- People end up in the ER for a lot of dumb, dangerous reasons -- which is why we consulted an ER receptionist to talk about everything ERs all over would love to tell their patients about health, medicine and sticking things up their butt... if it didn't threaten their job security.

I felt like an idiot for going the the ER after a spider bite, but I was also going thru chemo and didn't want to survive cancer just to die of a spider bite. 😂
Chemo and a spiderbite? Sounds like the beginning of a new Marvel hero
Edit: jokes aside, hope you recovered!
@@houseplant1016 oh, I made tons of jokes about it, you're great. When they removed the cyst/tumor, they kept saying "it might not be cancerous", I joked "I'm hoping for an absorbed twin!" Nobody else laughed.😂 I'm two years out of chemo and almost normal again, aside from missing a few things!!
@@amandagoldsbury8122 😂 as a med student, I would have given you an extra pudding ;).
Well not in Canada...😂😂❤
@@locholoco Wait, does Canada have brown recluse spiders?
Not sure if its just a hiccup; but I am the original person interviewed for the original article back in 2015. Ryan interviewed me and we put the article together. They did some editing I wasn't fond of, but the overall gist of the final product was true to my experiences.
ER's are crazy. Healthcare in the US leaves a lot to be desired. If you have time, try to research your rights as a patient, but at the same time, don't hesitate to seek emergency medical care if you really think you need it.
(My orinigal comment was removed. Maybe because I linked the original article? Just thought it'd be nice to mentioned the authors.)
Lol
Over $5k in bills to get prescribed an oral antibiotic for a MRSA skin infection. Viva Las Vegas!
CZcams automatically removes comments with links. It sucks for discussions because those are the only comments that cite their sources
Yeah. That was what I was thinking. And I'd figure Cracked knows that, so it's surprising they don't like the original article in the description. @@LowestofheDead
I remember I once went to the ER because I was very sick and couldn't stay awake for more than 4 hours a day. The doctor I saw refused to do any tests other than a covid test. And I ended up having to call multiple doctors offices in explain what was going on before one let me in. He did a bunch of tests on me and found out I had an infection that was killing me and if I had delayed treatment by even a couple of days I would have died.
Cracked is supposed to be comedy. It is sad when reality and comedy are one and the same.
Is a joke , we are the punch-line
Comedy is shared pain plus timing. Plus truth is stranger than fiction.
Amen.
I ended up in an ER with a back injury and an electrical burn some years ago. Which one is worse? They asked me. They are both getting worse I told them. Well the ER can only treat one condition at a time and the back is more important than the skin according to the ER. So I had to get discharged after a back xray and then go back in to have my electrical burn assessed. They tell me I needed a primary care for treatments and gave me a phone number to state health which would choose the location I would get treated after a two year wait and a bill from the IRS for not being insured at my job building a hospital. Was that ever a hard thing to go through. Really altered me for life.
BS
I remember this one being really tragic. Puts my personal troubles (and misdemeanors) in perspective.
Only misdemeanors? You ain't trying hard enough!
@@franklofarojr.2969 only counting convictions! But I love how you are thinking.
worst situation I had in the ER was when I got cut with a meat cleaver at a restaurant that didn't provide hand protection for us to butcher meats (aka major employers comp for restaurant not providing us with state required ppe and being made to do that with no training on top of that so they could save money on meat) I still had to pay out the medical bill at the ER cause noone bothered to get the employers info while I was there. you know while I had a massive wound in my hand and was in shock from having a cleaver bust open my hand. even though I was able to explain the situation later the owner bailed while I was getting treated without giving their info and the hospital told me I didn't need to worry. I was 19 and unaware at the time so they got away without having to pay up. though I still have a scar on the part of my knuckle that didnt heal right cause they had me butchering without proper gloves still the day after getting out of the hospital.
This is not accurate. A physician does not decide whether or not you are treated. EMTALA is a law that you touched upon. EMTALA was enacted by Congress in 1986 as part of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) of 1985 (42 U.S.C. §1395dd).
EMTALA was designed to prevent hospitals from transferring uninsured or Medicaid patients to public hospitals without, at a minimum, providing a medical screening examination to ensure they were stable for transfer.
This law requires Medicare-participating hospitals with emergency departments to screen and treat the emergency medical conditions of patients in a non-discriminatory manner to anyone, regardless of their ability to pay, insurance status, national origin, race, creed or color.
but....its the physician that evaluates the need for treatment under those rules. those physicians could be managing up to 20 or more patients at a time. treatment in the emergency room and treatment in the hospital are two different things as well. if a physician decides to not admit you, the treatment in the ER will be very limited. you are right, the ability to pay for this treatment is not a factor but for many other reasons people often do not get the proper care and end up having terrible results.
the united states medical system is straight up broken. the only people who receive adequate health care are the rich who often belong to a concierge physicians/staff group who are on call 24/7 just for them. sadly, we now see politicians and insurance groups reducing the benefits of Medicare. this will mean that senior citizens may have to declare bankruptcy due to medical expenses. making money off of people's health is repugnant and in the united states it is abused to the detriment to people who need it. we get worst results while paying the most money per capita in the world, ridiculous.
Yes. "Emergency" being the operative keyword there. Anything not deemed a medical emergency by the attending physician doesn't qualify.
It's good to see Winston Rowntree is still working with Cracked. Now when do we get a new season of People Watching? It's long overdue.
Gotta love the link in the description that leads NOWHERE. Top tier, Team!
