  • General Kai was the brother of Oogway, the tragic war hero who was erased from history, and the most powerful enemy the Dragon Warrior has ever faced. As a spirit warrior, Kai was able to unleash chi upon the Mortal Realm, but how did his life exist? Why was he corrupted by chi? And why did he want to destroy Master Oogway’s legacy?

I feel like they rushed the backstory of Kai in short time. It was said that he ’wanted the power of chi' to himself. There was nothing, nor anything that explained that it would tempt him in the first place. Beforehand Kai did not hesitate to bring Oogway up to the panda village for days, without food, or water, he didn't ask for any of those things, not even money. Couldn't have said it better myself. All they had to do was give a little reason as to why Kai went bad. Just something to make us understand him more.
They could have explained that all the wars he's been in drove him a bit nuts and he was desperate to stop the fighting. He wanted more power from the pandas and asked for it, but they refused because he had enough. Not wanting his friend Oogway to be fatally wounded ever again, he forcefully took chi from a panda, but Oogway saw this and stopped him. Kai would beg for him to take this power for the greater good, but Oogway wouldn't have any of it and then the fight would commence.
Dammit, anything to make this character more interesting. Kai's supposed to be the "final boss" of Kung Fu Panda and he just fell flat. A cool villain to be sure, but not enough substance.

People think Kai is lackluster because they don’t understand the implications of his backstory. Why did Kai start taking chi for himself? Why? He was a CONQUEROR. He immediately learned to use chi and used it for what he’d always done. He only cared for his brothers in arms like Oogway. Oogway didn’t want Kai to hurt the Pandas because Oogway was finally waking up to himself. He learned compassion for others Kai never learned. Kai thought Oogway was on the same page, which is why he believed Oogway betrayed him.
Kai and Oogway really need their own movie. Kai is probably the most compelling villain. He was forgotten by history, betrayed by his only comrade on a journey he thought they shared in, and still presses forward even when revived.

The scene where they read the scroll containing the story between Oogway and Kai is a breathtaking view of the Chinese ink-related art. As a Chinese I’m amazed by the detail in the background, specifically, the multiple Chinese character handwriting.
Someone made all of them out and it says the following:
    写于九千八百九十三年:
    (Written in year 9893:)
    天煞与我本歃血为盟,有兄弟之约。
(Kai and I smeared blood as an alliance, and were sworn to be brothers.)
    昔日我等均为义军之将领,讨伐逆贼。
(We were both generals in a army for justice and fought rebels who opposed the country.)
    天煞军骁勇善战,所战皆捷。
(The army of Kai was both brave and fierce, any battle fought ends in victory.)
    贼军每逢天煞旌旗,闻之魂飞胆怯。
(The enemies tremble with fear when they witness the war banner of Kai’s)
    一场混战中受伤,天煞搀扶我撤退。
(Wounded in a battle, I was carried by Kai in a retreat.)
    忝日来到宁静山谷,谷中彩蝶翩飞,麦穗迎风。
(One day we arrived at a peaceful valley, a valley where butterflies fly and the crops flourish with breezes.)
    小桥流水,如桃花源般之世界。
(With bridges and streams, a world out of this world.)
    此处村民乐天知命,一片祥和无邪。
(The villagers here are content with their lives, harmony and purity all around.)
    天地间涌动着一股气场之美,村民善用气,以气让我筋脉复原感觉。
(The world around pulsed with the beauty of Chi, the villagers had great mastery with Chi, and they used such mastery to bring back my feelings.)
    此气为万物能量,生命本源之轮回。
(This Chi is the energy in everything, a circulation in the foundation of lives.)
    此时,天煞性格骤变,欲将气夺回。
(It was at this time, that Kai suddenly had a change of mind, and decided to take the Chi.)
    兄弟阋墙恩断义绝,多年情谊竟见血。
(The brotherhood shattered, years of friendship, blood was spilt.)
    一场惊天动地之江湖厮杀。
(A brutal combat began, which shook the world, heaven and earth alike.)
    天煞最终不敌浩然正气,败战弃械。
(Kai was no match for the Chi of just, and was defeated with weapons gone.)
    我将天煞贬入灵界,永世不得返回。
(I banished Kai to the Spirit Realm, never to be returned.)
    昔日我等恩怨字字含泪,行行泣血。
(As I remember our past, every word flows with tear and every line cries blood.)
    乌龟道人,作于宁静山谷
(The Taoist Turtle, wrote this in the peaceful valley.)
The storytelling actually went a little different. The handwriting version mentioned the army was to combat some rebellion, and both Kai and Oogway were leaders of that army. And it wasn’t an ambush, it was just a complicated battle. There was no “Ancient place of healing” lore, only “a place out of this world”. And the Chi teaching was not even mentioned in this version. The instructions about “master of Chi” also doesn’t exist, instead Oogway expressed how much it pained his heart that he had to fight his best friend, and essentially killing him in the end. The fact that Oogway called himself a Taoist was not in my expectation, I thought he was just a Kungfu master with Taoist wisdom.

