2019 MTG Old School World Championships Quarterfinals. The Deck vs. Power Monolith Game 1

  • **Note** I mistakenly explain that Peter is playing "Workshops" at the start of this video, which was actually just my assumption when he flashed me a Workshop during shuffling. However, he was actually playing Power Monolith with just a smattering of artifact creatures. Apologies for the confusion.
    Here it is at last, the moment we've all been waiting for. Sam Tang and I bring you the action, narrating my first game from the 2019 Old School World Championship quarterfinals. This game was recorded by Daniel Chang, who does a solid job of moving back and forth to film our hands. This is a classic example of control vs. combo, back in the era when "combo" meant casting Power Artifact on a Basalt Monolith. Truthfully, the combo my opponent Peter is playing wasn't even a thing in 1994. Back then, Basalt Monolith had errata that prevented itself from being untapped using mana created by a Basalt Monolith.
    This game showcases the various tools in The Deck, and discusses what strategy you can employ to take on this potent and dangerous enemy. Sam and I hope you guys enjoy the commentary, thoughts and feedback are more than welcome!

    This is a masterclass in how to play old school. Thanks Brian!

    Leading Library also bricked his Fellwar for a little while.
    Edit: I see you mentioned that in his next turn.
    Another interesting thing about factory, pass T2 is that let's say Peter goes for the combo, you float WWW and disenchant in response, he somehow stops that, there's a small chance you can Jedi mind trick him into agreeing to fireball you for 20, which would let you use factory to activate itself and plow it with the W floating.

      Replying as I get further in. Peter needs to bait with the mirror.
      Edit: Reviewing this, I also note that the mirror lost value as a threat, and threats that do that need to be deployed when they are relevant.

      Agree with using Factory and saving Strip (in the midgame), especially because one of the ways he can get back in the game would be to get his own Library going.
      (Edited with clarifying comment in parenthesis.)

    Very nice! This deck reminds me of a deck I once had back in the day. At our local game store we played a lot of block constructed, that means you can build any deck from a single block with some bann and restricted rules. Was pretty wild because you could see a deck from the tempest block vs a deck from the invasion block. I played the revised block with mana drains, the tome’s, Aladdin’s ring, the abyss balance and lots of card from the deck.
    It was one of my favourite decks because I really liked the old stuff.

      @@Rorschachqp Arabian night, legends and antiquities were added to the revised set to make a block. Alpa, beta and unlimited were banned.

      @@panzerfaust187 That's not correct. First, Revised reprinted just a few cards from Antiquities and Arabian Nights...No cards from Legends. Second, back then there were no blocks or rotations in 1995. The first unofficial block was Ice Age which also had Alliances but the third set of the block, Cold Snap, was printed many years after.
      A block is an official term by Wizards Of The Coast that starts with a year long release of sets that are similarly themed and usually tell the beginning, middle and end of a story. The first set is always a huge set of like 300 cards with two smaller sets of about 100-150-ish cards. The first official block came out advertised as such, was Mirage block, which had Visions and Weatherlight as the follow up sets.

    The hand organizing thing is very real. When Hymn To Tourach was first printed, I often waited “as a courtesy” to let the opponent sort their hand before I picked their cards to discard…always both on one side or the other.
    The culture of random discard was very primitive back then since only Mind Twist and Hypno had the effect.
    Things got really bad if the guy wore glasses and held their cards closer to their face. Multiple times I had to remind a player to lower their hand so I couldn’t see the reflection of their cards off their glasses.

    These are amazing Brian, thank you.
    Question about your deck’s sleeves, which is irrelevant but I’m still curious by nature; why do they seem thinner than other sleeves? They seem to make your cards appear thinner too. It’s interesting to me, but not as interesting as the game itself, obviously. ❤

    At around 34:00 your decision not to Mana Drain the Mirror Universe makes perfect sense given the board state (winning more each turn), you hand and Peter's potential range of plays. My question is, in what range of situations would you have played the Mana Drain for the potential next turn finish with lethal Fireball? Would it be only where you were on a losing clock yourself or would there be certain stalemate situations where you feel it would also be appropriate?
    Thanks in advance!

      Right on! It takes a bit of getting used to, but should become second nature with practice. It's likely your brain can handle the desultory nature better than your opponent's. It also looks cool 😀

    Library was busted even more old school when people went first actually drew their first card.

    One thing I do not understand : if you are so worried about losing a flip, why not use the chaos orb in a situation where you still hold a second answer back ? Like at one point you used a disenchant and then regrowthed it back. You could have used the orb there, kept the disenchant and use the regrowth later. Heck you even could have used it on the orb latewr when you get into a situation where orb is the only answer.

    • @NatePrawdzik
      @NatePrawdzik Před 4 měsíci

      Low risk doesn't mean no worry, it just means you may have other priorities. In this case, there's a medium reward of potentially generating a two-for-one: basalt and power artifact together. It was a little greedy but relatively safe due to his skill at orb flipping. (Also, an unused orb may find a better target later.)
      I would have taken your line, for the record, as I don't have the confidence in my dexterity with the card that Brian has in his.
      Orb requiring 1 colorless to activate is easier to retain at the ready then disenchants at 1W. It's a small difference, but not nothing.

    • @daftwulli6145
      @daftwulli6145 Před 4 měsíci

      @@NatePrawdzik The thing is if he uses the orb there he still has the regrowth, so he can get back orb at any time, unless he really misses.

    Basically players need to remember to play the Poker part of Magic.

  • @nickfanzo
    @nickfanzo Před 4 měsíci +1

    Regarding library of Alexandria, it’s clearly the most busted card in all of old school.
    I really don’t understand formats with one strip because it leaves too many chances for library to be left unchecked and warp games.
    Their justification is that strip warps games on its own, but leaving library unchecked is way more warping of a game state than using multiple strip mine. It also leaves Mithras factory unchecked for a lot of games and that card on its own can totally dominate games turn after turn, especially when it pumps.

      Only a single change actually. I’ve replaced the second COP: Red in the sideboard with a third Divine Offering. The rest of the deck is unchanged, and probably can’t be improved in current EC rules.
