  • Join me for some cycling tech and maintenance as I try to modify my Dura Ace 9000 crankset to a smaller inner chain ring to see if I can get a better climbing setup.....boom 53 / 36 crankset is born!
    The 36 tooth chainring I sourced from a Shimano 108 5800 set of chainrings from my Bianchi, and it seems to have been a success.
    I took the bike for a good test on the Gardiner's creek trail which meant lots of shifting on the front mech and it seems to work perfectly. The path is mainly flat but I can tell I have 3-4 gears now that are pretty much perfect for climbing so I am all set for some epic rides in the hills. Bring on summer adventures!

    I've been running the 53/36 "secret" ratio for 3 or 4 years now. Although not "recommended" by Shimano, it has worked flawlessly for thousands of miles. Chain length won't matter because you size your chain off of the big/big gear ratio, so changing the small ring won't matter. Although checking chain length would be great to do when you are re-installing everything...especially if you weren't the one that installed the current chain.

      Thats a pretty big jump there. I know it's only 1 more tooth than what I'm running but it might be asking for trouble. What sort of riding are you doing that you need such extreme range of gearing on your chain rings?

      Might be just easier to get a new chain, perhaps when the chain is due for replacement anyway? If you're putting in a new crankset, a new chain is a comparatively small expense.
      In my opinion, I'd stick to 52/36 anyway. 53 is not necessary for most of us recreational cyclists

    • @melbournecyclingsegments7510
      @melbournecyclingsegments7510  Před 4 lety

      @@williewong5806 First thing you need to figure out is whether or not you can find a chainring that will bolt onto your crankset. For that you need to know the BCD (bolt circle diameter), and then find a 52T chainring with the BCD compatible with your crankset. Looks like for DA 7900 the BCD is 130mm with 5 bolt arms, but I'm not sure it might be 110mm for the compacts. You'll need to do some research there and find if you can even get a compatible 52T chainring. The next thing is Shimano recommends only a certain difference in the number of teeth of the two chainrings. If you go with 34 52 you will be exceeding this recommendation by maybe 2 teeth. What this means is you would be putting more strain on your front derailleur and probably shifting won't be as good. Now with 34 52 I think you will be ok, just shift a bit more carefully and avoid cross-chaining too much. So in summary, if you can find a 52t with compatible BCD I think it will work OK. 7900 is getting pretty old though, perhaps worth looking out for a second hand 36/52 complete crankset and just swapping over

    • @melbournecyclingsegments7510
      @melbournecyclingsegments7510  Před 3 lety

      Could be. Just remember if you deviate from shimano recommendations the chain rings don't line up properly between chainrings and you can drop a chain. If you half shit down from big ring and turn cranks by hand you will see if the chain links line up with the teeth properly. With my 53/36 they don't line up so I shift carefully

I am pretty sure your 6800 ultegra has a 110 BCD so just buy 50 34 set of chain rings which have the same BCD and swap them over.
