Imagine the suffering these poor birds go through including the slaughter for people in the UK to pay less than £2.00 per carcass and those in the production to still make a profit.
I totally agree that it is great value is you are on a tight budget. I have severe misgivings regarding its welfare and the methods used to dispatch this chicken. If you buy a UK Chicken with the Red Tractor on the packaging it would give you a bit more peace of mind. Even that has its problems, because farms can be inspected without prior notice any sick birds are killed right away on the farm. Morrisons have small chicken for about the same price, all UK farmed and dispatched by Morrisons, all accountable.

It's cheap for a reason, but as long as it does you no harm get on with it, if a restraunt used it with all the gubbins and served it up, you would be non the wiser
It's cheap because Ukraine has low wages, vast amounts of grain they can't export so they are feeding livestock, increasing the size of herds/flocks to try reduce as much grain waste as possible. That is why this chicken is so cheap, it's being produced for about 40% less than it would in the UK but to food standards the same as our own because otherwise they'd not be able to import into the EU.
Hi Gareth, good video in parts. It was a bargain price and would be good for a family on a tight budget. I would have cooked it a bit longer but that's just me. I also like the skin when it's crispy. Now for the bad part of the video. Apparently the chickens prior to 1950s were significantly smaller than conventional chickens today given hormones and whatnot to make them grow bigger, faster

The small Lidl chickens that used to be £1.99 are now £3.25 in Lidl but I still have a few whole chickens that cost me 90p on the 2/1/23 when Lidl reduced the price of meat that had a use by date of 2/1/23
sounds horrible mate
@@liam5382 If it's frozen and your freezer goes to -18C then the food will last indefinitely. There are woolly mammoths in Siberia over 40,000 years old and they still have edible flesh at least to the likes of Steve1989MREInfo 🤣
I used to always buy a large ( better value, i thought) and cut it in half freeze 50% for another day.. fitted nicer in the slow cooker..
@@liam5382 😅
If it was any smaller it would be an egg 🤣. That aside as you say its a meal for 4 with extras, the afore mentioned soup/broth etc so value wise its good going. The fact that it cooks in the air fryer makes it even more economic. I think you may have found a little star there.
Sunday dinners in the late 70's and 80's were always made with a frozen chicken in my house. My Mum used to buy it on the Saturday and it would be defrosted by Sunday and then lashed in the oven. Not had one for years! On a different note Gareth. You have been getting lots of glowing mentions on HUKD 👍
My "second mum" was my bezzie mates mum in the 90's. After a whole weekend of headbanging we could wake up to a lovely roast chicken dinner with all the trimmings on a Sunday. Watch the footy on TV, it was pure serenity.
Not Halal though
As others already mentioned, no need to wash chicken, all you're doing is transferring any bacteria from the bird to everything that got splashed when you washed it! As for the bird itself, well I guess if you're on an incredibly tight budget then needs must. Not something I would buy personally though.
Hey Greeno, we haven't had a video for a while mate..!
@@SkintVegan yeah I know pal, unfortunately had a very close family bereavement recently so had a lot of stuff to sort out, not leaving any time for making videos. Hoping to find time to film something over the weekend though, so there should be a video ready for Monday evening 🙂

