Liftgate Support Strut Fix | Toyota Highlander

  • How to fix the liftgate struts that have failed and worn out. We are doing this on a Toyota Highland model year 2008. The rear tailgate does not open all the way when you press the open button. This Toyota Highlander comes with a power assisted rear tailgate, but the two struts on either side have lost their strength over the years. This process is really quick and requires you to remove only 8 bolts total.
    Having the rear door not fully open can be a huge pain in the butt. The liftgate on the rear of this highlander still opened about 80% of the way, but in the colder months it gets much worse. For a quick and easy fix you can have the rear door opening all the way back to the top!

    FYI You don't have to remove brackets to replace struts.

      Yes you actually do - because the OEM struts are permanently crimped onto the bracket. So you either have to buy new struts AND brackets, or, CUT the balls off the old brackets (with a dremel, etc) - it's a real shame Toyota used struts that are so much trouble to change.

      Typically the ball joint cup thing has a spring clip that you pop out with a flat screwdriver. This allows the cup to come off the ball

    No entirely sure, but I don't think you are supposed to use the electronic opening/closing functions with these types of struts?

    • @HardwayLearning

      I'm not sure I follow. The car came with struts in this exact location?

    • @philliptaylor5981
      @philliptaylor5981 Před 2 lety +1

      I own a 2nd gen Highlander and have been wondering what type of rear hatch struts my vehicle calls for (the electronic OR gas strut). I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think you are supposed to use the gas powered struts with the automatic rear liftgate open/close function unless you have the electronic struts. You are demonstrating how to install/replace a "gas" powered "manual" strut which may be the incorrect part and damage the motor that lifts and closes the rear hatch. You may want to update your video and let people know that they may need to disable the automatic open/close function on their highlander if they go with the manual struts you are demonstrating???

      The Dan tool can handle about 4 torques on a good day, there is no silent option, but is not a slave to Amazon.

    How did you separate the bracket with the ball from the strut? You didn't show this and I'm having a real time of trying to separate the two. I'm stuck. Thanks for any help.

    • @HardwayLearning
      @HardwayLearning  Před 3 lety

      If I recall correctly there's a metal piece on the back of the cup that you pop upward and off with a flathead screwdriver

    • @GilRom
      @GilRom Před 3 lety

      There is a small pin, see for example czcams.com/video/f6DxO_FV9Tc/video.html

      @stinkycheese804 Před rokem

      Use a small flat blade screwdriver, pick, or needle nose pliers, to remove the metal spring clip on the back of the ball cup/socket, then if the ball does not easily come out, put down cardboard to protect the surface, and pry it out by lever action of the screwdriver blade, but usually no prying is needed if the clip is taken far enough off.

      I'm not sure about that, my guess is they would have to be larger to support the weight, the effort to change it out to a single would probably take more time than it's worth.

    • @HardwayLearning
      @HardwayLearning  Před 3 lety

      These came with new balls, you could just pop them off and run the original ball, but I don't see how that's any safer?

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 Před rokem

      Depends, if your replacements don't come with brackets, then it is more economical to reuse the existing ones if the welding on them is not failing, rather than buy brackets separately, but if your new struts come with new brackets already on them, might as well use them, is just as easy to remove two bolts as it is to pop a clip off. However, when you discard the old worn out struts, you might still want to take the old brackets off and keep them if in good shape, in case the new brackets later fail.
