Losing in Yu-Gi-Oh is not fun. We all know this. But your losses might not just be luck or your opponent's deck being expensive or top tier. Maybe it's your deck building. We've got a checklist of things to improve the cards in your deck.

Well my deck loses for 3 reasons. Consistency issues, 0 negates, and I run the cards I like. But I'm okay with that. I run what I like and I'd rather lose running what I like than running what wins. It's a personal choice. A choice I'm okay with.
That's the exact same reason I play my Dark Magician against any meta decks, there isn't too much chance of me winning, but the Dark Magician is my favourite monster, and if I do win, then I did it with my choice, not any meta
I always strived to include my favorite cards and tried to combine them with other, more relevant archetypes that bring out the best in them
Same, and i dont like handtraps because they dont fit my archetype
I mean, if consistency issues is a problem, you can fix that with cards you like.
Because I play my favorite archetype pure Darklords
I m trying to build one too, i just love how the deck runs
i play darklords in the most only use 3 of the predaplant for fusions and 2 krysta and my friends hate my darklord deck
Darklord diabolos is way more powerful. I love that deck & no lie keep it on my person like an ultra weeb 😅

Just play something like pk or inzektors they are cheap and fun
Save some money and 3x a structure deck like zombies
Silverfang 45 inzektors is like a $150 deck. I know, I’ve bought it.
@@Retr0Sk1ll swear it was cheap huh my bad
Hi Paul,
Here's my take, taking meta vs non meta out of the picture:
#1. Stop doing flashy plays with no purpose, when you can do a dull combo to output 8000 damage than do a flashy combo that outputs less damage. I like X monster better but X monster makes you lose.
#2 Summon contradiction. Needing 2 normal summons to combo sounds like a problem. But not just normal summons but the restrictions established.
Side note: 6 normal summons (including cards that search them out) aka cards that reach the same card.
#3. Your deck's strategies is auto countered by main stream techs. Being aware of the meta landscape. If people main call by the grave and all your effects are grave centric... Perhaps stop relying on those effects until the cards are less popular. Or your deck lacks answers to untargetable bosses or your side deck is useless.
#4 Not aware of PSCT: resolving effects incorrectly and getting called out. #1 reason why people lose. Read your cards... You thought an effect did something but then a ruling expert drops by and says it doesn't.
I play Dark Worlds IRL (pure build or as pure as possible), and people Ash Blossom the deck, but considering the deck has tons of draw power, that card doesn't work well against Dark Worlds. (Droll is a far superior option). But then there is Called By The Grave which can really hurt your major power plays. And because that is so rampant in the game, my deck is merely collecting dust. (Until we get that new Nobleman card and even then the deck won't benefit too much from it.)
@@romkin1197 ghost belle can negate called by the grave to help your plays resolve. I know a hand trap isn't as reliable an answer as you would like, but Dark World can draw for days so having it at that critical time to make a play resolve (like a Grapha) should be reasonable.
As a casual, when playing competitive i always build a deck around a small meta/rogue engine. My fav is engage-hornet drones. not only u can bait their response, u can put other sky striker tools/removals and then u can start ur play with less worry
#4 happens a LOT i knew a guy who was a dumbass cuz he never read his cards all the way thru & as a result often made a fool of himself also 1 time i was n tournament & another person was dueling & tried 2 activate a card claiming it doesnt target the judge came over & told him 2 read the 1st word on the card...the 1st word was target
Or just follow one simple rule that holds true in ALL trading card games....
"Whether the card is strong or weak, you can not draw it if you don't put it in the deck!"
I’ll lose mostly because I’ll misplay so bad that I can’t recover
You have 30 seconds for every play you make, use them! This is something I struggle with too, just take a breath and really plan things out. This is a strategy game when you boil it down. You got this 💪🏻
Banish for Cost my last one I was to negate an attack to synchro, but I negated the wrong attack
Hah you have no cards on your field and mine is fully loaded. Now I synchro summon Black Rose dragon and activate its ability clearing the board
I usually lose by getting sick of winning and then starting my "handicap play" rules where
I have to obey the limit/ban list and my opponent does not because I'm undefeated and bored with it!
I play Duel links and once I activated a card affect that I didn't like because when Duel links asks you to activate an effect it doesn't say the affect so I just let the timer run out and lost and I was made because I made an epic comeback that game with equip spells and my lunalight cat dancer
Because I suck. That's why I keep losing.
i feel ya
Uh huh
Same
Pick a strong meta contender and stick to it. You’ll learn and become a straight up yugi god, trust! You got this 💪🏻
@@BanishforCost I play Pendulum Guard Dragon.

