I think it’s time for that 1 year follow up :)

The PX12 is technically not a helical cutter. It's a segment cutter. Helical cutters are oriented in a helix around the axis of the cutterhead, and strike the work piece at a slight angle to produce a shearing cut.

Not technically or literally (or even metaphorically). Just not a helical head.

Same issues as others, just got my unit, leaves nothing but grooves in the wood, I even cleaned and reset all the inserts, ran board straight and angle, still grooves. all boards were true one side and I leveled the infeed and out feed tables. ran it on aspen, oak, hard maple. Buyers beware, I will be contacting Laguna and Rockler tomorrow. I will update once I hear back from them. Wish I would have went with the Dewalt 735x

I have the same issue with mine! Just got it a few days ago and am very disappointed with the cut quality. I opened a ticket with Laguna and they said they have a "bad batch" that leave stripes on the surface. I swapped it for another unit and am getting the same result. Not happy!

FYI. It's cutter is made from carbide inserts. However, it's not a helical design.

Thanks for the review. Looks like a solid planer, and the carbide knives are always a significant upgrade over HSS knives. Smart purchase.

Thanks, Rockler and Woodcraft just dropped this to $540 I may go with this over DeWalt for the price and the carbide cutters.

Can the dust port be flipped to either side?

Wish I could remember that the title on this video is false advertising... it's not helical, and the poster clearly doesn't understand correct use of the word.

This planer is not a helical head. The blades are straight and segmented, not helical.

Four scant passes on a 2x4 isn't much to base a judgement on.

How does the build quality seem? Will it hold up over time?

Laguna controls are always heavy duty. The rest looks very similar to a Dewalt 734. I'll do a 6-8 month follow up and let you know how it's doing. Good question, Thank You.

How's the planner holding up? In the market and considering the Laguna.

It's doing very well, happy with it and no problems.

  • @idealplumbingservice7943

I just bought this unit, and found it cutting deeper on the right side, and also leaving scallops or groves from the cutter blades. Have you experienced this yet?

    • @mrbodawg
      @mrbodawg  Před 2 lety

No, mine cuts fine, very smooth. Give Laguna support a call.

Hello, just purchased the laguna px12 and notice mine is cutting grooves as well. Have you had any luck with troubleshooting

I had the same problem. Laguna sent me a new planer which had the same issues. They gave me the option of full refund or get another replacement unit. After two machines that didn’t work I think I’ll opt for the refund. Most likely buying a DeWalt with conventional planer blades.