Kai had so much potential to be a fantastic villain for Kung Fu Panda. He had interesting powers, a unique fighting style, a well done and intimidating design, had fantastic fight scenes, and was portrayed excellently by J.K. Simmons. What holds him back is his lacklustre backstory. It was so close to being good. His friendship with Oogway and dedication to save his life was very interesting. Then Kai decided to go bad for literally no reason other than wanting power, deluding himself into thinking that Ooogway betrayed him when he himself betrayed Oogway's trust by doing something so heinous. It was extremely random and made me question how Kai could have even been considered a brotherly figure to a person as pure and kindhearted as Oogway.
It also didn't help that Kai was treated as a joke throughout most the film, bringing down his intimidation factor. Yes, Lord Shen had funny scenes that made him look somewhat pathetic, but he was still shown to be a pure evil psychotic monster who scarred Po for life. His parents literally died of heartbreak from the atrocity he committed against the pandas. He even killed his right hand Boss Wolf, who may have once been his friend since childhood according to some sources. Shen's ruthless nature made the audience understand how much of a threat he was while Kai left people wondering who he was and why he was relevant. Po's final fight with him at the end (while visually fantastic with an incredible score) made him look even more like a joke. Tai Lung's final fight with Po was also ridiculous, but he was taken seriously and was a clear threat throughout most of the movie where as Kai wasn't.

Li (who actually is a good character) and Ping were the only important characters aside from Po. Shifu gave up being a teacher with little reason (when Po never even asked for the position mind you) and the Furious Five became glorified henchmen for Kai. Even Tigress was thrown into the background, her talk with Po at the Panda Village not doing anything for the characters or story. Lame, man.

When looking at Kai's full story, it can be seen why Kai used the techniques of using chi by stealing it from others. Upon witnessing how Oogway was nearly killed by their enemies, Kai saw how he wasn't invincible and that the thought of losing his brother in arms really struck him hard. Kai stealing chi from others was his way of making sure that no one could ever hurt those he cared about most again, but Oogway didn't see it in that way.
Perhaps if the two had talked it out then Kai wouldn't have felt that Oogway betrayed him when he banished him to the spirit world. Kai saw a way to protect Oogway by making sure that no enemy could ever harm them again.

I got a completely different message. When I first watched the third movie I understood that they were warlords. Warlords are not nice people. I took from it that Oogway and Kai were conquering Chinese provinces. When Oogway became injured I saw that as Oogway learning to give rather than take while Kai continued to want to stay on the same path. I think it gives Oogway deeper characterization by making it to where Oogway could be just as lost and greedy as others, but learned from it. I don't know. That's just how I saw it in the movie.
I did like your other analysis though. His anger at being erased from history. His perceived betrayal by Oogway.