That would be REALLY useful
I played Pendulum magician for 2 months before the new Banlist,

I just can't not misplay with pendulums,
I've been trying Sky Striker and have had a lot more luck and I'm actually enjoying this deck even more,
Sometimes a deck just isn't for you.
True, I tried Salads and could tell immediately it wasnt for me. All the decks I played, I played long term. Heroes, Shaddolls, Trickstars, Pendulums all are favorites of mine.
From my personal experience, decks that weren't for me, just refused to function even at a basic level. And this is using lists that have topped an event. I am somehow the only guy who can brick with Skystrikers and every other high tier deck atm lmao
@@romkin1197 same ,
In testing i could build pen boards like Triff Gaming,
But the second i sat down at the table at my locals the deck would either brick or I'd misplay
Zerotron 123 you use his 40 card build or 60? To be honest I think you should never 100% copy someone’s build. You should find ratios that work for you. My Pendulum deck changes up to fit my needs, like last week in locals I kept bricking with 40 cards and struggled going second so Im testing some more cards to help with that. I also upped to 45 card deck to see how that works. I say use other deck profiles for references or ideas of cards you can tech in or see how their ratios work for them. I had that problem using someone’s trickstar deck profile and It didnt feel right and a brick hand to me might be a decent hand for the person whose list I got it from
@@romkin1197 striker bricks so often that top players have standardised actions they take in case of a striker brick , one of the reasons it does well is it can still win through it's bricks

This helps and definitely resonates with me. I have a less conventional rogue deck that had it's first prototype version be really strong but it still had consistency issues. Funny enough, later versions are inferior due to having less or more cards. It's really hard to figure out the balance for.
If anyone is curious, it's a non archetype Dragon deck.
Because my favourite archetype is not getting new support and I don't want to play something else that I am not attached to.

Very good tips for figuring out what a deck needs! I think it's important for people to understand that there is no perfect deck and figuring out why your deck is losing, is important to understanding how to win. Always search for improvement!!
Because I draw then normal summon Borreload dragon. (No really don't make your extra deck sleeves the same colour as your main).
Aha as soon as I found out you were allowed different coloured sleeves for ED, the Blues came out 😏👌
Its common sense to use different colored sleeves for extra deck. I color code them, white, black, blue, purple base don what type they are.
@@sparda9060 This isn't tournament legal tho. I hope you are aware of that?
Forbidden Shadow playing Extravaganz with differnt coloured sleeves 😂😂😂🤷🏻♂️
@@eNRiskmc is it illegal? Last ruling that I checked was that as long as your sid Deck cards match with your main deck cards you're allowed to have any sleeve in your extra deck even if there were different sleeves.

“I play 60 cards, but I’m considering playing 62.”

