  • In this video I'll show you how to remove your NSS or Neutral Safety Switch. A while back I made a video on how to clean and repair your NSS but a few folks needed help finding it and getting it out... so here it is.

    Thanks for showing how to remove the NSS along with it's location. Now I know what it will involve to fix my problem. Using both of your videos would give all the information needed one would need.

    Thanks for both videos. Cutting the tie-ties was an issue. I cut the bottom one first, then used a 6 inch hacksaw blade on the top one. Then I disconnected the connector and that allowed me to work the middle tie-tie low enough that I could cut it. Getting the NSS off was a lot easier than the one in your video. After cleaning and reassembling not only does the backup lights work again, the OverDrive does too.

    Here's a tip I just discovered for those lower two hard-to-reach zip ties. They have a little lever in the zip tie the lets you unlock them. Get a 18" coat hanger wire and bend a little 180 degree hook on the end. Now hook this bend around the zip tie with one hand and get your other hand's finger up to the release lever on the zip tie. Keep working that release lever with your finger while you tug on the wire hook and they release pretty easily.

    First of all, thank you for the video. It was instrumental in changing mine. I had some of the same problems except mine was done on the vehicle. Prying the nut stripped off the top threads as the nut is a stronger material. I thought I was screwed until I spotted a tool I had for decades, a battery post puller. It has thin jaws that let me tighten the nut to good threads and fit between the transmission and the body. I had to pull the red rubber end off the handle to let it clear but it pulled the switch off in seconds. Just thought I would pass that tip along. Cheers.

    Any ideas for if you broke the little fingers off of the cast arm part of the NSS, and then broke the arm part out of the plastic housing? I have been alternating wd-40, a propane torch and a chisel to try and loosen/cut off the remaining "donut" of material from the selector shaft. Not having much luck.

    Hey guys... just watched this (and many other vids from you guys too) and have a question about where the Jeep TJ 2.4 auto NSS may be located. And whether it can be 'easily' gotten to from below the vehicle without needing to drop anything else away from the Jeep? Thoughts? Where is it??

    I had much less luck when I did mine. I ended up wedging shims behind to push it off, along with a lot of PB blaster. That said, I live in Chicago and tend to have corrosion issues with everything I attempt to work on. Thanks for another good video Matt! Be careful and resist the urge to pry against the back of the switch too hard which was plastic on mine...

    Matt, I am needing to change out the NSS on my '97 Grand Cherokee
    straight 6. The part number is SW11030. It looks like the bottom part of
    a light bulb with a 3 prong connector. It screws in just over the oil
    pan. Any tips or vids on this one? I can't even get the freakin' wire
    plug off and I don't want to break anything. Not that anything like that
    has ever happened to me before. Any help would be great!

    I ended up having to replace mine. It was so bad I could not get it of without breaking it apart, but the truck is 20 years old anyhow. My question though, is why does the nut in the shaft only need to be finger tight?

    • @calibermoon
      @calibermoon Před 9 lety +1

      michael brown Because the shaft rotates. If torqued too tight, it might damage the sensor.

    I have this 02 jeep grand Cherokee, and I have a problem with it. When ever I'm driving it down the road it will just shut off on me. I don't know what to try to fix next. I have tried the computer twice, and the crankshaft sensor, and camshaft it is putting out a security code but I'm having it reset this week what else should I try if that doesn't work?

    • @joeisaacs2172
      @joeisaacs2172 Před 9 lety +1

      You might check the wires leading into the coil pack at the back of the engine to make sure they aren't broken or exposed. I had a simular problem with my 01 XJ and it was throwing a code for cam and crank position sensors. I ended up buying a new ignition coil connector from autozone and it solved the issue.

    Got major issues, initially I was adding additional reverse lights to my rear bumper on my 96 XJ. I'm splicing into my green/brown wire at the reverse bulb and using the relay that came with the lights but for some odd reason the reverse lights no longer illuminate. And yes the bulbs are good, I've checked them twice! The brakes and hazards work fine, I thought it might be the old NSS so I bought a new one and installed it but now the new NSS only allows me to start in park, not starting in neutral. What did I miss? I'm at tedtug58@yahoo.com, I would appreciate the help!
