ASICS GEL KAYANO 31 REVIEW - MAX CUSHIONED STABILITY UPDATE - EDDBUD
An initial review of the new ASICS GEL KAYANO 31, an update to their ever present stability model which now has a 40mm heel stack!
The KAYANO enters supershoe territory here, with a 42mm stack in my pair and some considerable cushion. Could this be a marathon option for some runners as well as a great trainer?
This is a shoe sent to me from ASICS for review, but they are not paying me to making this video nor will they be watching my video or vetting my views before my valued viewers get to see it.
I comment on the upper, midsole and outsole after my initial runs.

I recently picked up last year's Kayano 30 on sale. It's exactly as you describe. Stable, wide base, excellent for runs where you don't necessarily care about pace but want something comfortable that will feel consistent throughout the run. High quality construction too. Excellent review Edd.
Top notch mile masher
Very fair commentary from a runner who doesn’t need the stability element!
I ran my first marathon in the Kayano 19, back in the day when super shoes were unheard of. And, that was my last pair of Kayanos. Now that I'm a lot older and a tad wiser, it's a buy for me. I'm totally lovin' these batch of cushioned rides from Asics, from the Novablast 4 to the Nimbus 26. All that's missing is the Kayano 31. Feels like a homecoming for me. Thanks for the review!
This foam seems to improve over time. Unlike many others!
I used to wear Kayanos exclusively back in the day. Although my stability needs have reduced over time, I would probably still be wearing them if not for the price. I now alternate between Puma Forever Runs and Brooks Glycerin GTS for my long and steady runs. They serve me well and I can generally find them at a sizable discount, which I can't with the Kayanos .
Asics are having an amazing year. They have seriously released consistently pretty damn good shoes this year. The Nimbus 26, the Novablast 4, the Max Trabuco 3, the Magic Speed 4 etc.....and with the MetaSpeed Sky Paris they matched Nike super shoe for super shoe. And there is still the Superblast 2 coming!
Asics is brand of the year imho. With Mizuno as most improved brand of the year (wave rebellion Pro, Neo Vista)
The sky paris are insanely good!
Ok you sold me on this. I’m gonna get this next year when it’s on discount 🤣
Great revue, looking forward to getting the Kayano 31. My old pair of Kayano’s are barely hanging in there.
those look really cool i want to try the kayano 30
It's always good when there are tips for heavy runners. Thank you
No problem!
nice Shirt Budd 10k. good looking shoes too.
Appreciate it!
cracking video Edd
Thanks, I appreciate that 👍🏼👊
I kinda like it !
Gonna need plenty of earth credits to buy me all these shoes !
bro u have the coolest pair of oakley shades 🔥
They are much needed on the sunny earth mornings.
Loved the the Nimbus 25. I wouldn't mind if it was a bit firmer with a higher arch. I'm willing to check this one out if it has the elements above.
Yes similar vibe but a bit more aggressive a drop
Greetings Master Edd!
I hope that the outsole of this Gel-Kayano 31 will be more resilient them the rubber that is on my Gel-Nimbus 26. My Nimbus 26 with only 140km ran I can notice lots of wear in the heels and forefoot areas ! The old Gel-Nimbus 25 I had was donated at near 500km ran and was still tick and with grip !
Let us know Ed about how your Gel-Kayano 31 is doing with the outsole durability for your 100 miles review !
Thanks.
The heel rubber is very tough on this one
Standard comment for the algorithm sir.
Much appreciated
Kayano 28 owner. They have 800+ km and i mostly use them in snow. No real signs of wear. Love the build quality. They get uncomfortable for me beyond 20km.
Always good build on ASICS models
The 30 and 31 are completely different shoes to previous models.
Too expensive for my budget. I had an old version but it was quite aggressive, this one sounds better 👍
I’m a longtime Asics loyalist, and started wearing the Kayanos at version 16. I stopped buying at 29 because v30 was an absolute lump of a shoe, for me taking away the essence of what it was originally. They were simply massive. It was a really notable change in design. Even the guy in the Asics store said they’d really polarised opinion, saying they’re great if you’re a retiree on their daily walk - but not if you want to run meaningfully. A touch harsh perhaps, but I’ve found the Superblast, for a little more money, to be just as stable, miles lighter and way more flexible. Maybe I’ll go back to the GKs when I’m retired!
Good comments, im an asics lover as well but i found the superblast to be big and wide.
I think I’ll be going for the nimbus 26 next
Do you recommend using novablast or nimbus for people who have flat feet? I was thinking of kayano, but many people said it's changed a lot and not as good as before.