The first ever dish I cooked when I bought my ninja was a whole chicken…..pricked and rubbed with Indian spices it was amazing, juicy and tender it was a revelation!!!😛
never wash raw chicken
Great video on the chicken, especially showing great value in these hard times, I totally agree with the way prices are going daft, thanks for great videos, all the best from us in Ellesmere port
I've bought a worktop oven with Rostisarie attachment.
Looking forward to try it
Thank you Gaz, I've not had roast chicken dinner for yonks, so I've put it on my shopping list 👍 mind you that poor wee sod 🐔 looks as if it gave it's self up😂 Mind the tooth 🦷🧚 tonight Gaz ❤
Generally when I buy those chickens I thaw them and then make curry with them. You can feed about 12 people with a 2.5lb chicken in a curry with rice, naan or chapattis with veggies and assorted condiments. I always cook the chickens on the bone in the curry... and add onions and tomatoes etc.
Spot on.
😂spot on. That made me laugh
I make a curry with the leftovers from when I strip the carcase
12 people?! Your cooking skills far exceed mine.😯
i have bought a few of these gareth, they are ideal for myself and my husband,as i dont like left over meat, except for asandwich in the evening but as you say itsgreat for a small family who has limited funds ,so these vids that you do gives them a heads up
Imagine the suffering these poor birds go through including the slaughter for people in the UK to pay less than £2.00 per carcass and those in the production to still make a profit.
There’s no such thing as humane slaughter. Btw I’m a meat eater and not Muslim. But let’s not pretend we actually care about the chicken we’re eating if we did we wouldn’t kill it.
@@BlowinFree give over it’s a chicken nobody cares that’s the truth.
@@BlowinFree you keep on believing you’re doing the organic chicken a favour by eating it. The only reason I pay more for them is because they taste nicer. Stunning it before cutting its throat and saying that’s humane is like knocking somebody out before you shoot them. Same result.
@@BlowinFree i sense a little bit of anger in your reply there. Does it hurt denying the truth so much. There’s no nice way to die, and it pains you to accept that the animal has to die for you to eat it. I suspect you’re the type that wouldn’t actually be able to kill anything you eat. Out of sight out of mind?
That was a good little buy again for people struggling it could be a good dinner with a few roast potato’s veg and mash, serve small to serve all thanks for that Gareth , don’t forget the tooth fairy tonight for your we girl lol. ❤
That chicken has never seen daylight 😂
I have looked into this and you are correct.
How weird is that? I just commented in one of your other sections about the old Farmfood deals on chickens, three for a tenner...😂 Yip, you can get a good few meals and a pile of sarnies from a chicken... As I'd said, not tip top, but it does a turn... wee breast and leg dinner, sarnies from the scrap and soup from the bones and juice... I'm going to stop commenting... As I'm writing this you're doing what I'm writing here...😂😂... Great video bruv, totally agree... 👍🏴
All hail The Air Fryer! I've not used an oven for nearly two years now. £30 Asda's own brand fryer ... So handy! 😅🙏
Same. I hardly ever use the stove any more.
A Covid gimmick
I'm split on this. With it being so cheap, you do wonder about the whole processing side of it. But on the other hand, anyone on a tight budget, this is perfect in providing a decent meal. Great review Gareth 👍
It's Halal, why would any European eat Halal? Have we been conquered? or is this just preparation? 🤪
Love the white plates you use, for putting the food on, the ones with the lip around the edge, where did u get them from
top tip !! put the chicken breast side down for half the cooking time the turn ...it stops the meat drying out !
Thanks for bringing that review Gaz, what a bargain, I know it's only small but it's sufficient for 2 people and it looks very tasty.
Lol, I thought you'd got smellovision as I could have sworn I could smell it cooking..... then I heard crunching and looked at my missus, she was eating a bag of Walkers Roast Chicken crisps!
Hope they was Halal crisps... and did she wash her hands after eating them 😂✌️
Great vslue, looks better than any other chicken ive seen for ages. 🥪❣️
Hi Gareth, love your channel and appreciate all your videos. Please tell me what air fryer/mini oven you have. Seems perfect. Thanks again.
Very good value £1.99 😮 our farmer breeds them cheaper you get a extra drumstick ,but you can't catch them 3 legged 😂🙌
Thanks for another honest review 💜💜💜
Thanks for that Gareth! Hope they've got some left in Farmfoods. Will get 6 or half dozen and put in freezer! Just right for me and the wife!!
Uhm, 6 IS half a dozen (a dozen is 12). Bless ya,...
Used to be 1.8kg and £2.99. There is not much flavour tbh so bought them as an ingredient. Roast it up, let it cool and shred the meat before freezing in portions for use in noodles, fried rice or pilau rice etc.
Thats similar to what I do with it. That way meal prep is easier as well.
I have no wish to be controversial, so I will just say - no, thank you.
this is a thumbs up from me as a pensioner some good healthy meals to be had at an affordable price, wish I had an air fryer pension dose not run to new kitchen appliances
With the bouquet garnish and veg . It the best lovely gravy and I like half a glass of red wine. When I simmer this down it turns into the best gravy 😊

That tooth was in the beef paste the other day ....lol
Great review Gaz and it just goes to show you the state off our farmers after the government has finished with them giving them more money not to grow crops than to grow them it’s a sad world we are living in keep up with the great work as always and it looked pretty good 👏👏👍👍
Fantastic point well made, so there fore why promote the regular purchase of obviously inappropriate and ill farmed practices of incredibly cheap and budget priced meats.. as clearly like you mentioned its more than the Animal that pays the ultimate price.
@@theboywithathorninhisside.4179 Exactly, cheap rubbish. People spent more on a bar of chocolate.
Problem for me is where was the chicken imported from could be so many countries that do not have the same restrictions on the poultry reared in their country and how clean are the factories ?
Had 1 of these before Gareth and was all hollow inside but worth money for soups and chicken mayo ect well done Gareth for using farmfoods shop as well as all the others ✅👍

