Best video I've found. Simple and peaceful. All you need is some Kenny G playing in the background. Lol. I just received 2 little plants and didn't have a clue. I just put my leftover organic seeds or not used produce in some dirt. I'm learning how to do it right this year. I should have some sort of CZcams diploma for everything I've learned so far. Some things I never even wanted to know. On my own in OKC. It's fun. Thanks for this.
william mcduff we try and use every bit of the garden however we have so many greens from other plants that it becomes to much at times! So we tend to just compost them so we can put the nutrients back into the garden in the following year! Thank you so much for watching our videos and I appreciate the suggestions.
The caterpillars and worms sure liked mine! It looked like it could be eaten like collards so thanks for confirming that for me. I composted them this time.
Couple other advantages...leaves not touching soil helps with disease and pests and removing leaves allows easier aphid detection and ability to use stream of water to knock the lil buggers off!
Just cut the leaves off and put them in a Ziploc bag and freeze them. I just put them in as whole leaves when I freeze them. Once you take them out I only put them in smoothies because if you try to cook with them they will just turn to mush.
holy shit, they get that big? im raising 6 ( my growing brussel sprout cherry Will busted) i live in apt, using what space i have, and ill have 6! that size. im so glad i found this vid, i read they grow 30 inches in height , however not needing that space . thank you for this vid and tips, ill figure out something b'cause i love my brussel sprouts
Matthew Thomas thank you for the view and comment hope the channel helps! If you have any questions or advice please share great gardeners think alike!!!
Matthew Thomas Where in Oregon do you live? I live in Beaverton, Oregon. I just started planting Brussels sprouts indoors from seed on February 29, 2020 and they germinated on March 9, 2020 (9 days to sprout), I go to a community garden in SW Portland and will plant the Brussels sprouts when they become starter plants.
They look so healthy and green, do you have any problems with butterflies and pigeons? I have to have mine in a brassica cage, otherwise they would be decimated.
Another channel, When they do a video like this. They prune , then wait until the time to harvest. Film that to show what effect it had. on the size of the Brussel sprouts. You could leave two plants un pruned to show the difference it made.
Thanks so much for the vid and info!!!! Just wondering is there any other pruning before they get that size mine are only still pretty small should I do anything before that size or just leave them to grown
While a leaf is still increasing in size the plant my be putting energy into it, but soon the leaf pays that back, photosynthesizing and sending the resulting energy to the plant. That's what leaves are FOR; that's why plants make leaves. Removing the leaves may indeed stimulate growth of the sprouts, but it's NOT because the leaves were stealing engery.
but are we not taking away its feeding , first time I tried this and hopefully I didn t kill my husband crop,he ll have me for supper if that is the case we live in short summers so for Oct they should have finished for us if we get no frost please answer
My Brussel Sprouts leaves look amazing but there is not a single sprout. Can I still cut them and then will sprouts grow? I live in South Georgia where the weather right now goes between the 60's and down as low at low 30's.
Sandra Maier yes we do top them about 3-4 weeks prior to harvest as this allows the plant to put the remaining energy into the Brussels not new leaf growth.
This is my first year growing Brussel Sprouts and I had no idea until recently that they should be pruned! I’m in zone7a and have had the worst luck with zebra caterpillars and whitefly infestation on my plants. Any tips? I’d love to grow them again next year but I don’t know if it’s worth it with these pests!
You will start to see the Brussels sprouts forming at the armpit of the leaves. This is where the stalk of the leaf meets the main stem. When the Brussels sprouts start forming it’s time to allow the plant to put its energy into the sprout not growing taller.
First video I found that was clear as to when to trim them. It is my first time growing them so thank you.

One thing to consider is use those brussel sprout leaves to do stuffed cabbage leaves. Very nutritious or you can cook them alone like collard greens.

Thk u
I am glad I found your video, thanks for that. And my leaves go to the goats or compost depending on the condition.
Thank you! So helpful!
Thanks for this :) and i also will be adding beans after pruning!
We like to freeze the leaves and then add them to smoothies.
Thanks for this,i didn't know it can be used for cooking
What's the trick to freezing the leaves
How do you freeze them? Whole?
Just cut the leaves off and put them in a Ziploc bag and freeze them. I just put them in as whole leaves when I freeze them. Once you take them out I only put them in smoothies because if you try to cook with them they will just turn to mush.
Very clear informative video, I’ve just used your tips for my sprouts
Helpful- thanks!

Those leaves compost pretty quickly also. I just take a large handful and twist them to shreds, then drop them in the composted.
Very informativr
Yummy Goodness Leafy Greens Super Food 💚
Shred finely add to Stirfrys or cook till tender as Kale and Cabbage 😃
I👨🏿🌾 used the leaves to cover the Soil, help trap in moisture, and nutrients as the leaves decomposes.🤜🏿🤛🏿😎

Ta im growing the first time thay about a foot high i decided to cut bottom few leaves today . Thanks for your info
What are the grey aphid like little bugs in batches . They dont like power spray with hose

Good vid..almost like tomatoes prune the left and direct energy to the fruit/ veg. Taking less space
Thanks so much for the vid and info!!!! Just wondering is there any other pruning before they get that size mine are only still pretty small should I do anything before that size or just leave them to grown
Just let them Grow!
OH, no. Am I too late, the srputs have already form. Can I still trim them?
Isn't it best to cut the leaves off at night so there is no longer any photosynthesis chemistry going on?.
What fertalizer do you give them?
What do you use to keep bugs away
sprouts are growing very open and not forming correctly where iv cut the leaves off????
I am growing brussel sprouts for the 1st time and when do you trim back the lleaves in june ? when will the sprouts form?

I let the leaves on and end up with all petite brussel sprouts that are the best I've ever eaten.
@@mervinpeters3072 Yum!
Hi i m sorry to ask this Question,Pls how long it takes brussel sprouts to be fruit
but are we not taking away its feeding
, first time I tried this and hopefully I didn t kill my husband crop,he ll have me for supper if that is the case we live in short summers so for Oct they should have finished for us if we get no frost please answer
How tall are plants supposed to be to prune them?
MY LEAFS SEEM FALL OFF OR BREAK BY TOUCH IS THAT NORMAL WHILE THE VEGI GROWS
My Brussel Sprouts leaves look amazing but there is not a single sprout. Can I still cut them and then will sprouts grow? I live in South Georgia where the weather right now goes between the 60's and down as low at low 30's.
Yes topping them will definitely promote the plant to stop putting growth into height and put in energy into sprouts
As the brussells grow do u top them for a couple of weeks b4 harvest?
Sandra Maier yes we do top them about 3-4 weeks prior to harvest as this allows the plant to put the remaining energy into the Brussels not new leaf growth.
Thanks for that question. Good to know!

Keep a fine mesh net over plants to keep the cabbage moth from laying the eggs that hatch into cabbage worms
Insect barrier
Wish you would have said to leave a shelf to sit on in the beginning :(
How do you know when to start trimming?
You will start to see the Brussels sprouts forming at the armpit of the leaves. This is where the stalk of the leaf meets the main stem. When the Brussels sprouts start forming it’s time to allow the plant to put its energy into the sprout not growing taller.
Those Brussel greens are great eating kind of a waste to just throw the away.
I've heard that but never tried. Thanks for sharing 👍
You can actually eat leaves I want to add them to curry stew
Can you grow a plant from a brussel?
No unfortunately you can’t!
Are those leaves edible?
They are indeed and quite delicious!
@@GardenofEnders wow nice to know