These for sure are top tips. When i got back into yugioh after a long time away from the game i was surprised as to how quickly a deck summons monsters now or searches for cards as well as the few trap cards that’re included in decks now.
This was actually helpful♪ thanks! (Specially the trap discussion/tips)
Well for me, every time I get used to a deck, some shit on it gets banned or limited and their replacements are expensive so I don’t continue to practice with it. I now have Cyber dragons so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for it to stay untouched. Basically I need more understanding of a deck’s flow. I am also kinda new/ returning player so all these dam effects get confusing.
For me, it’s mainly a matter of knowing when to use negation. I’m fine setting up my board and figuring out how to play through negates, but when i have my board set up, even knowing choke points of certain decks, i still end up somehow either not using them right or just being unlucky that they have to push through it
That's literally me. I have the answer usually, but I either time it wrong or forget certain technicalities on certain cards. It frustrates me when I lose because I didn't understand how an opponent's card worked. At least I'm able to learn from my losses.
Thank you Team APS I really needed to hear this.
This video was really helpful, now I'm thinking by following your list and I'll make some changes for sure
Team APS: If it’s a card you need it has to be at three
Me, a Salamangreat player: 😭
Cyber Dragons are my main, but salads are my secondary. It hurts man
I remember running a red eyes deck without meteor black comet dragon.
You are not wrong. Decisions in deck building and knowing what you’re going to fight against is very important. The problem then becomes a TCG Rock Paper Scissors just with more variables. Strategy does indeed play a part, but at some level there is a series of rock, paper, scissors.
However, if I take a $10 Triamid deck against a $150 True Draco deck, I’m more than likely gonna get my ass kicked. Reason being, the true Draco deck has a lot of GOOD decisions in its expensive, pricey decisions. But still good decisions.
Triamids can have good decisions, but I only have $10 on me so I can’t afford Demise, twin twisters, etc. Basically, what I’m boiling down to is, stay in your lane. Don’t take your penguin deck to a YCS lol
A very helpfull vid, the ratio plus normal summon thing is indeed very useful to remember.
Thanks a bunch ^^
Great video guys. I'll probably share it with some of the beginners in my group. Though to be fair, sometimes it does come down to money. But that's only like 15% of the problem if it's same tier vs same tier levels. My example would be, let's say 2 players are both playing Dragunities. One of said players can't afford Barcha. Barcha is currently the bread and butter of combos right now it seems. Both are very playable and strong. But one of them will be able to pull off just that little bit more. The same with decks that can use Pot of Extravagance well. If you can't afford the PoE, you probably won't do as well as the player that can. But all of your points are very valid. Once again, great video!
I always make bad excuses when I lose! What's the worst excuse you've heard for losing? #AskTheSquad

My biggest issue is finding the cards that work best with my decks. I enjoy trying to give my decks their own twists, but I end up with almost exactly what someone else had posted online since I can never find cards that would work how I want to play the deck. I'm just overwhelmed with the quantity of cards to choose from, I guess. Thanks so much for the video, though.
Verry helpful thanks guys 👏 🔥 as a returning player I find I as you called it "the Anime effect" XD loved that 😆 and am now fixing up my deck and looking forward to using it =D great content as always 🔥

I used to play a paleozoic frog deck that was 10 monsters and 30 traps, and it's one of the most consistent decks I've ever played. So, I'm glad you guys mentioned the unless you're playing paleozoic or altergeist thing
Nice tips! This is very helpful for new players and even players that have difficult times. My Blue-EyesDivineDragon deck run 8 powerful monsters. One lvl 7 and the other 7 are lvl 8. x3 Blue-Eyes, x1 Alt Blue-Eyes, x1 Dragon Spirit of White, x1 Blue-Eyes Chaos Max Dragon, x1 Divided Dragon Lord Felgrand, x1 Ark Brave Dragon and even with 8 my deck runs fast and keeps going alot by draw power, sending to grave to summon back from grave, ECT.. cards. I also find 8 the perfect number because Blue-Eyes is a lvl 8 dragon. The rest of my monsters are lvl 4, 3, and 1.