Here’s my idea for changing Kai’s motivation: after surviving assassination and carrying Oogway for lord knows how long: he wants to end all wars in China before they even happen. And When he’s introduced to Chi, he finds a way to do so. His goal is to create an invincible army of warrior s with strong chi, even after death. The difference between him and his old friend is that Oogway learns to trust in new generations and let things be. Kai does not; he fails to realize the more you take the less you have.

If you kill your enemies out of your fear and pain you are going to spread that fear and pain to your enemies loved ones. Oogway knew for Kai to understand his path was was not the only way, he needed to see someone who shared his fear and pain but choose a different path to deal with it, Oogway could never be that person . I think Oogway also could not face Kai causing that pain and fear in others, so sending Kai tp the spirit world was the only way he knew to protect the valley of peace and China from Kai.

He saw his abilities and his popularity and that seed of competition started to fight him. And it only deepens when in the pandas. Maybe they can show a story that Kai tried to study chi but couldn't do it but Oogway is improving. So when he discovered he can take chi he thought finally he can be more powerful than Oogway.
This story can be connected with Po's message of Who Am I. Because you can't be yourself if you try to be someone else. That's why Kai can't master chi. Because he spent his life trying to be Oogway. Because of jealousy and competition

Point though for making him without any real feel sorry for him, sympathetic traits and not an opposite of PO. When he meets his old friend for the first time in 500 years he is ultimately saddened because he has not changed and he has not learned from his past mistakes and he has let his anger, quest for revenge and power consume his heart ♥️ leading his downfall as Oogway told his old friend “When will You realise that the more you take the less you have” this is because he knows that the more Chi Kai takes the more set in stone his Destiny is. Very great video and explanation. Being Kai my main favorite Kung Fu Panda villain, mainly I always thought that his obsession with taking the chi of kung fu masters might stem from a fear of becoming irrelevant, forgotten or in a certain way he was doing it for a good greater purpose as it was to protect those who he cared most about, like Oogway to be hurt ever again. Basically he wanted to become more, because he felt very vulnerable and thought that he wasn't unbeatable. Also, by the other side. The jade blades that Kai wields may symbolize his emotional armor. They could represent a psychological barrier that he has constructed to protect himself from the pain of betrayal and loss. Finally but not least. Kai's transformation into a spirit warrior and his quest for chi may represent an identity crisis that he suffered from. Since his original identity as a warrior and friend to Oogway is lost, replaced by a desire for power and dominance. This shift might be a coping mechanism for dealing as well with his perceived betrayal.
By the way, I do really liked the scenes where they portrayed the story of Kai and how he appeared on the chinese ink art painted scrolls. Which gave it a sense or touch to be something very more ancient, than the storylines of Tai Lung and Lord Shen.

I hope they make at least a short prequel film about oogways past life because I think he used to be an evil warrior but was enough by the pandas aiding him and I think the movie can delve deeper into Kais backstory and why he became overcome with greed for the power of chi maybe he wanted to protect oogway or maybe Kai wanted to get stronger in the quickest way possible to never feel weak again

That's power of the yin and yang symbol in the kung fu panda trilogy, and the series...
Kai's stragglers as a friend, wanted to get stronger to protect his friend Oogway was the good in him, but the path he took was the wrong way, and at the same time, Oogway wanted to make kai realize he was wrong, but he made a choice to fight him and lead to kai being hurt and forgotten,
every one had they're beliefs and ideas but world only knows black or white, so we all assumed that kai was a bad caracter right from the start. yet he had good intentions.

Kung Fu panda as a trilogy is really good at writing villains, in that no one believes they are evil: they often actually have the purest intentions, but experience a 'snap' that raises the stakes and forces them to do evil to achieve their ultimately 'good' intentions.
Tai Lung and his relationship to Shifu, Shen and his fear of Po, and Kai trying to save the ones he cares for - all of them are misguided and fearful.
People aren't evil because they want to be, people are evil because they think they're doing the right thing. A blinding belief of knowing what is best for all is perhaps the most terrifying ideal a person can have

Why was Thebes such a troubled city?

