I liked this new way of doing the videos and love how interesting this is getting!!!
Agreed. As a developer myself, the more detail about your design decisions the better. Really fascinating work. Keep it up, I appreciate it.
6:21. Oh my God! It's Bob Ross! Does that mean the trees are "Happy Little Trees"?
Jeez, the atmospherics and art style are so crisp! I would end up spending most of my time Just following the sunrise
I think one of the things that is so impressive is that it is all correctly simulated which makes it look so realistic
@@williamrose3413 Exactly! It's not trying to be anything more than what's out your window, albeit with 40% more hexagon
Ha. I was thinking as I was watching the video “how does he get anything done? I’d just watch the day and night cycle all the time”
This is literally what every game looks like now. Looks like 90% of other unity games.
@@daminalspal Eh, maybe on the surface effects, but there's been a lot of care taken in the sky and water. It's a lot harder than it looks to get it right, regardless of engine
Idea: just for fun, you should be able to right click a sapien, and choose a “spectate” icon. And when spectating, you’ll see whatever the sapen sees
Also would be very cool for vr
Can’t wait for this to be complete. There’s a lot of unique things that you have added to this game, keep up the good work.
The new format is great, hope you're able to keep on using it
Honestly, pretty neutral on the new format, I enjoyed seeing how you did things but also enjoyed the more put-togetherness of the previous format. Now for the game, as I was watching I got to wondering, what if the crop growth cycle was partially based on randomness? for example, in most gams crops have a set growth cycle and if you plant a bunch of them in a row, you can watch them mature in exactly the order you planted them. However, in real life every plant is different and some grow faster or slower than others. I think it would be interesting if there was a standard distribution style randomness for plant growth with some trees growing in 3 seasons and some growing in 5, with the average being 4. Anyways, I love the series and really appreciate the work you put into it. :)
And maybe some dying too. That's what happens to things I plant
I was thinking of plant growth or fruit production depending on the area type as well so that a further decision has to be made into which areas to expand to
And also having to plant particular plants in particular seasons?
Happy 40th devblog!
This is such a unique game and I'm excited to watch its development!
I'm loving the new format. Do what you are more comfortable with though!
Like the new video format, feels like we're in the process with you. I kept imagining spongebob segways like "2 hours later..." haha
I loved this new format, you portrayed your way of thinking about adding new mechanics to the game and then you showed what you came up with. It felt like I was there while u were developing the game without having to see the tedious coding and detail that other devs put inside their Dev logs. I'd love to see more.
Do whatever helps you A) make the game and B) post videos more frequently. Been really enjoying the series and it's fun to hear your process.
cool idea maybe add bees around trees, so it maybe randomly add fertility so more apples grow. Also fertility areas on the ground so apples can not be planted everywhere. Maybe your tribe finds an appletree and could add some trees around it after the initial harvest. Fuits should also start to rott when winter draws near. So storing stuff to prevent rotting for maybe a year would help the effort. different levels of storage could make some depth for playing more to sorta get a feeling how get the feeding of the tribe started. like nothing->storage pit-> boxes or barrels -> cold cellar room-> ..magic..->fridge :D I hope you get the Idea. It maybe all finally conclude to the idea to have like specialised groups of people to get the next tech in a lifeaspect as like planting or storaging. The longer they work for projects the better they get and unlock stuff as a subset of trained villagers. Trained vilagers will know how to build a certain building. It will sometimes also take more then one villager to fullfill one job.
The word you were looking for is agriculture :P
Or agronomy
I like this way of video making. It takes the viewer on a journey through the process and we can see what you're working on and how the idea develops.
I love the new way of videos because there longer and more in-depth on what’s happening
I prefer this format more, especially since I'm working on my own game and I love to see how other game designers think about gameplay elements as they implement them, from the most mundane to the most challenging.
I absolutely love the apple picking animation. It looks like the guy is worshipping the tree and then the tree gives him an apple for his faithful worshipping 😂
I think I prefer this style of video. It's interesting to hear the plan beforehand, and then what you did (or if you ended up doing something else for whatever reason).
Love these devlogs, can't wait for the next one.
"obviously these icons are placeholders"
*looks better than any icon ive ever made*
Doesn't matter which video format you utilize; I enjoy everything you make
Was pretty randomly brought to some of your older dev logs a few weeks ago as I was picking up blender and godot again. Really enjoyed them. Haven’t watched for a bit, but saw this one, and it’s definitely a better format. It’s so helpful to actually experience your thoughts, pause, results, and what’s going to be next as a creator. Thanks for sharing your work and experiences. Very much looking forward to the rest of the journey. I put notifications on for your videos.
This is amazing, i love these videos so much, keep going!
The earth sky was so pretty and recognisable :( was impressed that it wasn't just random.
