- Learn how to paint loose, evocative, subtle digital paintings from scratch!
I used to suck at painting loosely, but over the years I've finally figured out how to be efficient with my brush work and now I want to pass that knowledge on before I die of old age!
I'll show you how I painted this dark fantasy illustration starting with the loose line work and building up to simple forms using my personal method for dummies (like me!) to create believable characters and environments when you would otherwise be out of your depth.
What you'll get:
3 x 50-60 minute videos (condensed down from about 9 hours) narrated over with my thought process when painting thumbnails in Photoshop.
1 x bonus videos in real-time explaining a my simple 'posterize' method for building up forms easily.
Brushes that I used in the painting (although I only used a few, they are effective at loose paintings)
A few custom shapes to get you started with those background character silhouettes.
Tool presets for essential smudge brushes to get that loose, painterly feel!
18 WIP progression steps
Screenshots of my pure ref board
A larger resolution close up of the main character
Dive in and learn how to paint!

@Andy Walsh, How are you doing man? Not had a video for a while, hoping that means you've landed a gig?
Hey man, sorry I didn't see this comment. I had landed a little work but not much. Thanks for checking in! Back to being unemployed right now.
Let's goo !! Can't wait for it :D
This just got recommended to me. I love finding underrated artists ❤
I'm looking forward for this as I aspire to be a concept artist in the industry!
Cheers man! I gotta always warn though, before you set out to become a concept artist, just watch my other recent videos. Please do that.
@@AndyWalsh Will do! It's been insightful so far
This video went straight to my heart. My only will is to learn how to digital illustrate in 2D from my imagination (I'm a long-standing writer of genre fiction: prose is my actual art).
One of the things I struggle more with is to paint loose. I hate to not being able! The outcomes of my efforts are overrendered, yes, and therefore rigid, with that synthetic feel that ruins everything.
So, I just bought your tutorial. Thanks Andy.
Hey man! aw I'm glad you got it coz maybe this can change things for you. Please let me know if you have any questions and if it helped at all!
@@AndyWalsh I will, Andy. As an amateur I don't have so much time to study and practice, but illustration's really became a passion in the last two years. So I am willing to.
I just published a 2 minutes video about what I did in the past 2 years - for my readers. But if you're curious to see how stiff and overendered I am (ahah!), you can easily understand it - and see how much work and study I have to put into this before achieving some decent pieces. @@LoScrittoreDivergente Ah yes, I think I see. It's about letting brush strokes themselves define something vs painting out every little piece. Even if it's abstract. I like the word 'ness'. So you don't paint a crowd of people for example, you paint peopleness :P
@@AndyWalsh Ahahah! Exactly. And that's where Andy Walsh came in abruptly… Let's see how much I can benefit from your tutorial. I appreciate your effort.
Is this good for beginners?
I would say so, but it kinda depends on if you mean complete beginners or people who have been drawing and painting a little while? (sorry for late response!)
N-n-nice!
Cheers Yuri :)
Bought it! I can't paint anything in under 30 hours, and I'm a dumdum with textured brushes. 🤣
nice Wendy, as I said to the other person who was having similar struggles, do let me know how you get on! Feedback welcome.
@@AndyWalsh Definitely has some interesting ideas I hadn't thought of. 👍
