  • Breath of the Wild's four champions, Mipha, Daruk, Urbosa, and Revali all possess incredibly useful powers that can aid Link in his quest. There's only one question though: how did they get those powers? Were they born with them, or something else entirely? Join me to figure this Zelda theory out!

According to the king's diary, the divine beasts were discovered after Zelda was born, but before the queen died, which was when Zelda was 6. Mipha's diary says that they discovered Vah Ruta after she met Link when he was 4. So yeah, she was healing Link around 2 years BEFORE they discovered Vah Ruta. But she also commented that "it must have been [Link's] first time seeing healing magic", suggesting that healing magic was not unheard of among Zora. So she likely wasn't the only one who could do it.

Revali developed and eventually perfected his Revali's Gale on his own through training, before he even got to see his divine beast, as we see during the cutscene when Zelda goes to request he become a champion. Mipha has been able to heal ever since she was a child according to her conversation with Link atop Vah Ruta. Daruk is shown using Daruk's protection before he gets to see the divine beast, during the scene when Zelda requests that he become a champion, and his proficiency with it as well as their dialogue implies that it's an ability he's always had. And Urbosa is a badass. She definitely knew how to use Urbosa Fury all along and you'll never convince me otherwise

The only problem with the theory regarding this is the activation time. So lets alter it a bit since signs of ganon were clear this means that hes coming the game states ganon was sealed 10000 years ago so what if they activated because the sheikah tech detected movement of malice . . . or conversely theyre genetic and its merely coincidence that they unlucked it also knowing about the divine beast has nothing to do with being chosen i mean until link is wielded the master sword he had no idea he was the hero but he was the hero the whole time. Personally i believe that their genetic this is what would make the most since as they trained these abilities on there own it makes no since for them to claim it as they own if it just showed up one day. . .

    @petery6432 Před 3 lety +297

One issue is that in the case of Revali's gale, Revali says "I have made an art of creating an updraft that allows me to soar". This implies that he trained himself to make it work, and the DLC cutscene shows that. He also says that it's "A masterpiece of aerial technics, even among the Rito". This implies that the ability was something that was well known about, but simply something that only the elite and well-trained flyers could be able to use properly. I doubt it would be talked about like that if it was something simply made by the Sheikah.
Or on the other hand, maybe Revali is just being Revali and trying to act like he earned the ability though hard work and not destiny like Link. I think you would come to that conclusion knowing your feelings on Revali.

This also means that somehow Revali knew this skill was able to be learned in order to train. Revali also most likely named it after himself since no one at the time had mastered it, which still brings up the point of where did he learn that he was even capable of doing this. Then comes Yunobo, who I doubt trained in order to be able to use his skill. From what I can gather years, as Zelda apparently was experimenting and researching some of the Sheika tech as a kid for at least what seems like a few years. And likely the tech had been excavated at least some while before that, putting the supposed event that could have granted the abilities (the digging up of the Divine Beasts awakening them from slumber) well before any scenes we see with the champions.