Love the new video format
just binged the whole playlist. I'm excited to see where this goes, watching the playlist, and some other channels, has given me some encouragement to start coding, I'm still new to programming so I get pretty excited imagining what I could end up making, if I start working hard at learning.
I liked the previous format, and it's also lesser work for you while developing :))
I don't know about birch trees, but aspens tend to spread by their root systems, and new trunks pop up from those. Some of the largest single organisms in the world are actually multi-acre stands of aspens that look like thousands of trees from above ground, but which are all genetically identical and connected by an extensive root network. So maybe it's super realistic to be able to plant those. But also maybe that's hair-splitting at too fine a level for a game...
OH!
I alway forget about this serie but I can never stop watching it!
I love this new format of video it gives a way better prespective of the process to create this amazing game and I now apreciate the amount of work you put into this much more this is awesome keep up the good work
Both video styles are fine with me. As long as you are detailing the why’s and how’s of what you are doing and not only present the results.
I enjoy this version of your devlogs.
You seriously doing amazing with that building menu, it looks like planet coaster and that's just perfect.
I kind of like watching your videos as you go along.
This way of making videos makes it easier to get feedback so I would say keep it up
Great video! I think I prefer the old format, an overall summary of everything you have done is a little more interesting imo, hindsight is 20/20 after all. Especially if the new vids are more work for you.
Damn you're smashing it!
I love that you added seasons! Not too many games have that feature.
I love this series so much! It makes me excited about working on my own game again
Awesome video, i did myself a lot tents with branch in my childhood but i never make in the way that thick part is in the air and thin part on the ground. Rotate branch to have thick part on ground and thin part of branch to collide with mirroring side of the tent :) cheers
Love the dedication to development and how you are genuinely interested in development for what seems like fun!
My hope is that this game will become insanely popular and I’ll be able to say I was one of the first people to play it
Don't forget to add self propagation of trees in, if the fruit is not eaten then make the fruit fall off and have random percent changes of new trees spawning nearby. Or even if eaten if your dudes take a poo somewhere....
I'm so excited to play this game dude!
after the last video, i'm actually interested on the game now, love your videos
This new format is amazing! Keep doing it!
Love both ways! I'd make this one appear every 2-3 videos so it doesn't become your main job ;)
I like the new format! It's cool to see the process
Planting functionality looks nice. Can't wait to get to play this game.
Don't know about the level of realism you are going for here but in real life apple grown from the seed will be a wild apple that grows small sour apples. Orchard apple would need to be added from a cutting.
Something the UI is lacking is a back button, Or a functionality to go backwards in the UI without closing it completely. I love the new format btw
This was a really cool way of doing it 🙂👍 Great work ☺️
I like this format Dave!
Hey Dave, great progress ! I like the new format, if it's easier for you then stick with it. I don't mind either way really, whatever keeps you making these videos - I love seeing your progress on Sapiens
I just want to say, I really like this new format!
Don't get me wrong, I liked the 'summary' videos, but I also like those more in-depth videos.
Awesome! It's hard having episodes be weeks apart, I'm always keen to see progress
Kia ora from Dunedin :)
My god.. this is gonna be the best game ever made
I know it is probably on your to do list and that you have to do things in a logical order, but I would love to see weather soon!
Still, don't listen to me and please, do as you wish ;)
I believe the plan is for the weather being only a beautiful effect. But I just had an idea about how the weather could affect gameplay. It could be implemented with the same mechanic as seasons, but adding a modifier, a random element to them. Like, if this year was specially rainy, you can switch the "regular spring" for a "wet spring", that affects the availability of resources. In the forest it could be hard to find dry firewood and the fallen branches could decompose. In the desert, more plants would flower and grow. It's a nice idea to add more variety!
I like this approach.
really well made apple tree growing maybe need at lees 1 more growing stage between sapling and full grown tree and this choosing stuff tab looks much better really good job at this game step by step starting looking really lovely and awesome
Im liking the apple tree sapling look, its nice. Also i think that this new format of making videos is good, but if it puts too much pressure on you, you can go back to the original way. As long as your comfortable, ill watch your videos either way!
Not a single dislike on the video; god bless your fan base
Looks great!
You should do a style like thin matrix where he shows the code in like a time lapse when working on something
interesting format.
with the other one everything is shiny and done, but with this i think there is a bit more of an immediate feel.
The new format was great! One thing that I'd suggest from my armchair developer position is that more growth states for the saplings would be really cool. Instead of having it pop into existence as a sapling, and then pop into a full tree, maybe each season it grows a little bigger, from nothing into a full tree. Obviously that's a lot more work for you to do, but I think it would fit really well with the style of the game you've got going so far. Either way, can't wait to see what you do next!
