Texas Chainsaw is, by far, amongst my favourite horror films if all time (The Wicker Man being my all time favourite film) so I’m delighted to buy it again and make it one of my most rebought films of all time as well! I can always remember when I first finally got round to watching a legit version on VHS back in the Nineties when it was finally made available to film fans after a prolonged ban under the ever watchful eye of my BBFC nemesis James Ferman. I’d just finished a days work at the Post Office and walking home at night popped into our local video store just as it was about to close to be greeted by the manager who immediately said, “Evening Nik, we’ve just got Texas Chainsaw in if you wanna watch it” and thus I arrived home tired and ready for bed but instead sat up and watched the film only to be utterly captivated by it and watching it another 3 times before taking it back! And yes, I did remember to rewind …
… Oh, and I always like to tell people I was born 9 days after its initial theatrical release on 10 October 1974 (It being released 1st October of that very same year) which is both a nice nugget of trivia and a somewhat unfortunate way of making them realise how bloody old I am!
As many 4K releases as this is getting, it’s going to start popping up in happy meals.
Don't eat the meat in that happy meal.
Head cheese burger with a toy of Leatherface. I'd buy.
Lmao I have 3 😅
I just ordered it. I believe there are actually FIVE audio commentaries. Great video!!! 👍👍👍
Never liked the idea of Texas on 4K but I did wonder about this release, thank you.
So happy to hear all the great things about this release. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it pal. I second the sooner rather than later bit. Cheers, Elliot!
Stunning boxset,I can't see this release ever being bettered 👍🏻
Great video matey and thanks for sharing the knowledge on the specs👍
Mines arriving tomorrow! Sunday, it will get its first viewing. Can’t wait to check out the new print! Nice review 👍
Great review. There are 5 commentaries though.
Absolutely loved going through mine. And the book is brilliant.
Wonderful review pal! Glad to share similar thoughts with you on this release. Second Sight just can't be outdone with their releases it seems. Cheers
Can't wait for both my orders to arrive, still waiting for Martin, ordered through Zavvi and now TCM as well.
Thinking about ordering the Changeling from Second Sight.
I’ve stopped ordering from Zavvi since November last year. Absolutely awful company. Nothing ever comes on time, cases are damaged more often than not. And they put their shipping up to £4 (I was a red carpet member, but got a refund after too many delayed pre orders) I use HMV now and it’s free shipping over £20. But, 88 Films, Eureka and Second Sight all do direct to customer, so I order from them too. I got my TCM a week before release and had it reviewed by the 6th of April.
I normally order direct from Second Sight but also waiting on this from Zavvi. They also still have not shipped my Maltese Falcon Steelbook yet.
@@roygalloway688 I honestly hate them. I don’t get why people still order from them.
Brilliant review Ethan. 😎 My copy arrived from Amazon today. I had pre ordered it from Zavvi but gave up waiting for it yesterday 😩
Amazing film and Stellar release!
Hi Elliot, I love your channel and respect your reviews. I ordered limited edition through Second site few months ago when if first went up. Yes, the shipping to USA was a killer to my wallet . Yet, Second Site is one of the best labels out there. I will pay extra to support them..I cannot Wait to see what they do with the Hitcher. I am also thinking on getting Picnic at Hanging Rock. Are you thinking on getting that?
Great review fella - did you notice the typo on the spine of the box - the dot on the i (in Chain Saw) is misaligned. Now how did that sneak past the proof stage?
Cannot wait for The Hitcher from Second Sight.
Hope to get it soon and one of my favourite classic horror movies
I have owned TCM on VHS, DVD and now iTunes HD from Turbine. I think it actually served the movie best on VHS as it seemed much more „real“. TCM is actually not presented in a classic movie fashion (for example there is actually no score).
The HD version I have seen- just like Evil Dead 4K- simply doesn’t hold up to releases of proper 35/70mm releases and more color isn’t what I am actually looking for in TCM. Although if it was originally there, it’s fine.
For me the documentary would be probably the most interesting feature. But I am gonna skip this release and spend some money on stuff I haven’t seen a dozen times.
Still it’s great to see a low budget masterpiece like this given all this treatment.
I have to agree. Remember seeing The Terminator in 35mm with a few scratches, and cigarette burns and I honestly it was IMO the most entertaining way I have ever seen the film. Watching the HD version looks and feels artificial.
Well you are completely right about the colors, from the comparisons I have seen second sight brightened up the contrast and colors more so it looks much more vivid, and they cleaned it it up more. Also something people forget is, this is not approved by the director like the dark sky version. There is a interview with the director on the dark sky and turbine version where he says how hard they worked to restore it in 4k and obtain that gritty look as the movie was intended. That interview is not on the second sight version because they did their additional work, so the interview does not apply the second sight version. So people can say what they want.
The SS and MPI remasters are very similar, except the SS cranked up the color saturation about 5-10% and allowed for more 90%+ gamma curve to blow out so brights are “brighter” so both images are subjective. I prefer the MPI version.
Believe that the documentary you mentioned about the legacy of TCM is also on the new 4K/Blu-ray from Dark Sky
Have you noticed the off centred dot on the i on the spine? 😔
Gorgeous release and packaging that matches their edition of Dawn of the Dead. I so hope that we see an Exorcist box set from Second Sight.
I watched the standard Second Sight 4k TCC last night and it's an incredible remaster, possibly the best I've seen.
The artwork is lush
Is this an unrated/uncut version?
Fun fact, the additional work from second sight is not director approved like the dark sky version. From the comparisons I have seen second sight turned up the contrast and brightened up the colors, and it looks like they cleaned up some of the grain.
Be difficult to get approval from a dead guy.
@@Hallinilla9 The dark sky transfer was approved while he was alive
@@robomnemonic3751 I mean for Second Sight to have gotten approval.
@@Hallinilla9 yeah
Watched this film once a bit over 20 years ago, and while it may have been groundbreaking at release, it did not hold up in the early 2000s.
Hey look at that. I'm the first one to watch your vid! I already bought this but haven't watched the disc yet. I'm excited to do so.
Any idea how I can order this in the U.S.?
Not sure it’s a film I’d want to revisit, a real nasty bit of work, gets inside your head.
Already out of stock on Second Sight!!
They’re getting more in soon.
Does anybody know if and where protective exist for these releases, I have mine but I’m scared to open it unless I have a protective sleeve to put it back into
Best release of 2023 so far!
Glad i skipped the Dark Sky for Second Sight..... Better transfer indeed.
Fun fact the second sight version and their additional work is not approved by the director unlike the dark sky version
@@robomnemonic3751 well the director is dead so it's a bit hard to approve the second sight
@@nocoture I know
@@robomnemonic3751 okay
