Had my new NSS for about 2 months now. I'm afraid of trying to replace it? Until I saw your video. Now I'm more condient in fixing this. Thank you
Thank you for posting this no nonsense video.
I have a tip for anyone watching about how to thread the new NSS cable and harness through. I didn't use a string/tape/coat hanger (I see no possible way of pulling the new wiring harness through where the wiring goes as the opening is not big enough there. All I did was... Pay close attention to how the original NSS wiring was positioned. Then I took out the Old NSS. Then I held the NEW NSS wiring harness from above while letting the NSS housing drop down from above through the larger opening area near where it will be (not exactly where the wiring goes trough), while still holding the wiring harness from above (like you are fishing it down!). THEN FLOSS THE NEW NSS WIRING INTO POSITION by firmly dragging it into place, past the throttle cable which is also down there, then zip tie it back to the wires of other parts that the original NSS was zip tied to, above the transmission.
I have been being told different reasons for my Jeep Cherokee having problems. All I knew were wrong. This confirms that I do not need my transmission ripped apart or a new starter that was replaced already. Thank you for this. I now have information to get it fixed correctly.
No prob Jillian. Good luck fixing it!
Your nut and pry bar solution was priceles, thank you very much!
Honestly you're the only video on here that gives the most info on how to get the darned thing off
Kainine Eli glad to hear! And thanks so much for the feedback. I try and get right to the point in those to my videos.
You're welcome! Do you have any pointers on getting those little teeth off? It's the only thing I'm really having trouble with
Kainine Eli are you referring to the steel tabs on the Locking washer?
Kainine Eli I used a pocket screwdriver on them to bend them over
I might have to give that a try
Thanks so much for this video. It's far more easy to follow than the shop manual, or any of the text explanations on the forums I follow. I've been having trouble with my NSS for years, and hadn't replaced it because of the cost. Now I can do it myself and hopefully solve my reverse light problem (they don't always come on, yikes!)!
Thanks for posting! My girlfriends 2003 Jeep Cherokee is given her problems with starting, I believe the neutral safety switch is the culprit. Now, I will know what it looks like and where it’s located. Thanks again!
This helps a lot, thank you. I’ve got two 96 Jeep Cherokee sports and I’m pretty sure the park/neutral switch is going bad. But this video helps me out so much, so again thank you.
1kenworthlover No problem, glad to help out! Thanks for the comment
I just watched your video for future reference. You did a phenomenal job explaining the why and the wherefore for this job. Many thanks for taking the time.
Awesome content on all aspects from prying the old one off to info on the loom & plug! Thanks a million buddy
No problem at all pal, always happy to hear when a video helps someone out
Love the shaft talk; keep up the great work
This is a great and straight to the point video!....very helpful...you are right i wish i had a lift cause my ground game sucks...lol...thanks again!
Huge thanks to you and #BleepinJeep for your vids. I was able to clean/fix mine pretty quick with your vids.
Angel Young good to hear man and thanks for the comment!
Thank you. Just enough detail to get the job done!
Ok so my cruise control wasn’t working light came on wouldn’t engage
So after checking all vacuum lines and all other options I put it on a scan
That showed neutral safety switch bad
I replaced that and now I have cruise control again less the. $10.00 fix
Thanks for all your videos
I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0
Thanks for sharing your repair story. Glad to hear the video helped out! And thanks for your comment!
Love the use the nut technique. Thanks for the help
Thanks for the video. It walked me through it step by step. I appreciate it.
Thank you! Comment means a lot
Thanks so much for the tutorial. The NSS on my '93 Cherokee Sport just failed. I've actually been starting the motor in neutral the last few weeks which is a sign of impending failure.
D Carlson so yours starts fine in neutral?
I noticed that my NSS began to fail when my back up lights would not activate. Eventually, my jeep would not start while in park, and then after a while, I could only start my jeep in neutral. This was clear evidence of the switch was slowly failing.
