  • Game 1 of the finals is in the books, it's time for sideboarding! In this video, Sam Tang and I discuss the sideboard decisions for both decks, before moving back to the action in game 2. I'm currently leading the match, but this is a swingy format where anything can happen. My opponent Jonathan Salem hasn't lost a match all tournament, but will he be able to keep that streak going with his back up against a wall?
    We begin the action after both of us have kept our opening seven, and Jonathan has elected to play first again. So sit back and enjoy the second game of this historic Old School event. Thank as always for watching!

    And just like that, your series finishes on a great note. Thanks to you and Sam for producing this series on the 2019 OSWC. I know it would be a stretch to ask, but I hope you might do some future commentary on other OS matches that you consider epic and worthy of in-depth appreciation.
    Cheers!

      You are so welcome, really glad you enjoyed it. I have kind of moved on from Old School these days, as too many other things are consuming my time and interest. However, I hope to be invited to commentate a match from time to time, and I'll be sure to post it on my channel. Thanks so much for watching and for your great feedback.

      You're so welcome. I hope to have more content like this down the road. Disc golf has consumed much of my time lately, but I'll be back to more Magic invariably.

    Thank You! This was great! I have shared this in hopes that others can learn from the great commentary with insights into the original game, its rules and intricacies. Thank You Brian! I hope to see more from you soon! I do like that Four Horsemen Format, the problem is I don’t have a lot of that product! I remember in ‘94 I bought two packs of Legends, a box of Fallen Empires some Dark, and only just found out from You Tube videos that a lot of stores really only sold 2 packs of Legends per customer and later when I wanted more it was already gone. And of course being in college I really did not peruse it. Anyway, thank you for the insight

      You are so so welcome Justin, thank you for taking the time to write those kind words. Four Horsemen is quite fun and accessible, it makes a really good introductory format for a foray into Old School Magic. Take care!

    Hey Brian, it's Rob, Great series of videos! I finally got a practical explanation on how to read an opponent. Hope to see more OS content from you/Sam, especially a Q&A session. You made the point that as a rule of thumb, you play on your turn to defend against the worst case scenario from your opponent. That makes sense with a control deck that is defensive & wins the long game. My question is if you were playing a more aggressive archetype (ex mono black), should that mindset change to the opposite, where you go for the kill anytime you can since you want to avoid the long game?

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hey there, thank you for the generous comments and for letting me know what you enjoyed specifically. Opponent reading in Magic is a bit of a lost art, I think, as the game has turned mostly into math and curving. In the end, we are still playing against human beings, and human beings aren't random number generators.
      I think you generally want to play to the strength of your deck, though that can change contextually. If you're playing mono black aggro, your strength is the early game, where you can leverage disruption and snowball a win before a more powerful deck with blue can recover. However, that might shift against a mono red strategy. Against a deck like that, Drain Life is a lot stronger than Hypnotic Specter. You might need Nevinyrral's Disk instead of Juzam Djinn to deal with Ankhs and Black Vises. So you have to be malleable, and figure out what strategy and what sideboard best combats a certain opponent. Then you need to figure out what you can afford to remove from your main deck without compromising what it does too much.

      @@Thebrianweissman Thanks Brian. On another note, let's say this went to a game 3. Do you continue to keep the specters in now that the cat is out of the bag?

    Has anyone in the community every played with Word of Command.....can it be good. Can it work inThe Deck build maybe as a sideboard piece. It's a card that no-one will ever see coming. How cool would it be to have the Power Artifact/ Basalt Monolith combo deck player fireball himself during his upkeep before he gets a chance to get the combo going.

    Brian I don't see Sierra Angels in his SB. Unless his Sierra Angels are the misprint time elemental art? p.s. it will always be Type 1 no matter what the cool kids call it

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman  Před 3 měsíci

      Hey Mackenzie, so great to see you here! The Time Elementals are indeed a misprint. I actually got confused by them earlier in the commentary, and then made a correction later. I don't remember what edition those are, but it's a known misprint. I agree with you about it being Type 1, we were the original pioneers. Say hi to your dad and family for me!

    Whats the format?

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman  Před 3 měsíci

      It’s called “Old School”, sometimes 93/94. There are small differences in the various communities, but most of them only allow cards from Alpha to Fallen Empires.
      It has its own restricted list too. Similar to Vintage, but with some additional inclusions to reflect the power level of the format. Mana Drain, for example, is restricted in all Old School formats.
      It’s a cool format, outside of the cost of the staples. Definitely the purest form of competitive Magic around.
