Great review sir, purchased mine as Merry Christmas to self at Walmart under $50, i agree That am already attatched to this one and will prefer it over any other fixed blade i own, love the sheath too yes its cheap but if it ever breaks ill have a nice leather one made.
@JayAlbertz Luck guy to find it under $50 at Walmart. I just bought mine. It was the display model. It still had the box and accessory strap, but it was $62 before taxes. But once I held it in my hand I knew that's what I wanted. Holding other knives by Ka-Bar that I was interested in, the Gerber Prodigy grip felt sweet in my hand and balances perfectly at the hilt on the tip of my finger. The blade design is not one that I typically go for because I love the tanto points, but the way it felt in my hand the first time I held it, it was like love at first sight.
Still one of my favorite knives and you can still get them online from Walmart for $54. I have two with the plain edge and one with the serrated edge. I also have the Strongarm but I prefer the grip and sheath on the Prodigy. I modified one of the plain edge Prodigys by sanding off the top guard and rounding off the lanyard to make it more “bushcraft”. I got the idea for this from Magnus Anderson. He has a bunch of videos on the Prodigy and shows what the knife is capable of.
I just got one mailed from my mentor up in Connecticut. He shared this video with me over messenger, and I've watched it from beginning to end. I'm really proud to have this knife, and to know that it's capable of so many things, and that one of them is being sturdy! Thank you!! You have a new subscriber, and a great and hearty thank you!!! 💪💪🔥🔥🔥🔥
That's fantastic! I'm originally from CT myself. The knife will be something you have for a long time. My advise would be to get a good edge put on it, then it's a breeze to maintain sharpness. Have fun and be safe my friend.
Not a bad little knife. I recently got a Strongarm and was very impressed by it. I want the Prodigy too, but can’t stand the serrations on the main cutting edge. I didn’t know Gerber made the Prodigy without serrations until I saw this video. Now I gotta go find one. 😉
I have the Strongarm, and if the Prodigy is even close to being as good, then it's a great knife. I absolutely love my Strongarm..it's pretty much bomb proof. Nowadays, it seems if a knife is under $100 bucks, people dismiss it, but there are a lot of really good budget knives out there. Just found your channel through Woodland tactical..he gave you a shout out on IG..like what I see..ya got a new sub!

That was a good review. I am not a fan of Gerber, but I am poor, and just bought this knife. Mine came razor sharp and the finish is flawless. Anyone that complains about this knife at this price is crazy. This is a good knife, period. I hope things are turning around for Gerber, I really do.
Hi Nick Laws great review, I just happened to find your review because I was interested buying a Prodigy. I currently have the Gerber LMF right now and I wanted a Prodigy. I took your advise and found two Gerber Prodigy's at my local Walmart, I bought both of them. Your right buying knives is a addiction. A man can never have to many knives. Thanks again for the hot tip.
Awsome review on this knife brother. I baught one about a month ago and put this knife thrugh hell n back. Batoning and digging and chopping it never failed and held an edge really good. Afterwords I liked it so much I went back to wallmart and baught a 2nd one. But now I'm waiting on the strong arm to come out.
Almost ordered that knife once upon a Time myself. Used to be a stable Gerber guy. Still love my Gators. Ended up ordering the esse 5, I think they're about the same. Good review bud.
Shasta valley outdoorsman I used to use the first Gerber gator way back as a deer skinning knife because it’s awesome edge and grip as well as a great belly to the blade. Had to make sure and clean and lube it well though or the high carbon steel would rust.
Great review, you did a fantastic job. I seen these at Walmart in the past couple of weeks so they must still be making them, probably because they are great knives. After debating on the Strongarm or Prodigy, I chose the Prodigy for two reasons, I liked the sheath better and it was cheaper. I like the fine edge so much I bought the serrated edge also. Thanks for sharing.
I bought mine from Wal-Mart without doing any real research on it. It was reasonably priced and I was willing to take a risk on it. I can testify that it is indeed a good knife to own.

I wish they had given the Strongarm the same sheath the Prodigy uses instead of the crazy sheath with all the different snaps, clips, and bullshit. I like the Prodigy but the Strongarm seems to fill my huge hand better. It’s just that damn sheath that kills me
While not made for it, it makes a great throwing knife for anyone who might be wondering. If it can stand up to a bunch of failed throws with nothing but a few nicks in the grip it should be able to take a beating.
Even miss treated they soldier on i picked one of mine just to put through torcher test and honestly it's made believers of me and others can't beat a full tang Gerber product

Blade is a little over 4 1/2 inches. If you have a nice edge on it you could get away with this being your only knife. Hey is it legal to have a knife attached to your belt exposed in a sheath in california in public? From what I understand its illegal to conceal it, but IT IS LEGAL if you have it exposed in a sheath
Good knife, mine is on my hip everyday. Put a nice edge on it when you first get it and it doesn't take much to maintain it after that. Enjoy man, it's nice because of the price your not afraid to use it, but it will do anything you ask of it.
@@OutdoorLifewithNickLaws Absolutely. Thank you for the advice and review. Even though I only spent $53 vs $73 for the Strongman or LMF 2 Infantry knife, this will do just as well as the other two. Thanks again.
Mine was not very sharp out of the package. Paid the same for a buck that was sharp and had a leather sheath. It sharpened up just fine. Got it just cause it looked cool will not use it for hunting will use any of my zillion Buck knives for hunting though.

