  • ArtStation can be a slippery little bugger at times. There's a horrible moment of eerie silence after we upload our masterpiece and we can just sense the lack of f**ks given by the community/algorithm or whatever.
    But, over the decade I've been doing this, I've come to notice very obvious patterns that no one is talking about. So let's dive in to ArtStation and get you more likes!

    That sounds like an insightful video, Andy. I've encountered a similar issue with my profile where the reach isn't as high as I'd like, but I'm not losing hope. Sometimes, starting from scratch and putting in the work pays off in the end.

    thank you so much for this advice, inspired by your words im going to paint a sci-fi landscape for 2 hours after my client work each day and upload it to see what happens! dark sci-fi environment paintings I feel im most comfortable with painting, never seems to be a problem to come up with these ideas so ill choose this subject.its funny in my early days I did accidentally did this process while I was learning, I would set myself monthly challenges like "an environment sketch a day" or " a portrait study per day " I think the online world just loves consistency. my art station is currently all over the place, mix of guns, environment, characters etc. ill let you know my results in a few months time haha. thanks again Andy!

      Cheers man, do let me know how you get on and if it brings you results. I would definitely caution against being all over the place in terms of content type. I just made a video last night which will premiere today and that touches upon the idea of a consistent theme in one's work. But that's kind of about social media vs ArtStation. I think I need to do a follow up video to this which talks specifically about the art itself.

    Part about posting one image instead of many was very unexpected. As a 3D artist, on the contrary, I want to post a lot shots from different angles. I'll try your advice, thank you!

      well be careful because if you're a full on 3d artist and NOT an illustrator/pictorial/concept artist then you are likely supposed to show multiple shots.

    Thank you for the tips! I was doing most of it wrong. I took note and I will implement those for the next uploads. I don't know why people prefer to see a 3D scene that looks like a painting instead of the 3D scene itself with just the necesary touches. But whatever, if they want paintstrokes, paintstrokes they will get.

      cool, let me know how you get on! 3d just looks fake is the thing. I see it a lot in junior portfolios. You can also make the 3d itself look less '3d' by making sure its less perfect. Then again, go over it in photoshop. :)

    Really interesting. Thank you. Actually portfolio readying would be a cool idea for a class, which I know there are already those, but it does seem like you have some really good insights and are not just saying what others are. That is a great point about speed as well, as a way to possibly make up for not being the absolute top.
    Also I am 3d environment artist and have been thinking of adding 2d skills to be able to make it concept like. And this seems like even more so a good idea now.

      hey there. I'm not too sure that adding 2d work would be too wise if you're trying to get work as a 3d production artist. It might confuse your portfolio as no one who's going to hire an environment artist is going to hope that you have 'concept-like' skills. But, to get more attention/likes, i would keep it 3d/Unreal etc. but make sure you're fully designing and building everything. I think a lot of environment art that looks amazing, lacks attention because other artists are looking at it and going: yeah but what did they actually make or even design in this shot? if you can show that you made a nice concept-looking (but again, 3d) piece, like an epic landscape with a castle etc. then it'll look nice in the thumbnails etc. vs "here's what the environment team handed me and I merely assembled in Unreal" kinda thing :)

    Good vid, Andy. Some things came to mind after watching that I'd love to hear your thoughts on:
    There a lot of concept artists I follow like Vitaly Bulgarov / Alex Senechal that work very heavily in 3D that are very successful at getting likes on their work. I reckon it's got a lot to do with them taking advantage of the medium by making them akin to product design showcases with incredibly careful lighting setups and post-processing.
    I believe the core issue might just be that a lot of artists get caught halfway, with having the 3D be not as carefully handled for presentation, and then being unable to fight it with the photoshop work rather than leaning into one or the other to maximize final quality. And of course it helps that they are superlatively good designers, but I don't believe they're succeeding in spite of the 3D.
    Even for larger environments, artist like Piotr Krynski and Paul Chadeisson do excellent numbers with incredible work, again with very heavy 3D use, with little to no brushstrokes. And again I think it's taking advantage of the medium whether it's the utilization of 3d Scans to dull the rigidity, scale, processing etc.
    So generally I'd agree that for a lot of us that come from the 2D camp, harnessing the 2D with a bit of 3D help might help assure a fast and quality outcome, but I've been really fascinated by watching these guys that have fully embraced the 3D absolutely killing it.

      well, yes. The thing is, if you absolutely kill at 3D then you're going to get the likes regardless. Vitaly is a bit of a machine though. Very few people get to his level. But for the typical concept artist, unless your 3d is impecable, and your design work too, then it'll be hard. Plus, it can also be about efficiency. I know I could do some killer stuff in 3d if I spent 2-3 weeks on it. But (slight tangent) it would weaken my client retention skills because I'm not focusing on ideation/sketching but also that's 2-3 weeks I could be churning out quicker work. I reckon the stuff I talked about speaks to the struggling artist more than the top 0.1% :)

    Wow, guess I've been doing it wrong for the longest time. It seems I need to quit doing those super hugle long-term projects and work on putting out more finished single images instead. And yes, I've also experienced this weird trend of people prefering 2D-looking artwork over 3D, even when it was done completely in 3D...

      make a new square document and paste your landscape (or whatever) image into it and move it around.

    I thought for sure you were going to talk about color. That's what Andreas Rocha has, great colors in his paintings even if he's on a shorter time limit. And that nice color works in the thumbnail.
    I think this is what most 3D renders lack. The color and light just isn't anywhere near as impressive as something a good painter would make.

      I didn't want to get into the art side too much as that could be its own video. What I would say about colour is that a unique use of colour will help. It's something I keep meaning to use.

      Depends. If you need sketches for a client brief, humans currently win because AI can't fulfil client briefs. So you'd end up with 50 images that were all wrong. And then let's say the client picks one of those as a starting point, well then AI can't take specific instructions, so again the human wins.

    the most important part is to have a unique idea or take on something. taking that gothic theme and doing that giant doughnut was cool. the samarai theme was well executed but there was nothing new idea wise. after all this is concept art. sure posting more can be a way to gain vis but post too much and you become annoying as well to peoples feeds. i would add to this pay attention to the pieces that people have liked you already posted. if a piece hits elaborate on it a bit and see if you can discover something new in it. expand on it. as for 3d or 2d well idk for me is it something new...novel interesting...does the piece say anything? the rest is just smaller details. maybe explore something in 2d. if it hits then do some 3d on it in later posts but not before. fix your 2d weak point.

      I should actually do a part 2 to this where I talk about the actual quality of the piece itself. I think the reason I focused on the general 'posting science' is because there's only so much you can know about how a piece will do. I have a 100% track record in guessing wrong. And I mean 100%. If I think something will do great, it'll do bad, if i think it won't do well and almost don't upload it, it'll do great. So to some degree, the piece itself can barely be controlled. But all I do know is that making a piece for 3 weeks vs one piece per day, is a sure fire way to lose likes, if likes/followers is important. And if you're desperately unemployed like I am, then you gotta get fast.
