you snap in the new struts. This took about 10-15 minutes and now I'm back in business! Thanks again.

    Excellent demonstration! I have been driving with the tailgate dropping on my head for an embarrassing amount of time and finally bought them from the parts store the other day. I read the vague instructions that came with them and didn't have a clue as to what the clamp was or much less how to remove it. I actually thought I would going to have to call my mechanic. Sigh. Took me about 10 minutes start to finish.

    Great DIY video! Long time shade-tree mechanic here since high school. Saved a fortune on auto repair over the years. Just replaced the two lift supports on a 2005 Ford Focus ZXW (wagon). No removable mounts, so used a plastic mallet and a piece of wood to pop the ball-socket joints apart and back on. Nice not having the hatch fall on my head anymore. Central area of CT, so the lift supports suffer in colder weather. Love looking up DIY repairs on CZcams to see what others have experienced and get suggestions. Next project is the hood lift supports for a 1996 Toyota Camry. They have specific Left & Right hand supports, these will be a bit pricier.

    Thanks, I was able to change them in 10 minutes 🤙. Having the struts on there you don't realize how heavy the liftgate is. Make sure to prop the liftgate up with something before you start to remove them. I tried to use a piece of 2x4 that I had been wedging in between the hinge area, and without the strut it's too much weight. Thanks again.

    I've been trying to replace the struts on my trunk lid for three weeks. I have the correct struts with the same part number, but no matter what I do; they are about 1/8-inch too long to snap on. Picked up a shop clamp that compresses the gas piston just fine, but the clamp design restricts access to the mounts. Unscrewing the brackets from the car seems unintelligent, but I may have to try. The brackets are a compound design that includes four different sections and heavy-duty springs.
