  • The moment you've all been waiting for! This is it guys, a full deck tech for my undefeated Esper design from the 2019 Old School World Championships. This deck was constructed for EC rules, with unrestricted Strip Mine and restricted Recall. It was the culmination of three solid years of research on the format, and almost 30 years of experience with the game. I hope you all enjoy it, thanks to Sam Tang for helping so much with commentary and production!

    In depth and thoroughly enjoyable! You're thought process regarding card selection is both solid and provides flexible answers for the myriad of decks encountered in OS.
    I'll be optimistically looking forward to your future analysis of The Deck in the 1 Strip, 1 Factory Gentlemen's Rules (Banned Library and Mind Twist) version. The hybrid build of yours and Nates suggestions for Paladin went undefeated in 3 consecutive round robin events after the re-introduction of City of Brass to the mana base. I wish there were greater tournament support for this format, as it seems to allow a wider variety of strategies and cards to shine.

    interesting concept of valuing every card at around 4 life, my interpretation is that you can still recover when your opponent has 1-4 cards advantage over you considering that some may even be lands but from 5+ it starts to be backbreaking. thanks for your wisdom sir!

    Thanks for the amazing insights! Been watching your content on the deck for many years and it never gets old. This format is so interesting and deep compared to other formats. Thanks for all the effort you put in to this :). Question concerning the Ivory Tower, have you ever considered playing a few copies main deck? Gaining 3/4 life every turn kinda acts like gaining a turn against factories or other creatures giving you more time to gain resources. What are your thoughts on the card? Best, Lorenzo.

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hey Lorenzo! Thanks so much for your kind words, they mean a lot to me. I have used Ivory Tower main in the past, as recently as the 2018 Vegas Old School Championships. I think the card is excellent, and it can really lay waste to some of the more narrow strategies like mono red and U/R burn in particular. But it is extremely awful against control, as well as against mono black. I consider those two decks more dangerous overall than mono red and U/R burn, particularly later in the tournament. When I play an Old School event I'm aiming to win the thing, which means 1. getting past the randomness of the early rounds, and 2. beating the control decks later. Keeping the Ivory Tower in the sideboard is a better way to achieve that, on average. Thanks for your great question, and for watching the channel 😀

      @@Thebrianweissman Thanks Brian for the response and info. Considering all the variants in OS formats, how do you adjust the deck to fit the requirements of these formats? For example the Xpoints format. Or do you play a different strategy in these kind of tournaments?

  • @NatePrawdzik
    @NatePrawdzik Před 5 měsíci

    The Juzaam example is such a eye-opener because back in the day, 4 factories in play meant you could trade one of them for a Juzaam, but now 2 of them does the same, and 4 of them means you trade 0 to kill a Juzaam. It's a crazy buff in power and the fact you recognized this and incorporated it into the most powerful control deck is fantastic, since that's what 90's Brian would have done too.

    Great video, Brian! Really enjoyed it. Also, I think it's somewhat silly in Swedish Old-School that Strip Mine is restricted but Mishra's Factory is not. Not a big deal for most maybe but a big deal for us poor souls unfortunate enough to be in Sweden.

    Hi Brian, I do love your old school content! I would be interested how you would rebuild your MD and SB in a Swedish old school environment. Don't you think basic plains in the MD is there a must (I see a lot of Fantasy Zoo lists or URb counterburn decks).

    About the Mishra’s Factory topic, the French Old school rules is interesting (French Boar Rules) : the original Alpha “tapped blocker”rule is applied. Basically, a blocking Mishra’s Factory becomes a 0/3 when activating his +1/+1 ability.
    It brings back the original power of the card to more reasonable level while conserving the aggressive component of it (you can have a play set in your deck).
    What is your opinion Brian ?
    Thank you !

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman  Před 5 měsíci +3

      I think this is a reasonable solution, that does preserve most of the power of the card. It certainly still works just as well for finishing a game.
      I think that by any criteria, even nerfed, Mishra's Factory should simply be restricted. This would force the format's control decks to actually include finishers, and make the card a lot less oppressive against restricted Strip Mine. Imo, preserve the card's functionality without bending modern rules, but also restrict it.

      Cool to see you answer my questions!
      Big fan of your videos and all the knowledge that you bring.
      (Hope my English is understandable)
      Some questions/comments come to mind if we restrict Mishra’s Factory to a singleton copy:
      1) How detrimental will it be for Aggro decks (already not so powerful vs. control)?
      I mean, “Mishra’s Factory” is a great recovery tool to fight Abyss / Wrath of God / Earthquake etc. and push the last damage points.
      2) I agree: IF 4 “Mishra’s Factory” THEN 4 “Strip Mines”
      3) I feel the flavor of the Mishra’s Factory in its initial design, implies that it is meant to be played as a playset (4 seasons / pump each other)
      How important do you think flavor is when setting-up rules & ban-restriction list?
      4) Seems like you are not a big fan of “bending the modern rules” to enforce old rules
      If we consider 4 strip mines, then we are talking about EC rules (which I prefer)
      In EC Rules, mana burn exists and can be considered as a “bending of the modern rules” to bring back old rules (to reflect the spirit of the game from 93/94 and bring a bit more balance to some cards eg. Su-Chi)
      Hence the question, why consider restricting to a singleton instead of bringing back old rules when it comes to nerf ?
      You might not want to answer due to lack of time.
      If so, you might consider it as a future topic for your podcast ? (lands in general are a big topic in old school)
      Thank again !🎉
