ASICS GEL KAYANO 31 REVIEW - MAX CUSHIONED STABILITY UPDATE - EDDBUD
An initial review of the new ASICS GEL KAYANO 31, an update to their ever present stability model which now has a 40mm heel stack!
The KAYANO enters supershoe territory here, with a 42mm stack in my pair and some considerable cushion. Could this be a marathon option for some runners as well as a great trainer?
This is a shoe sent to me from ASICS for review, but they are not paying me to making this video nor will they be watching my video or vetting my views before my valued viewers get to see it.
I comment on the upper, midsole and outsole after my initial runs.

I recently picked up last year's Kayano 30 on sale. It's exactly as you describe. Stable, wide base, excellent for runs where you don't necessarily care about pace but want something comfortable that will feel consistent throughout the run. High quality construction too. Excellent review Edd.

I ran my first marathon in the Kayano 19, back in the day when super shoes were unheard of. And, that was my last pair of Kayanos. Now that I'm a lot older and a tad wiser, it's a buy for me. I'm totally lovin' these batch of cushioned rides from Asics, from the Novablast 4 to the Nimbus 26. All that's missing is the Kayano 31. Feels like a homecoming for me. Thanks for the review!

I used to wear Kayanos exclusively back in the day. Although my stability needs have reduced over time, I would probably still be wearing them if not for the price. I now alternate between Puma Forever Runs and Brooks Glycerin GTS for my long and steady runs. They serve me well and I can generally find them at a sizable discount, which I can't with the Kayanos .

Asics are having an amazing year. They have seriously released consistently pretty damn good shoes this year. The Nimbus 26, the Novablast 4, the Max Trabuco 3, the Magic Speed 4 etc.....and with the MetaSpeed Sky Paris they matched Nike super shoe for super shoe. And there is still the Superblast 2 coming!
Asics is brand of the year imho. With Mizuno as most improved brand of the year (wave rebellion Pro, Neo Vista)

I hope that the outsole of this Gel-Kayano 31 will be more resilient them the rubber that is on my Gel-Nimbus 26. My Nimbus 26 with only 140km ran I can notice lots of wear in the heels and forefoot areas ! The old Gel-Nimbus 25 I had was donated at near 500km ran and was still tick and with grip !

I’m a longtime Asics loyalist, and started wearing the Kayanos at version 16. I stopped buying at 29 because v30 was an absolute lump of a shoe, for me taking away the essence of what it was originally. They were simply massive. It was a really notable change in design. Even the guy in the Asics store said they’d really polarised opinion, saying they’re great if you’re a retiree on their daily walk - but not if you want to run meaningfully. A touch harsh perhaps, but I’ve found the Superblast, for a little more money, to be just as stable, miles lighter and way more flexible. Maybe I’ll go back to the GKs when I’m retired!

looking for a new pair of stability shoes as a daily trainer - currently using the Saucony Guide 15's. Not sure whether to get the Guide 17's or the Kayano 31's, which are significantly more expensive. Will need to try a pair I think - big difference in drop between the two.

Thank you Sir for the commentary. Can this work for underpronators? Had a baseball injury hitting in the batter’s box in college and I severely sprained my ankle. My ankle never healed properly. This was 29 years ago. I am 6’ 3” and weigh 340 pounds, so it will have to withstand my body weight till I shed all the excess weights.