I think that would ease up the whole process of creating models for each season, for example you plant a seed in winter, it sprouts in spring and so on. But if you plant it in, let's say summer, the seed will hold on until spring to sprout. All I'm saying is to have just one model per season until the tree has fully grown.
Yeah it would be weird to see your autumn tree become fully grown in the winter.
It would be pretty interesting if your moon/s cycles affect the brightness of each night - on a new moon you’ll have a very dark night with much brighter stars
zoom out to us being in a simulation and an old and frail dave smiling at his screen
Looks Great
You should use the opportunity to plant 20M trees in your game now.
I like this style of video but I think whatever is more comfortable/efficient for you should be the priority.
I love your work
I like both formats, so w/e one you wanna do is fine.
New format = epic format
Love it
are you planning on adding some kind of grid / snapping option for buildings? that may be a popular feature.
I think the pentagons (hexagons?) are for that.
With small objects like seeds, could it be an outcome to have individuals 'find' them automatically over time while doing stuff, like they would find a seed while getting branches and stick it in their pocket. They could have it on their person and could put it in a structure, a little pouch or something so everyone can use it. That way you do not need to make tiny seeds in the world.
I'm enjoying the the look of the game so far..
Hey Dave, would you consider implementing a variance in the tree size and some kind of tree influencing by the people such as fertilization of the land or labour (pruning) that would affect its final size or yield?
For the highlighting on the floor tiles when placing objects, would it look better if the highlight always rendered on top of everything, including grass and other objects.
You make your videos however you most enjoy doing them guy!
13:00 Any reason the hut branches are the way they are?
i like this way of doing the videos more. im very interested in the thoughts and why you made it the way you did it.
This is just a small suggestion but maybe make the trees when placed have random directions, you will still be able to rotate but if the directions are random it will make it look more organic instead of copy-pasted trees.
The unbuilt thatch roofs look so beautiful! Can we build something like it?
very impressive
Planting 20 million trees in sapiens
About being able to plant trees and planing how they turn out. I think this is a really good feature for people that take there time to make the world look unique and how they want. But I personally think that it takes away a little bit of the games output, the little surprise factor a game offers a player. Also image a casual gamer that checks out the game and just plants a bunch of threes. For him they will all face in the same direction, making the gaming experience supconsciously a bit worse.
I like both formats
How do they get the materials for the thatch? I was thinking that grass could dry out during the summer or even autumn and the Sapiens could harvest it using a primitive scythe. Or perhaps they can harvest grass year round and dry it out themselves in a storage building?
I think the problem with left/right click might be because they both open a menu, making the functionality too similar might wire your brain to not really notice the differences. One thing you might be able to do is if you have to hold left click for as long as the wheel is up and then release on the item you want to select might fix the issue. (kind of like pings in league). Alternatively you could make one of the two buttons not open up a menu i dont know how that would work though. (another problem might be because you still have to click left to do the final selection of the build in both menus that will also wire with your head.
the more videos the better!
Maybe the right-click should be the menu / god things, but the left-click would be (in future) interactions with the world / tribe / etc
I'm here for the ride. This is your job to make the game so if the videos get in the way then no I don't support it. If you can get the same amount of work done with the new video type then yes keep it going.
Love the new the new style of video
Also u got me back into game design gonna give unity a shot going though the lessons started yesterday
End goal a vr game I guess
Try Godot instead of Unity. Lightweight, open source, free, and simpler.
@@davidt01 I just like unity I've used it in the past and I was ok with it never had a serious project to push my boundaries and besides I'm already back in full swing but I'll keep it in mind if I ever need to do some lighter work
Now plant 20 million trees
Good progress!
I think the tree growth should be way slower. Like, wait an year from seed to sapling, then 5 years from sapling to mature tree. Or you could add one more intermediate stage, that could grow a smaller quantity of fruits than a mature tree. In real life a tree can take 15 years to fruit when planted from the seed, it's a slow process. It'll also be good for game balance.
Regarding the video, I liked the previous format better. A section about the planning would be nice, like you did at the start of this video. Then you could say what went along the plan, what new problems appeared and what you had to improvise. But showing like, "today I want to do this" and then "ok, that's what I've done today" is not as interesting.
I cannot remember if you have commented on this topic before. Will there be technological advancement in terms of the stone age, then bronze, iron, and final modernish technology?
Hi Dave, I've been following for a while but I'm still not clear on how the game will play.
Will there be goals, what is the primary/secondary/tirtiary gameplay going to be?
Is it possible to make the seasonal variations procedural? If so, it could save a lot of time.
Hey Dave,I have a question what platforms do you plan to release the game on?
You should work on heat, and cold areas like that affect the people example a baby gets left in a crib in a cold tent like structure then it has a 75% chance of dieng before the mom gets back within 10 minutes.
Motive to actually build houses instead of having people surrounded by a campfire all the time.
