    Good to know and what a PITA to service. The wife and I put over 100 miles on the trails in the Pigeon River State Forest N. Michigan yesterday. One section near the Cornwall flooding had actually become the river, not deep but what a hoot. We had a blast and found a couple of campgrounds we didn't know about. A great day in the north woods.

    Back in the late '90s I had the same problem with my NSS in my '92 Cherokee. I was looking at the same $250 replacement cost. Fortunately 4Wheel Drive and Sport Utility Magazine published an article about how to repair the NSS. Mine was easy to pull off. It was full of gunk. I cleaned off and sanded all of the contacts, filled it up with dielectric grease and routed a breather hose into the engine compartment. So yes, I did know that they had a breather tube. That one article saved me $250.

    I remember when I first started working on cherokees, the NSS was only $75 new. Crazy how prices have changed. You should look for those every time you hit pull-a-part and have a couple on the shelf.

    Thanks for another great tip Matt. I spent the weekend fixing an oil pan leak on the stroker engine I built for my Cherokee. No problem, just drop the pan and replace the gasket right? Nope, it's a Cherokee, so like 12 hours later, after welding together multiple tools to reach bolts without taking the entire jeep apart, I finally got it back together. If I could be any super hero, I would be Reed Richards or Elastigirl. Man, that would be useful!

    Old School method of removing fiberglass splinters is to rub ladies pantyhose back and forth across the area, in your case slide your arm in and out, and it will pull the fibers from your skin.

    I agree the aluminum tubes for the rod links for the rear and front differentials is the way to go. They are a more durable than steel, so unless you hit extremely hard at an off angle, they should last longer than the steel.
    I have used aluminum, chromoly and carbon fiber links on dirt cars on different cars making differing amounts of stress on the rearends and I never had a problem with one kinking or breaking.
    In fact I know folks who use them in rock crawling and mud racing that use aluminum rods with no problem.
    In fact I do believe it function's or articulates much like a leaf spring, or torsion rod, in regards to the flexing motion!

    I put in brand new exhaust (first time I welded exhaust before) but transmission was not bolted all the way up. After I welded exhaust in place I raised transmission back into place only to have my exhaust raise a little too close to floor boards and gas tank skid~now I’m making a bracket to lower my exhaust back down 😂

  • @waynesanders1406
    @waynesanders1406 Před 6 lety

    If the exhaust is near it, it's going to heat that sumbeech up and make it more brittle over time. You should probably heat shield it or re-route the exhaust. Mine isn't near it. I removed it and cleaned it a few years back pretty easily. I just extended the breather hose on my transmission (it was completely missing) by stabbing in some tapered vacuum fittings with a vacuum T on the thicker side. I capped off the unused T with a silicone cap and ran the hose up (it's polyurethane garden hose from Lowe's) up to the top. I guess I'll be doing that for the NSS too.

    • @waynesanders1406
      @waynesanders1406 Před 6 lety

      Wait, did you heat-wrap your catalytic converter? I've heard you shouldn't do that. Why did you do it? After having to deal with that fiberglass once I decided I won't ever do it again unless i get the non-fiber-glass stuff. IT's triple the price but worth it to not have that stuff on your arms, and potentially face and eyes.

    If you make one end of your skid plate hook up over something you would only half to lift one end at a time to remove or install it. Would make it easier out on the trail if you ever half to mess with it. Always upgrades to make thats my motto break it upgrade it haha. It's a tossup wether breaking it or fixxing it is more fun.