So, I had to file medical bankruptcy many years back. At the time, it was not true that hospitals would take any payment amount for your enormous bill. With the way billing works, I owed about 5 different entities enormous sums, and they all wanted *at least* $100/mo in payments. When I told each one that I could not afford that (because of how quickly it all added up), they all literally just told me to file for bankruptcy. 🤷♀️
They still do that then lie about it later...they still threaten to involve police too..that you will be arrested for "theft of services" if you don't come up with thousands...they will then claim you made it up if you call them out...those "all calls are recorded" policies always seem to have technical glitches too when they do this....and it gets worse if it goes to collections
This amazing having these animated short back!
Having to wait to be seen is annoying. I had like, forever because I abdominal pain and I thought I had appendicitis. It turn out to be a kidney stone. But damn.
Crazy things is they are so paranoid about liability even if you had a person with a medical degree and license working in that position they still could not tell you any medical opinions! Hazards of cooperate medicine.
Tort reform might help.
You present this like it should not be this way.
Thanks again
This isn’t an accurate representation of how the ER works. Like, not at all.
You are triaged by a nurse. That’s the person at the front desk. A medical professional. Who cannot diagnose, but has to evaluate the seriousness of your presentation. Then a physician or NP or PA comes around, does their own evaluation, and you’ll either get admitted… Or treated in the ED. How quick you get treated depends on the current state of the ED- if its busy, and you aren’t dying, you’ll have to wait. If you’re getting admitted, you’ll get a hospital room as soon as a room is available.
I think it depends on the area the area you live in. Florida is probably the worst.
I used to be ER registration at night. I was 20 with no experience. There was no nurse out with me. They would sign in and I would put the paperwork back there and eventually a nurse would come triage. If it seemed emergent I would make sure someone came out right away.
In that order…?? No, you first wait, and wait, and wait…
Another excellent animation by Winston Rowntree.
lol nice Pills jersey
Ohhhhh _American_ Emergency Room. I thought this was going to be an insightful video on medical issues and quirks in ERs in general, not about a place in the world where you might as well get medical help from Dr Seuss or Dr Dre because it'd at least be cheaper.
I'd like to get help from Dr Dre. :)
Yeah, can 100% confirm, someone used my stolen ID to visit an ER in a city I'd never been to, and guess whose MOTHER ACROSS THE COUNTRY wound up being mailed all the bills because I was homeless 50 miles from the hospital I "visited" at the time.
Laughs in NHS...
No Healthcare System?
Cringes in Canadian system with our 12 hr emergency room waits and crisis level doctor shortages
Voting blue. This is insane!
Is this a re-release?
I wish cracked actually did their research for this one.
Then it would have been even more depressing...
We know, you're Cracked. Not knowing anything is your whole thing...
I can avoid bills because I live in the UK!
Yikes on the blatantly wrong information here.
HOW ABOUT $20B THAT WILL FIX HOMELESSNESS, BUT WOULD RATHER SEND $200B IN AID TO RANDOM ASS COUNTRIES?
Ive never been to a doctor and dont have insurance, but i have a question, if i break my leg or something, what exactly happens? Do they tell you to go away if you cant afford it or what?
You’re entitled to treatment for emergencies (like a broken leg). They cannot turn you away. They will hunt you down afterwards to get their money but because you don’t have insurance they will likely work out a payment plan like the 20/month kind. They are able to drastically reduce the price bc they receive federal funding. Might I ask why don’t you have insurance?
@@MentalBloopers Self employed, have a bad health problem that makes me unable to be somewhere for 8 hours a day or whatever (major depressive disorder). I get by but barely, live in California and everything is extremely expensive.
@@MattH-nd9qk The ER will also send you a bill with the "rack rates" on it, which is what they bill to insurance. They'll try to tell you that that's the price for the care you received. In reality, the actual rate is usually a fraction, sometimes only 10% or less, of what they bill. Hospitals are generally more willing to knock down the bills from the rack rates though than other providers, but it won't stop them from at least trying to get you to pay first.
Since you lack insurance, NEVER let any bloodwork/labs get sent to Quest Diagnostics. They will NOT budge from their rack rates unless you meet their low income guidelines. E.g. you'll get billed $300 for a simple test that normally costs $12.
"the ER is a lot of fun for the hypochondriac who can afford it"
So I just had a completely different thumbnail with a completely different picture take me to the same video. The funny thing is the likes and comments on the thumbnail aren't even the same as the ones after you hit the video link. How and why are they able to do this?
I like how its called "horrible realities" but none of these seem like a bad thing.
Not accurate. A nurse is always in triage.
This one is wildly inaccurate, research emtala, I work at a hospital, everyone knows this law, we can sued heavily if we violate it
Hospitals have been steadily closing since the 1980's. Yes, a few were made during the pandemic but there are people who will declare medical bankruptcy and will show up at the hospital again and again. That is why rural hospitals are shutting down or being bought out by larger health systems.
If you've ever been to a large ER before, you will learn nothing from this video and should skip it. I just wasted 4.5 minutes of my life on it.
And yet this guy gets more $ than is funny...
Things like this make me glad I do not live in the USA
And like so many people in the comments are saying, this isn't accurate. It obviously depends on how urgent the problem is. If someone is bleeding out, theyll be stabilized immediately. But someone who doesn't even know their problem, but is walking around just fine, can wait to be diagnosed by an actual doctor and not some guy at a counter, because they don't require being stabilized....
Moreover, you're comparing this to other nations. Who simply call objectively worse care "free". But they still pay regardless, meanwhile they actually will die waiting in line for a doctor who knows even less than Cracked. We should probably keep our system. Its better to admit we're paying a lot and actually get our lives saved. Than calling it "free" when its not and then dying for that lie....
Walk in with a heart rate of 160 or more (they take initial vitals right away) and you are suddenly high priority. Even if otherwise appearing fine.
I remember when cracked used to be a comedy channel and not a misinformed propaganda Channel