Hi mate,
Please could you do a video on your Air Fryer. I was thinking of getting one but not sure what i would use it for. Any pointers on that would be greatly appreciated by us.
Stevie in Fife.
I have just cooked a whole chicken and chuffed potatoes (roughed up to get crispy edges) in my Sage cooker, they took just over an hour, and the inside temperature was over eighty degrees. Sprinkle some flour over the roasting tray bits, add boiling water to make instant gravy.
Nice one pal
30 mins whole small chicken seems very little time
The juices on the plate were still pink......🤮
Gareth when I do a chicken in the ninja same as yours I pressure cook it for 20min then air crisp when I’ve drained the liquid a bird that size I would say 10 min air crisp good vid buddy
I thought I could hear keyboards clacking as soon as you washed that chicken........Love the videos.
That kinda makes sense
That's exactly what most restaurants do! 👍🏻
Hi Gareth, good video in parts. It was a bargain price and would be good for a family on a tight budget. I would have cooked it a bit longer but that's just me. I also like the skin when it's crispy. Now for the bad part of the video. You might not be aware that you don't wash chickens now as all the bacteria gets splashed all over your sink and worktops, also when you washed your hands you didn't use any soap. I'm guilty myself of washing a chicken year's ago until it was recommended not to. I hope i haven't offended you
Was thinking the same. In a professional kitchen he’d be sacked in a second. At home, he can do as he wants. Just hope he doesn’t get ill 🤒
The chickens been on a Diet Lol cheers for video
I have never washed a chicken, to be honest I never even heard of it before, until I saw it the other day in a video somewhere...
You should never wash raw chicken
I'd rather not eat chicken than eat a £1.99 chicken. The conditions they're kept in is horrific.
Well said
I suppose if you're skint all that goes out the window.
Don't wash raw chicken.
Dead is dead.Never understand people worried about the chickens welfare when they're going to eat it anyway. Doesn't matter whether Its well looked after or not, seems like a bit of conscience easing to me
I try to buy good animal welfare sources and organic if possible, even though I don’t believe animals can suffer like humans potentially can
I've stocked the freezer with 15 of these- had to call into two different Farmfoods stores mind. Fantastic value for money!
15!!! That's quite a few! Have you got a big freezer?
@@vampdiva6878 Absolutely. £30 for 15 delicious chickens. Help the British farmers.

@@vampdiva6878 Well I am happy to support the fantastic Ukraine farmers during this difficult time for them. Yep they'll keep me going for a good couple of weeks with a large family! We get through hundreds of chickens every year!
@@bangkokbert3440 Wowzers! Hundreds!... You're single handedly keeping the poultry industry going! And this is one reason why low prices can be invaluable. Having a large family and trying to keep them all well fed can get costly. Good on you. Have a lovely weekend

Imagine being a chicken, slaughtered by the neck, hung upside down and then told your only worth a couple of quid. I'm not a vegan or anything but i agree with Hugh Fernly Whittingstall, chicken shouln't be that cheap.
So poor people should be denied access to protein or die right?
You don't wash raw chicken, and definitely don't keep moving it from surface to surface... think you should steer clear of chicken reviews...
Hi Gareth do u prefer a fresh or a frozen chicken 🐔 which tastes the best from David Peterborough
Before I get to the chicken, McDonald's have increased the price of the Sausage and Egg McMuffin Meal from £4.59 to 4.79.
Now the chicken. It didn't look crispy enough on the outside, but it sure was moist. I wish you had tried one of the drumsticks, which are my favourite part of a roast chicken. It's certainly good value.
Apparently the chickens prior to 1950s were significantly smaller than conventional chickens today given hormones and whatnot to make them grow bigger, faster
Grain feed was also more expensive and there were shortages after WW2. Once those shortages went and selective breeding started chasing chickens doubled in size over a period of thirty years.

Ive had these there very nice and they do go along way i have one breast each weekend then have a stew or curry with the pickings from the chicken, £1.99 is great especially when most places you can't get one for under £3 ,sometimes i get lucky at my local perol station as they sale tesco products and I can get a large chicken for £2.40ish when there on offer due to useby date .
Halal chicken from the Ukraine, No thanks.
There are people who cannot afford to be picky so I would not criticise them for buying these. However, for myself, I think Halal slaughter is barbaric and should be left in the bronze age along with the people who push it. If this is the way they kill their animals, how do they raise them! Halal should be banned in the UK. Despite this I love your channel Gareth.
I agree with every word of this
100% correct well said
If you do a little research Kosher butchery is not that different. Draining all the blood from the animal is paramount for their dietary laws.
@@conormacdougal2344 That is true. Both cultures, Islam and Judaism, originate from the same part of the world, the same time period, c 2,000 BCE.