D Carlson my back up lights stopped working to. The only difference is mine wont start in neutral. But sometimes my jeep will start perfectly
Thanks for the video, it was tricky to get off prior to watching this.
Thanks for the video; thought I'd be able to clean up the old one until the backing came off in a few pieces.
No problem man, thanks for the comment!
And maybe I missed it, but since yours was already off you need to bend out the teeth on that nut before trying to remove it. Well, you don't have to, but it's a hell of a lot easier especially if you are hoping to clean & reinstall which may be what you have to do whike you wait for your new one to be delivered.
Also using a mini flat bar may work better than a screw driver as it spreads out the force on that stupid plastic body. Great video btw!
Just saved me a buncha money. Thank you! Subscribed
Great video, anyone ever tell you you look a lot like the rapper lil’ Dicky.
TheFountainhead69 thanks man! And haha I know you're the first person to say that. I'll have to check him out!
HAHA yea i thought it was him at first
I have a 01 Jeep Cherokee and it won’t go into drive but it will go into first gear could that be the safety neutral switch
Great video, thanks. Mine won't start in park or neutral but if I pull back on the shifter just a little in either position, it will start. I'm wondering if this is something that can be fixed with adjustment?
Thanks for the vid! I broke mine off just like you did.. guess I'm gonna have to buy a new one
HAHAHAHA Nice pretty cool seeing you here. Love the wrecked J
I think this is whats wrong with mine--- because if I jump the starter with a screwdriver it starts just fine.
Just got my new piece in the mail, came back for a quick refresher--- and putting it in right after this.
Was it fix ? I do the something to start mine. I got my jeep for 300 buck it got p705 code I change starter switch nothing but I can turn with screwdriver.
I have power through everything but I have no crank or anything you think it could be my NSS won’t start in park or neutral
Certainly possible
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow thanks bro
GOOD VIDEO.
Super helpful, thank you sir
Great video. Iv been getting the code for it for months now, though don’t see and troubles in performance.. do you still recommend replacing?
Awesome bro thanks for that information
This can make your reverse lights stop working?
I would also like to know this! My reverse lights have been acting up for over a year, they don’t usually come on but sometimes they do if I wiggle the shifter. My NSS finally bit the dust today, so I’ll have to replace it soon and if it fixes my reverse lights I’ll come back and let you know!
According to bleepinjeep on CZcams yes they can
Yes. A faulty NSS can definitely prevent it reverse lights from coming on.
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow I just had this problem. While trying to crank it. Tried to get a jump truck dies. If anyone can help let me know.
Any recommendation on which replacement NSS to buy?
Thanks for the easy how too
Was wondering cruise control light comes on
Won’t engage has vacuum too it
Changed actuator still won’t engage
Now my neutral safety switch needs to be replaced can that cause the cruise control not to work? Any ideas helpful
Great video! Subscribed!
Thanks man! Appreciate that
After 2001, they changed this. I have an 03 and everything I google has just a little shiny screw in three prong plug. Did the change it into some new design? Showing AutoZone part no. SW11030
So i changed the nss out and it still wont start....any suggestions...could it be a ground or the relay to the starter?
Ignition starter switch.
Great Video. You know your stuff
My Bypass is Fucking Safety switch then shift into Neutral with foot on brake start jeep then put in park if getting out wile jeep warms up lol
Sounds legit enough
May I ask what is the purpose of the NSS? My Jeep starts ok in P. Is there some other thing the NSS does? Thanks
is this the same steps for a 2005 Jeep liberty, on repolacing the NSS ?
*AFTERMARKET SWITCH FOR 88-96: amzn.to/2C9cRXy is that supposed to be for 1997-2001 because the Amazon description says that instead, so not sure if this was a copy and paste error on the video...
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I'll take a look at it and fix it
I went ahead and corrected that in the description and comment. Thanks again for noticing pointing that out
Would this, if bad, cause an incomplete firing/no start?
Bro i have a 04 Cherokee and i was having to turn the key to on possession then press the brakes halfway before it would crack no other order. sometimes it would start like any other automatic and just start with no brake. But it wont start with key now. I had to take cover off the starter relay and manually move the arm and it starts right up. Does that sound like NSS ??
