This guy is awesome. My starter relay was still in the fuse block and I couldn't wiggle it loose enough to come out, so I wanted to see if all the wiggling was enough to make it startup. It started right up. So I would suggest that before you try to remove it and do the wire trick, you try wiggling the starter relay & make sure it's all the way in, then try to start it up again. It worked for me.

You probably wouldn't make it as a car salesman. Too honest. But thanks for being that way. We need more of that in this world. Good job Dave.

In my limited research about Jeeps, that is a pretty normal fault. I looked into the cost of those too, way expensive. I'm glad you left in the ignition switch section, you keep it real. I found an XJ in my area. :)

That's awesome Wyatt !!! I've never had to put in a NSS but I have done a ton of ignition switches so even old guys like me can see something new hahaha

In the old days when starter motors were easy to get to, I had to remind myself to routinely test the signal wire at the motor while turning the key, before changing any parts when diagnosing a no crank no start. It kept me out of trouble by sending myself a necessary 'don't be stupid' warning if I was thinking about swapping the starter motor. If it didn't light then I'd look for a wiring diagram. These days, that approach doesn't work so well, with some starters underneath intake manifolds and often really hard to get to. Even so, as you nicely show, one can use the start relay to do it from a distance, making the assumption that wires between them are OK. That gives enough direction to find and test the bad part directly before tossing it. The other sneaky problem that can bite you is the bad engine ground, which is easy enough to find if you remember to think of it. In my experience, not always, ha ha ha.

At least we don't have the same guy that writes the instructions for putting together the cheap Chinese particle board furniture writing the vehicle repair manuals. At least not yet.
Watching the video in the early morning here has just made my day. Rock on Dave!

Common jeep issue, nss. I just bought one like yours but black for 300 bucks because it wouldnt start. Cleaned and lubed the nss and it runs like a top. Great vid, I like real people saying it like it is.

Dave, you are a good man. When I started watching the video, I suspected the safety switch. Had that problem with my buddies 96. Being a lock smith must have come in handy when you needed to swap out the ignition switch. Nice job and I’m sure the new owner appreciates your honesty. Considering selling my 65 Mustang and purchasing an old Jeep to work on. Would like something early 50s. I missed a cj3b from 53 a few years back. Thanks for the good content.

Dave you rock! This video has helped me so much. I am trying to diagnose this issue on my cherokee and i really can't tell if it's the NSS or Ignition Switch. My diagnostic tests are suggesting BOTH are bad. how can that be?
I know my relay is good. I get continuity between 85 and 86. After hooking up pin 85 to battery ground and pin 86 to the battery positive, there is an audible click from the relay and i get continuity between 30 and 87.I tested every fuse in the PDC. I get continuity with all of them. I tested F19 in the junction block. Continuity there too.
With the relay unplugged, hooked up pin 85 to the 85 cavity with a jumper cable. Hooked up pin 86 to the battery positive. No click. That suggests that the NSS is not providing a ground.
With the relay unplugged, hooked up pin 85 to the battery ground, and pin 86 to the 86 cavity. With my helper turning the key to crank, the relay makes no click. Now this is suggesting that the ignition switch is not providing power.
