Laguna PX12 Benchtop Thickness Planer Review: How can it be worse than a Ryobi?

  • I recently upgraded my old Ryobi AP1301 planer to the brand new Laguna PX|12 benchtop planer. It features a segmented cutterhead with carbide inserts which should improve performance over the Ryobi’s HSS knives. I give an overview of the planer out of the box and then I conducted multiple tests between the two planers, where I measured their performance regarding the planed surface, noise, snipe, and thickness consistency.
    Do you think it's worth the extra cost?

    Thank you for the information. As a woodworker for over 50 years and working with thickness planers from 12 inch to 24 inch and from 3 hp to 7 1/2 hp, they all produce snipe of some sort. they also leave what I call ripples from the cutterhead. This can also be seen with jointers. Being a Fine woodworker and making quality furniture, we were all taught how to use hand planes. As long as the boards that I am planing are not longer than 60 inches, I use hand planes to smooth the surface, which removes all imperfections from the wood surface. This is something that the average woodworker should learn how to do. I suggest those interested to watch some of Rob Cosman‘s videos which goes into this subject in detail. In conclusion, use scraps of wood ahead and behind the wood that you are planning and your snipe is virtually eliminated. Machines only reduce the amount of labor, but cannot replace the skillful hands of a fine woodworker.

    There are different grades of carbide... Because carbide is so hard, it's also very brittle so nicks and chips are common in the cheaper grades.......I love the fact that you talk fast and move right along so I don't get bored. Well done!

    When your Ryobi planer ( or any planer) leaves a ridge due to a nic in blade. Simply run board thru planer again WITHOUT changing depth of cuts. Just move board a bit left or right to let planer cut off the ridge only.

    Thank you for this video! Really impressed with the Ryobi! Would you still recommend the Ryobi, or some other "budget" planer? Or should one save up for a unit with helical cutters?

    Some parts of the construction look very similar to my dewalt 734. Anyways, like my grandpa always said. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
    He been right more times than I can count.
    Long live Ryobi!

    Great comparison vid. I really want the PX12, and was about to purchase, then started hearing about this issue. I called Laguna today to find out what's going on. I was really impressed by how they handled the call. Mad respect for this company. I was told the issues you're seeing has so far been limited to the production of units for the Black Friday sales period as there have been no reports of this issue on production runs previous to and after. They also informed me they are now testing every PX12 before sending em out. Nevertheless, Im looking for a backup model in case they dont sort this problem out. Curious why picked the PX12 and what were the other models you seriously considered?

      Thanks for that information! I didn't know it only affected a production batch. I picked the PX12 because I wanted to try out a carbide planer without paying out the ears for it. The Black Friday sale definitely sold me knowing that Laguna is a reputable company. The Dewalt DW735 was definitely in the running since the price was comparable, but it still had HSS knives and it's a lot heavier.

    Did we ever get an update ?

    As of mid April 2022 Laguna hasn't solved the cutterhead issue and is not shipping any units. Laguna CS coordinated the return of my planer to Woodcraft, who provide a full refund and $100 off an Oliver Shelical planer.

    Did Laguna replace it? Any updates on its performance?

      Laguna still hasn’t fixed the problem and doesn’t have plans to replace it as of calling them today. I asked about making sure I get a replacement in the future for the same price I paid but they said it’s up to the dealer (Woodcraft in my case)

    It's been 2 months now do you have any update on a new (working) unit?

    • @jaysanwich
      @jaysanwich  Před 2 lety +1

      No update unfortunately. I called them today for an update and they’re still in the process of getting all the units back from owners. They still haven’t fixed the issues with the cutterhead. I expected the problem to be resolved by now but I guess not. There’s also no guarantee I’ll be able to get a fixed version in the future for the same sale price since it will be up to the dealer I purchased it from. That assumes they ever fix it…

    you are not really comparing like for like, apples to apples when you are comparing the $35 shelix cutter heads to the laguna.... the shelix come in a box of 10 yet there are 56 cutters so to replace all of them.... yep $210

  • @xisotopex
    @xisotopex Před rokem

    if there was a helical cuttere replacement for your ryobi you would have been better off with that than a whole new planer...

    I haven't heard anything good about that Laguna planer, especially considering the bloated price on it.

      Yea it's really a shame. I really expected something more considering the brand. Their bandsaws are exceptional but this planer is such a disappointment.

    Not sure if you talk like that or the video is playing fast. Your speech is too fast to understand. I thought it was me. So I had another watch video. They said “without my asking “. They could not understand the fast speech.

      Clearly Laguna tools is monitoring CZcams for these posts. I spoke with Rachel in Customer support and was told that the product is NOT being recalled but that owners Needed to return the planer to the dealer for a refund. (sounds like a recall to me) My planer makes horrendous raised ribs at every blade but they are different heights and thickness so the carbide inserts must be positioned all willy nilly in the roller. If it's true that ONLY the black Friday units have this problem than I think Laguna owes us a replacement unit that works properly rather than forcing us to purchase a new one at a higher price. It seems only fair to provide us with a fully working unit even though we purchased it at a discount. A simple voucher issued to customers to use at any dealer when the new and properly working units are available.