That doesn't sound like an NSS off hand. Hard to say without seeing it though. Let me know how you make out
NoNonsenseKnowHow i will. But what else could not be telling the starter relay to work? ignition?
@@whocares5188 it could be the NSS, a wiring issue, corroded contacts, a bad relay, bad ignition switch or probably a few other things. But without looking at a wiring diagram it's hard to say offhand. I work on all makes and models so I'm not incredibly familiar with any particular vehicle. Best thing to do would be get a wiring diagram and go from there honestly.
If it won't release out of park might need a brake sensor
Did you install the NSS with the xj on Park??
Thanks!
No problem! Thank you!
Hey I have a 95 Jeep Cherokee and runs great however it started feeling like it would throw itself into neutral every two seconds now it will start but won’t engage to any gears could this be the issue? Thanks again man
Honestly know that sounds more like an issue with your transmission or shifter linkage. I could be wrong though. It's hard to say without looking at it
Just did mine on my 93 decided to pop the original 157k switch open contacts were done for
Awesome! Yeah they get pretty worn out
So I replaced mine and now at 15mph every time without fail is has a small hiccup like it looses power for a split second I’m gunna change out my asd relay next kinda lost on what to do
Tim Hughes damn that sucks. And you didn't have this problem before? I would check out #bleepinjeeps channel and see if they might have a video to help out. I haven't had that same problem before. Tell him NoNonsenseKnowHow sent ya! lol. Sorry I couldn't be of more help
"loses"
Question, I read on a forum that a NSS can cause the transmission to shift funny, is this true info? It said it caused overdrive not to engage or slip off overdrive, are you aware of this?
I personally haven't heard of this honestly so I can't really comment. If you're having a slipping transmission, I tend to doubt that the NSS would be the problem. But let me know how you make out. Sorry I couldn't be of more help
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow well the problem I'm having on my 89 is, when I'm cruising on just normal speeds in town, 1st and 2nd shift fine, when it gets to 3rd, the rpms drop lower then they should and the vehicle drags, I accelerate and it's barely gettinspeed , if I let go of the gas pedal and then press it harder then it kicks in just fine I to overdrive and speeds up normal, once I get to 4th gear it does the same thing and sometimes doesn't even let me go past 50mph, not sure what my deal is, I've already done the tps and adjustment.
I ended up breaking it like you did, the part that the nut tightens onto is the only thing still on the transmission. The rest off the nss detatched from it. I can't put the nut on it now, is there anything you suggest to get the remaining pieces off? Would pliers just get it off with enough force?
Went to clean or replace mine and found that my adjustment bolt fell out . Anybody know the size , length , diameter and thread pitch on thing damn bolt ?
Good video
I had to shake my shifter to start every once in a while. Replaced with aftermarket switch, now I get the P0705 code! I have tried many times to adjust it, still get the code, even tried a second switch! Any ideas? Also... now my passenger side reverse light shuts off when I hit the brake (super weird). WTF?!?!?! 1999 XJ with 238,000 miles... I wana see 1/4 million!
Interesting, I haven't heard or seen of that happening before. Sounds like you maybe have a short in the harness or something like that
Is the nss a part in the transmission Range Sensor, or is it the same piece?
Same piece
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow thanks, my 98 has been acting wierd, throws p0705 and p0562 thinking its a bad ground wire cause doesnt have typical bad NSS issues
@@austinsoos440 no problem. And yeah that could be. Might be worth it to take it apart and clean it out as well. Or replace it. Common for these to fail
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow appreciate it, and thanks for the quick response
No problem
I have a 96 2wd. Took nss off and tried cleaning it but had no luck starting up. Trying to order a new one but am curious if it matters if in the description of some it says its for 4wd. Would it really effect anything or does it have to be a 2wd drive nss?
