hi. thanks for doing just what I needed to see. As an older lady living alone I lose the motivation to make any kind of meal. I live on toast, soup and a bit of fruit.
Today I remembered my mum used to buy tinned stewing steak, but when I read the reviews for morrisons, sainsburys and princes they made me retch! The reviews mentioned huge lumps of gristle, fat and VEINS !! That was my plan for a proper little meal of meat and veg gone west.
Then I went to utube and found you....I am really grateful for your method of testing. I think you said Tesco and Asda the best, so when I can get hold of some I will definitely try it. Thanks again. 😊

Years ago the government decided to give away tins of cooked beef from the beef mountain from the EU. There was also butter and cheese from what I can remember. We did get a couple of these cans of beef and I think it was ok, we ate it anyway. We could do with mountains of stuff today with what is happening in the world. It’s strange isn’t what happens sometimes.

Hi Gareth. Thanks for another brill review. What a great idea. Every one of those stews had their pros and cons but all looked good. It's really good that you are showing people how to cook easy meals from scratch on a low budget. Keep up the spot on work. Best wishes from Scotland.

Thank you for reviewing the tins of stewed steak a couple of years ago.
I’ve been trying the different supermarket tins of steak and some are a bit cheaper but don’t have a lot of steak pieces.
I’ve noticed that the cheaper tins obviously have more fat and less steak, so you should pay that little bit extra for better quality.
It’s about £2.50 for supermarket own brand near me.

Thanks for the review, Gareth. I've just eaten a chicken and pulled pork pie that I bought from my local Heron Foods, it is one of their "Now or Never" range. Their are two frozen pies in the pack weighing 650g, so each pie weighs 325g and there is plenty of meat in them. Another variety in the range is chicken and mushroom, they are well worth trying before they sell out and become unavailable in the future.

Not sure about mixing 2 different tins of steak.a bit long drawn out but think separate pies was the way to go..I did the lide one was OK but very runny.did pastry on the bottom as well using lidle puff pastry.but should have cooked base first before adding steak as the base was not cooked enough.your doing a great job and love your reviews. Got the Iceland curry mix .almost spot on. But got the ratios wrong .was like glue.think one tub will do 4 curry sauce mixes. Keep up the good work 👏

I've eaten Asda Just Essentials tinned Stewed Steak several times, both as a pie filling and served with potatoes and veg. I find it more than acceptable. It tastes great to me......the gravy especially seems very tasty, and the steak is really tender. I wasn't shocked when the Asda one pipped the rest..... The inevitable question is - if we all start buying Asda Just Essentials stuff, will the price go up, or would the alternatives come down?

Because they took so long to cook they dried out a bit but we're still nice. I melted some extra mature cheddar on top and they were lovely. Be interested to see you cook them and what you think.

Interesting one this one Gareth, Even with 3 tins of smart price the filling is costing £5.25 + the pastry, say £6 in total,…or you could buy a ready made family steak and gravy pie from all the supermarkets at various pricing and hit and miss filling quantities,….I guess by making it yourself, you know with a family of 4,you will all get a decent portion to get down your grid 😂,great review as always, take care and ATB 👍

yes well it started off as a comparison with steak then i thought id make a pie and use up some old pastry in the fridge I had. it made 4 good portions so went down well.

I use one tin of steak and it's easily enough to make a large pie - especially if bulked out with mushrooms, potatoes, carrots etc. He basically made a pot pie here, which means he could fit a vast amount of meat in, which would be way more meat than you'd get in a ready made family pie.
You can make a large encased pie with one tin like this, which would feed 3-4.