The thing that separates Kai from Shen and Tai Lung is that Po would have had to face him whether he was the dragon warrior or not. Shen could have been avoided if Oogway hadn’t picked him and Tai Lung and Po wouldn’t have met in the first place if he was never dragon warrior, but Kai specifically wanted to take the chi of all pandas so their meet was destiny.

I’m a little late with my comment by two months but might as well comment. I honestly think Kai lived up to the last villains and wasn’t downhill.
His backstory is what a lot of people look down upon because it seems so lackluster, but in reality, looks can be deceiving and it’s hinted throughout the 3rd movie that it’s different than at first glance and I think his motive made complete sense in KFP3.
Kai being good in the first place actually has less evidence than one might think but let’s look at his titles.
“Supreme Warlord of all China, The Jade Slayer, Master of pain. Beast of vengeance. Maker of widows.”
These aren’t good names are they?
Oogway is leading a great army. Kai is a Supreme Warlord Does Oogway support this? Most likely if he loved him like a brother and fully agreed on helping Kai lead this army this says something.
Now this isn’t exact proof a good guy could have names like that but here’s the thing. The whole motivation on power doesn’t come out of nowhere, the Kung Fu Franchise makes it clear with it’s writing decisions that they don’t throw things in for the sake of it especially with their main villain. Kai was perfectly fine with wanting the power for himself, when Oogway kicks him when he steals the Chi Kai doesn’t look at Oogway like “Darn! He caught me!” No. He has a genuine face of confusion and surprise, this says something. This implies Kai didn’t expect Oogway to actually attack him which means something like this is normal and for Kai to be surprised should imply this isn’t the first time Kai has sought for power.
Let’s look into it deeper there are quotes throughout the movie but pay attention to this one.
“I fought by his side… I loved him like a brother.. and he… betrayed me…”
The face Kai makes after that is a genuinely sad and upset face so he’s absolutely telling the truth. This proves Kai was genuinely betrayed when they didn’t follow through with taking the chi from Kai which hints that it was normal and Kai was shocked he betrayed him for that.
There’s also the fact that Kai and Oogway were in a war and that they were just ambushed with Oogway almost dead from it. So realistically in that situation, Kai would’ve wanted to have the power all to himself so he could take revenge on that army that ambushed them hence Kai’s title “The Beast of VENGEANCE” It’d make perfect sense for Kai to want power if he’s leading an army trying to defeat the other. Now, why did Oogway betray him? Well, let’s find out.
Oogway brother in arms with a guy wanting power to destroy another army he probably wasn’t the peaceful nicest turtle we see nowadays. He was perfectly fine with Kai’s decision as they were brother in arms after all who wants power to destroy the opponent's army. But the difference here is while Oogway agrees with Kai, Oogway just visited a peaceful Panda village who taught him differently like giving Chi this is actually where Oogway could’ve gone to the Oogway we know and
love today as the Panda’s on-screen are shown to be good genuine people. So Oogway likely changed as a person here, but Kai didn’t go down the path like Oogway so he stuck to the way they once saw by using their power to destroy the opposing army but Oogway betrays him in his mind as he has changed this is evident by the colors where Kai is Green which symbolizes evil while Oogway’s aura around him is yellow which represents good if I remember correctly. After defeating Kai this sets up a big motive for why Kai is the perfect villain in Kung Fu Panda 3.
Po in Kung Fu Panda 3 is trying to learn who he is. Hence the entire movie he talks to his friends and family which he even references who he is in their final fight. The thing with Kai is he attacks you on a psychological level he takes your friends and family and uses it against you.
Now the motive why the hell doesn’t he just torture Oogway and kill him? He’s the only one who betrayed him. It’s simpler than you think. The army and legacy Oogway and Kai fought for was ruined and ripped to shambles. Oogway banishing Kai likely meant the entire army Kai was so desperately trying to help support to defeat their enemy is gone while being betrayed by his friend. As he is the Beast of Vengeance, with Kai’s memory destroyed as he says he wants to do the absolute same to Oogway. If Oogway destroyed what they fought for and their legacy then Kai was going to destroy his legacy by destroying everyone who loved and used his Kung Fu as well as the Panda’s who changed him.
This not only is a good motive but sets up why he’s so dangerous. Kai’s extremely powerful and it’s built up arguably to the same amount as Tai Lung. I can tell they didn’t want to rip off Tai Lung so they made him comedic which fits the flim. The very start establishes him as strong where he defeats Oogway and every master who ever died which would include Tai Lung this already says that he is going to be extremely powerful. Later on he takes our Master Chicken, Bear and Mantis easily and we don’t even see him, the quiet atmosphere as he appears and as Master Crane is seen helpless against Kai. Argue all you want about him not being intimidating but he’s a damn Well threat. Then he is mentioned to have taken every master in china’s chi, then takes down the Furious Five and Shifu and now is coming after the villagers. And the worst part he isn’t going to stop till he finds you, and he is fully motivated to finish you. You can’t hide. Po could’ve avoided Tai Lung he could’ve just not ran up to the Jade Palace, Shen he could’ve just escaped and left Gongmen since Shen was planning to take over China as his main goal while Kai… he’s going to find you no matter what.
How well does he connect to the movie? Quite well.
“The more you take the less you have.”
Is something Kai never learned. The whole movie is based on relationships and learning who you are. Po never stole the power of anyone around him to defeat Kai he was granted it by them. If Kai was like Po those Panda’s would’ve granted Kai the Chi to help him but instead Kai stole theirs. Kai never valued relationships for the people around him like Po so he was blind when Oogway said that line.
In conclusion it’s a sad story for Kai. He never knew how to value the people around him other than himself and Oogway and only viewed power in others for his benefit. He never realized what harm he caused and he lost everything cause of it. His sanity, his best friend, his army, fame, legacy, etc. If Kai learned how to value life around him, he could’ve very well been beside Oogway teaching at the Jade Palace. It was too bad Oogway never reached that level of wisdom to save his friend.
And that’s why I think Kai is a masterfully well written clever villain.
Also I loved his voice, fight scenes, entrances, etc that all made him an even better villain. In my perspective, I think Kai can happily sit beside Shen and Tai Lung as groundbreaking villains.