@@timethegames6084 I've never owned a pair of Nimbuses, but the Novablasts I would definitely recommend, esp. version 3 if you can get hold of a pair. They can be the training workhouse the Kayanos used to be!
@davidrogers7787 What about novablast 4?
@@timethegames6084 Not quite as snappy as the 3s but also good! The alternative to NB4s = GK29s if you can get hold of them.
Nice 🎉
Like the shirt 😮
If you need to test them out in the rain head down to The Kings Avenue it usually rains down there ☔👍🏻
This is as stable as a three wheeler.
Edd pure gel Bud 😂😂😂😂
Don't ever stop with these
Any fun that can be gleaned is always good
looking for a new pair of stability shoes as a daily trainer - currently using the Saucony Guide 15's. Not sure whether to get the Guide 17's or the Kayano 31's, which are significantly more expensive. Will need to try a pair I think - big difference in drop between the two.
Thank you for the review!
And congratulations on fixing the lights! 😆
Had to repair the cable 🐈⬛
A good description about the new Kayano 31. Like. Have a great day.
Thanks 👍
I have been running in the Brooks adrenaline for years and years. After watching your review of the last kayano, I grabbed a pair without expectation. I was blown away! Lighter, more. Cushioned, and a whole lot of fun to run in! Don't know if I'll go back to the adrenaline anytime soon. Thanks for the great review and as always the swell music recommendations!
Glad they are hitting the spot 👊
Plans for any more live streams?
Very soon
Thank you Sir for the commentary. Can this work for underpronators? Had a baseball injury hitting in the batter’s box in college and I severely sprained my ankle. My ankle never healed properly. This was 29 years ago. I am 6’ 3” and weigh 340 pounds, so it will have to withstand my body weight till I shed all the excess weights.
More built up in the arch side in fairness. It’s very resilient and could work. Maybe try in store if possible
just got my kayano 30 on sale due to this new release, as a causal runner, I prefer getting older models for cheap~
Hi
🥉
Thanks for the photek suggestion
Most welcome 😊
Probably the most stable shoe I have ever put on. Slightly better than the 30.
Is it more stable than the 30
@@philmienus2382 yes. it has a bit more stability in the arch. It’s a bit more snug too as I found the 30 a touch wide.
I tried these on in sports direct yesterday price £179.99 colour was a stunning blue also the fit was true to size loved the feel of the shoe great review as always edd thankyou for your advice.
Glad this helped out!
So Hyped for the new Puma Deviate Nitro 3 review.
Coming soon. When they arrive!
👊🏼🤖‼️
Many thanks
hello
Great review Ed. I would’ve gone for these but for the price. Will likely pick some up when they go down. Went for the Saucony Guide 17 instead which is a banger on my view.
The guide and ride are good options with a little less heft
@@EDDBUD ps do you have any preferred shoe restorer…new kicks have suffered in this wonderful British summer we’re having.
I’m not sure I am asking this correctly but When I went shopping at my local running store the term stability was used to describe a lot of the shoes they were selling. Is the term interchangeable with any running shoe or is there a classification I should be looking for. Hope this makes sense
Usually it means there are bits on the side to stabilize the shoe. Like the Brooks Adrenaline GTS
Some shoes are aimed at people who need more support on the medial side. This is one of them
Elden Ring DLC in 9 days I hope you are prepared 😅
I need to brush up and get good again
Love a bit of photek. Also, that whole genre is good for pace 😂
how long was i gone?
Hard to say
I usually don't need a stability shoe, but I appreciate the Kayano when the ankles feel tired. And I can definitely ride in those while running 4.00 min/km kilometers.
Yes that’s exactly how I found it
Algo. Thanks.
As a stability, shoe wearing pronater, what does my head in is why can't asics do two models. A kayano 31 max cushion easy running shoe and a kayano 31-s being a lighter speed day shoe. I honestly think every stability shoe wearing runner would absolutely buy both models.
🎉😂😢😮
🥇
@@EDDBUDcan I pick your brains.. a friend is after a daily shoe to use in Spain with a £50 budget. I thought velocity nitro 2 but struggling to find his size (10)… Floatride Energy 5 out of stock too.
How do you think it compares to the adrenaline 23 in stability terms? Would it do the same job?
Haven’t tried that brooks shoe
Hey Edd how do these fit in comparison to the nimbus 25/26. They are what I usually were and I've always got a size 9, would a size 9 in the Kayano fit the same????
Similar fit. Go true to size
Please assist, which one is better this Gel Kayano 31 or Novablast 4?
Prefer the blaster
Hi there
Pls, Is there any kayno in 6E wide
Not sure but the standard is wide anyway
Is it good for long distance walking and long standing hours?
Ideal for all of those uses