Nick Cimino to be honest with you I'm not really sure. I would have to do some research online. If it fits I'd have to guess it would work. Let me know what you come up with I'd be curious to know. Thanks
It ended up being the ignition switch! Got a new one for 35 bucks from advance and it fired right up. Still glad I had took the time to take the nss off and clean it anyways. Thank you for the feedback!
What size is the bolt. I think it’s 3/4. But I want al the dimensions since mine is gone please?
You're talking about the nut on the NSS? I honestly don't remember what size it was. If I didn't say it in video sorry about that. If you comment what size it is when you find out I can update the description though for people in the future
My Jeep isn’t starting. Tested my battery, alternator and starter. Replaced this and it still won’t cut on. Any idea what it could be?
Nice vid man
ReNegaDe-SpitFire thank you very much for the feedback and hopefully the video helped out
NoNonsenseKnowHow Yeah I have no reverse lights on a cold start but I have them once it's been driven a bit. Definitely nss and wanted to see how other peeps went about taking it off. This vid was better than even most if the big car channel videos and deserves a thumbs up
ReNegaDe-SpitFire I really appreciate that. Thank you and thank you for sharing your experience as well.
So I just busted the part that you were taking about get stuck mainly on the old part. Any suggestions on how to get that piece off the "arm"?
Curt collins sorry to hear. yeah you got to get it with a couple screwdrivers and a pry bar. I can't really think of any better ways to explain it. You might be able to get a pair of vice grips on there as well. But since it's already broken, bust the whole thing off of their shows just the sleeve left on the shaft
The plug connector was the black one!🤣
Not sure what part of the video you're referring to
Difference for a standard shift?
What exactly does the adjustment on these nss do/adjust
If it's not adjusted properly the car may not start when it's in park. Basically there is some wiggle room on the shifter when you're in park. In on the extreme end of both sides of wiggle room it should still start. And it should still start in neutral as well. If all that's good then it's adjusted properly
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow thank you. Im guessing my 99 4x4 has the same one and same transmission. Aw4? I tried taking the old one off and cleaning the contacts on the inside. It didn't work. Ive been arcing the starter to crank it. Its just a place toy not a daily but its getting old
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow I noticed on Amazon that they seem to all be for the Aw4 trans. Mine 4x4 but I didn't see anything about which works on a 2wheel drive or 4wd
Can you direct me to a tutorial for a 95 grand Cherokee zj I'm dying here
Yaahkmo Raps I haven't personally replaced one on a Grand Cherokee. And I don't see any specific videos on it. But it looks pretty much the same based on what I see in this one. czcams.com/video/l2rkW58bFqo/video.html
Yaahkmo Raps let me know how you make out and if there's any differences between the Cherokee! Thanks
How do you remove a busted safety switch?
Usually can get it with a pry bar and screwdriver
What did you charge someone for that
I'm not sure what the total was. I don't get involved with pricing. I just fix things. LOL. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Where is the link?
Evan Barron in the description. I'll add it to the comments as well
Evan Barron HERE IS THE SWITCH ON AMAZON:
OEM MOPAR FOR 97-01: amzn.to/2C7mM03
AFTERMARKET FOR 88-96: amzn.to/2C9cRXy
AFTERMARKET FOR 88-96 : amzn.to/2C9co7K
Thanks but found it after posting. Issue I am having is I guess the 2002 has changed the config. I went to Auto Zone and Advance and both showed this $12 switch. Found a diagram that shows a different config. like mechanic said its internal. So I dont need the part.
Evan Barron cool, thanks for the update. Good luck with the repair
I change mine but now jeep turns off when put it in reverse any one have an idea what’s going on?
I was under the car tightening that nut and almost died.
Invest in good jack stands and always put something In back wheels.
LOL you link is for a switch that costs 349$ LOL garbage! i can get them all day long for $69.00
nevermind...just saw that there is another link for a less expensive.
Aftermarket is 100% okay for this switch
Yeah for these aftermarket is definitely the way to go based on the price difference. I've had pretty good luck with the aftermarket ones
