  • So sorry about the accidental cliffhanger with my last two posts! For some reason, the last file was corrupted, and cut out around the :58 minute mark. This is a second repost of the whole video, including the incredible finale! Thanks for all your patience and support.
    Alright guys, time to get serious! After dispatching Peter in the quarterfinals, I had a rough road ahead of me. In my way stood none other than Eric Froehlich, the MTG Hall of Famer and decorated poker player. Eric was wielding not only his prodigious skills, but also the design that's the closest thing EC rules has to a favorable matchup against The Deck: Grixis Atog.
    I knew I was in for a battle, and boy, did this match not disappoint. What transpired was a pure masterclass in how to play an Old School control deck, against one of the strongest players to ever pick up a set of Moxes and a Lotus. I'm incredibly proud of how well I played this game, and I'm so grateful my friend Sam Tang could join me to commentate it for all of you.

    You are a very great player. Good to see your thoughts as this game progressed. I played your deck (it was still blue white) back at Origins 96 when you were dueling for packs at your booth. I won three packs with my 4 color type 1 deck that featured Naf Asps and mox monkey plus dwarven minor. I enjoyed that moment and you are a class person. This was an example of how well you play and the levels of though that go into these matches. Good to see your still playing magic at such levels.

      So kind of you to share this memory David, thanks so much for taking the time to write it up. Sounds like you wrecked me with your design, which honestly sounds like a total nightmare for 1996 The Deck. Back then, I ran Moat instead of Abyss, so the Miner/Monkey package would have been almost impossible to beat. I didn't switch to an Abyss strategy until the printed Morphling in late 1998. I'm glad you won those packs, and I'm sure it was great playing you.
      Stay tuned for the next set of games from this event. We already recorded the commentary, it'll be posted once the editing is done. Be well!

    Hey Brian. The sequence starting at 50:30 - 53:00. In commentary you believed to be at 7 and tap City to drop to 6. I completely understand sometimes taking the risk and putting your opponent on the exact cards to kill you but at 7 life (dropping to 6) and tapping out (52:10) a player of your caliber tapping out and "crossing your fingers" (52:55) seemed a bit maverick. In game, you were actually at 9 life and tapping the city dropping to 8, so even if your opponent had the Psi Blast and bolt (as you mentioned at 52:20) it would put you to 1 which made the tapping out play more understandable. Do you think the 2 additional life points in game was more so the reason behind for tapping out? Again, I understand we must take risks sometimes so I'm just curious. For reference, you realize you're at 8 life 55:10

    I had a quick question about certain cards to maybe add or not into an Omnath Locus of Mana deck
    1.) The One Ring
    2.) Archdruid's Charm
    3.) Modern Horizion 3 Spoiler: Flare of Cultivation
    4.) Throne of Eldrine, I was going to switch it out with Vorinclex, but I replaced that with Nissa, Ascended Animist

    This was great. Was thinking a little bit about that Recall play; I've been playing a deck today with 3 Recalls, old-school Italian, and it gave me a hunch that you wanted to go for the small Recall at that stage in the game (which would have worked out better). Just like you, I've been too tempted to wait/tap-out for the larger recalls and it's cost me several times. I certainly feel like the first Recall, more often than not, you want to be a small Recall and then later on if you can cast another you can maybe go a bit bigger. But yeah, that was quality. Incredibly well sustained, tight play.

    Brian, did you guys film and of the earlier matches?

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman  Před 3 měsíci

      Daniel did the filming, but he was playing in the event and was in contention the whole time. He didn't make top 8 though, so he was able to record there.
      I faced, in order:
      Round 1: Mono Black 2-1(he killed me with turn 1 Juzam, followed by three consecutive LD on turns 2-4 :O)
      Round 2: Mono Black 2-0
      Round 3: Jeskai aggro with Armageddon 2-0
      Round 4: Mono Red with artifacts and some goblins 2-0
      Round 5: 3-color Shops with Copy Aritifact 2-1(again, a turn 1 creature killed me in game 1, this time a Su-Chi). The match was also notable because we ran out of time and had to do a Chaos Orb flip off. I finally won that after about 15 minutes.
      Round 6: Esper aggro, with Specters and Juzam and Serendib and Hymn and Sinkhole. 2-0
      And then 6-0 in games in the finals. A total record of 18-2 in games, with both losses turn 1 kill flukes. Pretty emphatic, I'd say 😃

  • @Rorschachqp

    Interesting crossroads at 47:33 when Eric DT’s for Wheel and you have full mana open (6 painfree mana and CoB) and book available. It’s possible to tap four for book, maybe draw a UU spell counter for the wheel. And if you fail you still can Disenchant the Vise on the way out to drawing 7.

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I rewatched this section of the game, and I agree this was an option. However, I've already cast one Counterspell, which means I've only got four left in the deck. If I commit four mana to drawing with the Tome before his Wheel resolves, and I don't hit that four-outer, I'm all but helpless against whatever cards he gets from his new seven. At this stage in the game I'm inches from death, and I need ALL my mana available to fight the rest of his turn. I think this suggestion is simply too risky, even if it has a narrow chance of effectively winning the game. Thanks for the time you spent to inquire.

      1:13:05 He can eventually play multiple creatures and still kill with The Abyss in play, but he will never win with Book running. He should have killed it in his previous turn, however, and denied you the extra card.

      I've got the closest thing to that for you. After I was essentially forced to return the event trophy following the ridiculous manufactured outrage over the deck photo, they decided to run the top 8 again. I asked to be in it, since I had gone 6-0 in the Swiss, but was refused. So here is a link to the people and decks in the second run of the top 8.

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman  Před 4 měsíci

      Paying RR when Eric cast Chain Lightning on me there would have done three things.
      One, it would have dealt three rather inconsequential damage to him, since my plan was to kill him with the Fireball in my hand already. Yes, to safely cast Fireball for 10 I need more mana out, but that’s inevitable in a few turns anyway.
      Two, it would have used up one source of blue mana, when the game is hanging by a knife’s edge and I may need all three counterspells in a turn.
      Three, and by far the most important, if I pay RR to send the Chain Lightning back his way, he can then pay another RR himself to hit me for another three, when I’m currently sitting at four life!
      Perhaps you and Eric are both unaware of how Chain Lightning works? Not your fault of course, since you almost never see it bounce around a bunch. It’s certainly been a while for me, almost never play the card myself!
      Thanks for the inquiry though, and for checking out my videos!

    • @ericpetracca
      @ericpetracca Před 4 měsíci +1

      Great analysis, as always. While I do know how Chain Lightning works, it was an interesting moment in the match, interesting enough that a few of us wanted to know more of your thought process. Thank you for taking the time to provide additional commentary, @Thebrianweissman.

    such an expensive format to play, every time you shuffle your cards you do about $15 worth of damage to them, Imagine playing a game with a Gordie Howe rookie card and smacking them around!

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman  Před 4 měsíci +4

      The idea of damage is irrelevant, because these are heirlooms, and I’ll never sell them.
