  • This year in 2024 I got to 22k Instagram followers passing the 20k mark which is a bit of a milestone. In this video I'll share with you how I got there and how I could have got there quicker, posing the question: why should we artists even want to get there?
I didn't use any algorithmic tricks, nor did I upload very regularly but I did consistently hone in on how to present my work.
As an artist on instagram in 2024 it's vital to learn how to grow your brand on social media now that tech job across the board are being destroyed by the thousands or even tens of thousands.
In this video I make how to get more instagram followers a little more straightfoward as an artist.

I appreciate the real talk man. Making money is a fact of life artist or otherwise. There is always that never ending push and pull of making art for self exploration / exploration in general ,and for money.

great video ! can you make video/talk about rates for freelance jobs vs comissions vs bigger cliends vs smaller ? plus maybe what prices to have for prints and so on - it would be great to know your opinion about it

Hey there. That's a tricky thing to talk about because with the industry collapsing I'm sure rates are changing a lot. So it then becomes a very tricky thing to broadcast that. For prints though, you kinda need to ask yourself what you're ok with earning. For me, I can't be earning less than 10$ per print profit. Ideally more.

I think it's wonderful that you put this content out even though you haven't figured out everything just yet i.e., doing all this research but haven't really concluded if it translates to any kind of sales or benefit. Like you, I also weigh out if building a following on instagram is a good thing for me, for one, it's incredibly taxing for me, compared to making youtube videos (i got pretty far into it before I eventually stopped). Right now, I'm blessed with a comfortable job as a 3D animator for advertising but of course that may not be the case for long once SORA comes into play

Thanks for the feedback. I think 3d animation will be safe for years. It's too hard to control AI, and I'm sure you'll know just how tightly art directors want to control things.

Thinking about the follow count of a hash tag is a new concept to me. Excited to try it out! Great tips over all, thanks for this video.

Early on in the video I had the question of what these followers are supposed to allude to and I'm glad you adressed it, I also share your sentiment at around minute 19 in the video. I have those thoughts on the regular and it is interesting you brought it up it, it got me thinking about it, thanks for sharing.

cool, thanks for the feedback. Yeah it really only dawned on my this year - why am I chasing followers? They don't actually mean anything unless I actively have something they want! I mean, their 'companionship' or however you could see it is valuable of course, the community etc. but that's not primarily why we strive for follows day after day.

Thanks for the hashtag breakdown Andy I see a lot of artists trying to get around the IG algorithm by posting reveals of their painting as an IG story or video post. I'm sure you've seen it where the artist flips the canvas around to reveal the painting and then zooms in. As a computer artist you could do the same thing by doing some 2D moves in After Effects on your still image and posting a video instead of a still. I need to try this myself.

well, for me videos don't get as much traction as stills.

@@AndyWalsh The algorithm changes all the time so you might try it. I think your work is uniquely suited for limited animation.
      Cheers!

Doing art all day, living with your mother and eat cornflakes is a privilege i'd say haha

it's like the monty python sketch: eating cornflakes? Luxury. We used to eat our spare Keyboard keys.

Loving this information! With the current state of the video game and animation industries, this kind of content is really needed. I wanted to ask: if someone is starting from zero on instagram, would you recommend they post multiple times a day to get started?

      @AndyWalsh  Před 3 měsíci +1

well, sure if you have the materials to upload. Figure out if there's a good time to do it. But be careful of spending all your art beans, like if you run out of art to upload in 2 months kinda thing. And thanks for the feedback!