Team APS, here is a story from near the end of MR3 when I played competitively.
So Metalfoes were released in the OCG, I seen a deck list that topped a locals, I gave it a shot to learn the deck. The build was using Cyberstein for shenanigans. After I got the build down, I tweaked it for the TCG for when they would come to the TCG. I had to drop quite a few cards to throw in cards like the Magispecter engine (bunbuku into kirin), a couple of Archfiend Eccentric, I even managed to fit in 3 Amorphage Sloth (As it can lock out the extra deck for the opponent if I went first with my Ultimaya Tzolkin build), the deck also ran Summon Limit.
When I was tweaking it, I saw Pot of Riches and thought "Oh well, since Metalfoes can pop their other metalfoe pendulum monsters for its effect, this should be easy to pull off." Unfortunately, even though it was easy, it did stop Ultimaya Tzolkin, Fusion plays as well. But I was really stubborn with this card and left it in, despite it being a dead card 90% of the time. In hindsight, I should had dropped it for something more useful.
So I would say, even if in theory that a deck could make use for a card in a realistic setting, the card may not even work out or be more of a hindrance.
Thanks guys. I don't play Yu-Gi-Oh but it helped me with deck building in general. Much appreciated.
Im going to my first local tomorrow, wish me luck!
Good luck 👍 and did you win?

I know u might not see this but good job
Are Monarchs still viable?
I kinda want to come back to Yu-Gi-Oh because I loved Monarchs and Cyber Dragons.
Yes check on Amazon i think the Monarch is 10$ if i'm not wrong
Monarchs are usable but can be bricky. Cydras are a very viable Rogue deck, but now Cyberload Fusion and Nachster can be a bit expensive (22 and 8-10 euros as of now) and you also want to run a lot of actually expensive backrow removal (Lightning storm, evenly...) if you run the OTK build. Personally I'm more of a Cydra Stun fan, which I guess it could be more budget friendly as you prefer to go first and you might do okay w/o Lightning Storm.
The deck used to be more expensive, but the Cyber Emergency reprint helped a lot to make it more budget friendly. I would recommend it, but test it first to see if it fits your style :)
I love all your videos but i would like to see some longer videos of deck techs and some videos with more than just two people dueling. Like a four person duel or maybe 6 if you have the people
No how matter how many times I've lost, my Evil Eye build has been grinding out against alot of the current decks (Salamangreat, Heros, Altergiests, etc.) and it's only got more consistent as I play, and now I feel like I win more than I lose! Thanks for the content and good advice.
It's getting more support in the next main set
Shit ya'll would probably laugh at my deck, ive never played competitive so i dont know many strats but my deck is a literal put together deck. My favorite monsters are charmers
Eh everyone loves charmers
My only decks are the codebreakers starter, the gates of the underworld structure, and the order of the spellcasters structure, but I really love the dark world cards
Sometimes I miss having a deck that wasn't so streamlined. I miss those grind games against my friends. Those duels where we were both waiting to draw certain cards for our combos to go off. Those times where a duel could instantly turn into the other player's favour. And most importantly, when a deck slowly dismantled an opponent's field, turn by turn, until you eventually attacked for game.
It was nice being able to play out your turn and seeing what the opponent was playing during their turn and then getting back to your turn to figure out where to go from there.
Those were simpler times...if only my friends could see what this game has become nowadays. I feel like it would be a big shock to their systems.
In my town of 6000 im the only charmer user its lonely
I have to use my original it changes a little but my deck always hangs against my friends, I just cant use a pre built deck or mainstream deck, its my nindo my ninja way hahha also heart of the cards everytime my friends mock the heart of the cards i somehow win i had 200 LP and my friend had 16000LP because of his healing card and i beat him

Thanks guys. I enjoy putting together decks and playing them against each other. Most of my decks are constructed out of booster packs, absolutely no premade decks so their are a lot of substitutes. I've only watched in full, the first real Yu-Gi-Oh anime. The others I caught bits and pieces but the characters and their personalities just didn't appeal to me. I like the fact that everything is new to me coming back into the game after a decade. The rules don't seem to have changed much. Though it was out, the banned list was never an issue because we've never played FTK or OTK decks. Combos weren't even a thing back then. These new decks are a lot of fun and despite what people say, building a deck based on cards only because they look cool is actually fun & if you're goal is a challenge, trying to make them all work together is the best part. I'd like to see you guys do that and I'm sure Trell will rise to the challenge. No specific architypes on purpose, strictly based on looks then later after the "vanity draft" then building a functional deck and dual. I think Trell & Paul would be an awesome match up with that.