Even miss treated they soldier on i picked one of mine just to put through torcher test and honestly it's made believers of me and others can't beat a full tang Gerber product
Had one left at my local Walmart for $42!
I found mine for around that, recently I've seen them up around 70, good find
WHAT DO YOU THINK 4YRS LATER NOW? I STILL PREFER IT OVER THE STRONGARM.
That's a nice fire starter/flint. Do you have a link to that?
I have a prodigy in mint condition unused I got a few years ago and I almost want to keep untouched just for the hell of it.
Good idea
I have hundreds of knives that I am afraid to get dirty too. My wife really hates my knife addiction! Oh well!
Picked up one a few months ago from walmart but it was at around 60 here in hawaii
Great knife
Is the rubber handle wearing down on your knife? Looks like it the top part.. just curious.
It hasn't worn down at all, just discolored from use, if I can get some time off work to do some filming, lol, I'll make an update video, still going strong, still use it regularly...thanks for the feedback
@@OutdoorLifewithNickLaws Thanks man... i want to purchase the knife at the local walmart here, theres one left but typically the morons that work there cant find the key to their knife case..smh.
@@Mr76K1976 I hear that. Walmart is one of my least favorite places to be for sure. Have a great day man...
still going strong, handle is still 100%
Happy with the purchase and review butb2 years later git the tan at Walmart.
I have this knife out of wal mart very sharp ,, but I like my blades razor sharp so I sharpen it razor sharp my finger almost came off , you can still buy it at wal mart , have many.
Have prodigy a very very good knife and tool and weapon 😀 👏 👍 the knife saved my life truly a great knife weapon 👏 😀
Blade HQ has them on sale $34.99 as of August 2023.
How long is the blade and will it do everything u need it to do for a bushcraft outing
Blade is a little over 4 1/2 inches. If you have a nice edge on it you could get away with this being your only knife. I bring at least 2 on all my trips for redundancies and it allows me to keep one scandi grind Bushcraft knife nice and sharp and for fine tasks, and something like the Gerber for heavier tasks.
Ok thank u for the info
Just bought the exact knife at Walmart for 49 bucks with the sheath....
Just picked one up tonight from my local Wally mart, $49. Solid build, great balance. Time to beat the sh out of it.
Just bought one my buddy has one and he doesn't go know where without his.
It's still kicking, I bring it everywhere also. It's in my last video.
Walmart still carries them bought one today
Hey is it legal to have a knife attached to your belt exposed in a sheath in california in public? From what I understand its illegal to conceal it, but IT IS LEGAL if you have it exposed in a sheath
You should be able to look it up, I've checked here in MT and you can basically wear a sword if you want.
I just bought one
Good knife, mine is on my hip everyday. Put a nice edge on it when you first get it and it doesn't take much to maintain it after that. Enjoy man, it's nice because of the price your not afraid to use it, but it will do anything you ask of it.
@@OutdoorLifewithNickLaws Absolutely. Thank you for the advice and review. Even though I only spent $53 vs $73 for the Strongman or LMF 2 Infantry knife, this will do just as well as the other two. Thanks again.
I have one an am going to buy another
Mine was not very sharp out of the package. Paid the same for a buck that was sharp and had a leather sheath.
It sharpened up just fine. Got it just cause it looked cool will not use it for hunting will use any of my zillion Buck knives for hunting though.
Prodigy has worth with the price.
But the steel is so soft.
When I was use it to cut the toothstick, I showed that the blade of prodigy was n
hurt.
Is the sheath ambidextrous?
Picked up the last 2 in Walmart las week sale 2 for 50
I'd carry a sharpened piece of coke bottle before i'd carry anything wearing the Gerber brand. They have proven their lack of quality over and over again.
My old cult leader had a knife like this.
Hey is there a knife sharpner built into it?
No sir
Rockwell hardnes is 55 to 57
Thanks, wasn't quite sure, I forgot my cheat sheet.
@@OutdoorLifewithNickLaws no problem and it's obvious you have great taste in knives you got a new sub
I got me one hard to find my cuzin sent me this video
Still at my Walmart for 62.00
thats a hollow grind not a saber grind lol