In relation to Mipha, she had her powers, long before the Divine Beast were excavated. At some point Hylians came to Zora's domain along with a 4 year old Link. Mipha says in her diary that she healed Link's wounds with her magic. (For context, excevation for the Divine Beast started when Zelda was 7, since it is said that the fortune teller told the King that the Calamity was soon approaching and that the something would happen to the Queen).
Mipha had her abilities long before Vah Ruta was found, she states that it was found before Link became the knight who welds the master sword (if this goes with my theory of time placement, this is after the Battle of Hyrule Field in AoC). She was asked to pilot Vah Ruta by Zelda sometime after that interaction with Link.
Mipha's powers have been with her probably since birth and I think this is due to something found in the History of the Zora.
Princess Ruto is a far descendent from the Royalty of the Zora, who's to say that she never had a kid, seeing as how Zora age less then Hylians and although it is implied she is 10 in the past and 17 in the future, it doesn't really match with what we know of the Zora in BoTW. From the quest: special delivery, what appears to be a Zora child is in a relationship with a Hylian man, but it is revealed that she is of age to be in a relationship. Perhaps every Champion is a descendent from a sage of long ago. We know that Darunia had a son that he named Link, and we don't know if Nabooru had any children. There are countless Sages who could have had passed on their divine powers, that later could've re-emerged in their descendents years later.
As to the reason the Blight Ganons can use the Champion's powers is due to how they came to be. The Blights are a combination of malice, as well as Sheikah technology. After malice infected the Beasts, the Blights came into existence. Seeing as how the Champions and Divine Beast have some sort of connection, perhaps the Blights "download" data from the Divine as well as from the Champions. For instance Waterblight Ganon may have Mipha's spear, that's pretty much as far as the connection between them goes. When you get to the second stage of the battle, it causes the water level to rise using what appears to be magic. But throughout that second stage of the fight, it uses that same "magic" to create Sheikah ice blocks, much like the ones Link can make when using the Sheikah slate. Mipha hasn't been seen being able to make ice on her own, but Divine Beast Vah Ruta has. It is the whole gimmick before you even enter the Divine Beast. I believe that some of the Blights were able to copy the Champion's powers from data within the Divine Beast, while others were able to copy things the Divine Beast could do. We know that Vah Ruta can create ice and that Vah Naboris can create lighting, which is where those Blights get their abilities. We don't know if Vah Medoh can create winds and we don't know if Vah Rudania can create fire. I think that two of the Blights took things that the Champions can do (Fireblight and Windblight) while two others took things the Divine Beasts can do (Waterblight and Thunderblight)

    The ending sentence is interesting
"And keep in mind, that most magic is just technology, that hasn't been explained yet."
Never thought of breath of the wilds magic as unexplained technology ... more like unexplained technology to access magic.
Technology is an attemped to utilise natural phenomena to ones benefits and magic is one of these phenomenon.
So why should everything be created beforhand? Sure the old technology is quite advanced but the laws by which this is created shouldn't have changed, right? So it could be done again.
I think the abilities of the four champions are born by desire, like classic magic comes from. It seems to me that most things in breath of the wild have to do with desire of the people and what they want. Daruk desired protection, Revali wants to stand at the top, Mipha wanted to help these she loves and Urbosa wants to strik down all her foes, regardless of where they stand and Zelda also unlocks her ability with desire. If you think about it, even malice is some form of desire. The triforce itself is described as something that fulfills any wish of these that touch it.
Anyway, especially in Revalis case, his dairy depicts it as him creating the ability not just learning how to use it.
Some more things. It's not like the abilities are named after the ones who "created" them but after the ones who gave them to link personally. Also a bit lackluster but the smybols of the abilitie orbs are porbably tied to game design so you as the player see where you got it. Especially when you mention the transfer. The orbs don't show any symbol like the ones of the monks.
Of course any champion could be created by some sort of long forgotten process that would spread some predisposition inside the races and then construct machines so they react to a certain level of this exact abillity. Not to mention, reincarnation, souls and that the world of Zelda is contructed by sentient beings and so should follow some sort of tendency. The Question is how much free will do concede to the inhabitants of this world?
And btw :) what about Links ability to focus really hard/stop time for himself? I believe even even daruk mentioned it in his journal "The little guy is also incredibly strong! He said sometimes when he focuses, it feels like time slows down." NintendoBlackCrisis
mentioned it once before in an video czcams.com/video/G8dcEcd88So/video.html

Revali is the best Champion! He is skilled and praised, and while he is proud in public, as well as the refusal to allow someone to be better, yet he feels unworthy and he is constantly pushing himself harder, trying to prove himself.
Also, the spirit orbs are not shiekah tech, but just a shred of someone's spirit to be housed in someone else's body. The powers are simply the shred of the respective champion's spirit that includes their power. Also, the icon having the divine beast is just an artistic choice because they are symbols to the player that they have beat that divine beast, similar to the icons on the loading screen. It also fits better with the art style of the tapestry, which the player (or at least I) associates with the great calamity. I do agree with your blight theory, in fact, I saw that theory almost a year ago from a small CZcams asking how the champions were defeated as each of their respective powers would have almost ensured that at least one survived, and the answer they came to was that, when Ganon sent malice to the beasts, it enveloped the champions (and Daruk's protection didn't save him as malice attacks aren't effected by that) then took control of their bodies in the same way it controls the cursed skulls to take control of the divine beasts.