@@KingAshtray No problem. I’ll just sum it up. Kai is tragic because he never saw the chance to change, and assumed that his friend just betrayed him for no reason. His relentless quest for power without getting to learn the path Oogway went on was sad, because all he wanted to do was fight an ambitious quest with Oogway and get revenge on those who harmed him. He feels so betrayed that he feels the need to destroy Oogway’s entire legacy as he believes Oogway built his own to replace his. This cost him everything, and it’s sad he couldn’t go down a path like Oogway could.

Deeply, the movie is about Chi and healing. It is about the healing force of spirit and lifestreams. In a secret valley, Kai learned about Chi from the Pandas. Eventually, the only way Kai could be defeated was his attempt to straight soul steal Po in his golden form. Similar to Indiana Jones Golden Cups and humble woods. Another famous healer is Wolverine, only he could survive the skeleton surgery.

Ke-Pa is stronger than Kai, since he actually nearly defeated Oogway *IN HIS PRIME* and nearly killed centuries later Po. This guy should have been the final villian of the series as he would complete the trinity of the animal types I just like to make here: Mammal, Bird and Reptile.
Afterwards we would have gotten an Amphibian, a Fish and a Mollusc to complete another trinity .
For the Arthopods, we would ge a Worm, a Butterfly and a Crab to complete that set and nit necessarily in that order.