@@MrZahsome I mean, True Draco wins against Mine almost 100% of the time because of the backrow removal. Both Heritage and Disciplines are efficient enough to handle Mine. If not, you can always play Anti-Spell Fragrances. Most meta players main or side deck Twin Twisters or Cosmic Cyclone. Sky Strikers have a searchable MST.
@@MrZahsome spicy take, you must love deck building badly
this is a great topic i know i lost every duels because i get nervous and i don't want to make a error during a duel it's embarrassing
I enjoy your supernatural video with the tarot cards based. Im into that stuff.
Why my deck doesn't win:
I choose NOT to make the game unfun for anyone else by NOT playing a deck that is designed to make my opponent NOT play the game. Konami has been proactively churning out negation cards every new release. It's time to draw the line in the sand and stand up to non-interactive game environments.
Dark Glass then play an OTK deck, they get to play and you win turn 2
@@Bakanlink he literally just said he likes interacting. FTK, OTK or decks that just vomit several negates are not fun to play against, and now you could make the argument that OTK decks are more fair because they are about breaking boards, but they shouldn't have to exist to answer to non-interacting boards in the first place. Konami needs to stop making combo heavy decks or control based strategies and make the game about going into longer than 3-4 turns
First
Omar_Omar 13 wow you really have to say that
Third
I agree with the trap ratio. If not running subterrors, dracos, altergist etc where u rely on traps to do your combos then 5 to 1 is plenty.
As a Red Dragon Archfiend player I had problems in the past with Ratios and Normal Summons. Now I'm doing great. Got a Abyss/Void Ogre Turbo build.
I run two copies of Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell and side two copies of Awaken the Dragon. Was thinking of adding a Skill Drain to be extra annoying.
There’s also traps literally made to advance your strategy but dodge effects at the same time it really does depend on the deck
I haven't been a Yu-Gi-Oh player for a long time but I remember back when I used cyberdragon and mained a 60 card deck of it (online, I play here and there on Yu-Gi-Oh dueling Nexus.)
Great video bro
Very good tips for any tcgs and also in mtg sealed and draft I was watch out early wins.
Honestly all of this stuff makes sense for me one of the big problems is i want to play a specific deck but i don't know what to have in it because i haven't played since XYZ monsters and all this new stuff makes me question what should be in this deck. How do you go about finding out what cards would work in the deck you want to make?
Great Video :D
Looking up deck techs on CZcams is a good start. You can at least get some ideas. Google your decks archetype too and you should be able to find some lists so you can see things other players do. And of course the community is always here.
I'm going to use these tips to get my game on
My strategy is to test a deck through like duel after duel, and after about 10 or so, remove any cards that never saw play and replace them. Rinse and repeat until your entire deck gels together well
I tend to stick to 10 traps 5-6 dosent seem to cut it in a hapie deck i could be wrong but I'm also running 3 hysteric soooooo I dunno if soul charge wasnt too big on lp cost per monster summon it could have worked as a replacement for hysteric party (I guess)
Back when i first started winning games, cause I actually started learning how the game worked. I told my friend to abandon what he believed in if he wanted to git gud... he built fables. Some people just can't grow out of the heart of the cards mentality.
Hey thanks for the vid. I know both as a returning player and a new player this video helps. I know I have a bad habit with ratios. Need to play test more but no one to test with and no internet so it's test hands aka solitaire lol
No internet... how are you here?
I use a Dark magician deck from the ‘legendary dragon deck box’ (for I am but a filthy casual) and my friend uses a relatively old but still has 4000 attack point cards. And it is amazing how I win almost every time.
