    Best video I've found. Simple and peaceful. All you need is some Kenny G playing in the background. Lol. I just received 2 little plants and didn't have a clue. I just put my leftover organic seeds or not used produce in some dirt. I'm learning how to do it right this year. I should have some sort of CZcams diploma for everything I've learned so far. Some things I never even wanted to know. On my own in OKC. It's fun. Thanks for this.

    One thing to consider is use those brussel sprout leaves to do stuffed cabbage leaves. Very nutritious or you can cook them alone like collard greens.

      william mcduff we try and use every bit of the garden however we have so many greens from other plants that it becomes to much at times! So we tend to just compost them so we can put the nutrients back into the garden in the following year! Thank you so much for watching our videos and I appreciate the suggestions.

      The caterpillars and worms sure liked mine! It looked like it could be eaten like collards so thanks for confirming that for me. I composted them this time.

    Couple other advantages...leaves not touching soil helps with disease and pests and removing leaves allows easier aphid detection and ability to use stream of water to knock the lil buggers off!

      Just cut the leaves off and put them in a Ziploc bag and freeze them. I just put them in as whole leaves when I freeze them. Once you take them out I only put them in smoothies because if you try to cook with them they will just turn to mush.

I just started planting Brussels sprouts indoors from seed on February 29, 2020 and they germinated on March 9, 2020 (9 days to sprout), I go to a community garden in SW Portland and will plant the Brussels sprouts when they become starter plants.

    Another channel, When they do a video like this. They prune , then wait until the time to harvest. Film that to show what effect it had. on the size of the Brussel sprouts. You could leave two plants un pruned to show the difference it made.

  • @MartinMMeiss-mj6li
    @MartinMMeiss-mj6li Před 3 lety +2

    While a leaf is still increasing in size the plant my be putting energy into it, but soon the leaf pays that back, photosynthesizing and sending the resulting energy to the plant. That's what leaves are FOR; that's why plants make leaves. Removing the leaves may indeed stimulate growth of the sprouts, but it's NOT because the leaves were stealing engery.

    • @GardenofEnders
      @GardenofEnders  Před 2 lety

      Yes topping them will definitely promote the plant to stop putting growth into height and put in energy into sprouts

    As the brussells grow do u top them for a couple of weeks b4 harvest?

    • @GardenofEnders
      @GardenofEnders  Před 4 lety +3

      Sandra Maier yes we do top them about 3-4 weeks prior to harvest as this allows the plant to put the remaining energy into the Brussels not new leaf growth.

    This is my first year growing Brussel Sprouts and I had no idea until recently that they should be pruned! I’m in zone7a and have had the worst luck with zebra caterpillars and whitefly infestation on my plants. Any tips? I’d love to grow them again next year but I don’t know if it’s worth it with these pests!

    How do you know when to start trimming?

    • @GardenofEnders
      @GardenofEnders  Před 4 lety +1

      You will start to see the Brussels sprouts forming at the armpit of the leaves. This is where the stalk of the leaf meets the main stem. When the Brussels sprouts start forming it’s time to allow the plant to put its energy into the sprout not growing taller.
