  • Wishlist now on Steam! Link is below.
    With a continued focus on gameplay, this week I worked on the relationship system, and the re-addition of pregnancy and sapien life stages. As a result it is now finally possible to actually grow your tribe and create more sapiens. This is enough of a goal that the game is actually fun to play now, and it marks the beginning of the transition to playtest driven development.
    In Sapiens, evolve your primitive hunter gatherers through thousands of years of technological advancement. Feed, protect and grow your tribe, build towns and industry, and advance through the ages in this first person civilization building god game for PC. Play with your friends in co-operative or competitive multiplayer, all on a procedurally generated planet larger than Earth.

    It seems like your Sapiens could use a few "environmental" dangers that can stunt the growth of the tribe. Storms that destroy fruit-bearing trees, predators that attack tribe members that wander too far from the rest of the tribe when looking for resources, dry seasons that impact how much fruit is grown. Perhaps harvested fruit should have a limited life-span in which it remains edible, after one season of storage, a piece of fruit could become rotten. I have wish-listed Sapiens for a while now and would love to become an early-access playtester!

    I think that the relationship system could give an interesting motivation to interact with neighbouring tribes, where young people want to find partners they are not so closely related to. Looking forward to see how this shapes up over the months ahead. Also liking the new devlog approach.

  • @faisalmasood-medicalstuden1936

    I've been watching this series for a while, and I gotta say the game is progressing along really well! I really like the gameplay style video that shows how you’ve been developing the core mechanics of the game. I had a few quick thoughts.
    Would be really cool if the sapiens had their own traits like vision, strength, loyalty, etc. Some of these traits could be genetic and they could also change over time in response to the activities that they normally engage in. Kind of like a level-up system. This could add good variation in the game and add personalization and specialization to each one of your sapiens.
    You mentioned adding intricacies to the relationship roles. I like the idea of a respect / loyalty aspect to a relationship. The sapien that is most respected by the largest number of peer sapiens could become the tribe leader. If a certain sect of the population is mutually dissatisfied with the current chief, they can break away from their current tribe and start a new one or join a different one.
    Just a few random thoughts. Cheers!

    The game is taking shape on every progress you've reached and looking awesome! It reminds me about an old game I use to play called " Black & White ". I love how the game has some great visuals and shaders. Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see this game reach it's final stage or at least beta stage and have hands on it! Am sure my daughter and I will have a blast together playing it. We spend time playing Minecraft so this game will take us into another wonderful journey and fun!

    The movement of the people in the tribe looks very mechanical which I think could be related to them always keeping their back straight. I don't know how hard that would be to add but I fell like that would help. Also if the parents have a child, have the children group up and run around together playing with a ball or something, I feel like that would really add a child dynamic besides the smaller size.

    The portraits would look so much better if they were also lit from a warm light in the lower left. Keep the stark light from the upper right, but put them next to a bright fire and the faces won't look so dark and shapeless.

  • @MyriadSkies
    @MyriadSkies Před 4 lety +5

    It's looking better and better by the update! I like your design approach in many areas, going for a flexible, broad system, rather than a rigid, granular one. For example how you made families sort of just, grow based on relationships, rather than "MAN AND WOMAN MAKE BABY, THEY ARE NUCLEAR FAMILY UNIT" =P. (Especially considering that many tribal cultures had a large variety of complex relationships and family structures that's just not represented very well in most games) These relationships might also affect how skills are passed down.
    So you could have a child with a grandparent or uncle or perhaps even a niece who will teach them a new skill =). There's a lot of potential with this! Looking forward to seeing more. The village, though simple looks great too!

  • @16m49x3
    @16m49x3 Před 4 lety +4

    Should the relationships develop as they do positive interactions with each other?
    Like if someone helps you build something, or someone eat together with you, or if someone gives you food. Or make a new tool for you.
    Then the childs relationship with it's mother will kind of naturally get good as the mother interacts with her child. And the more helpful a sapien is, the more popular he will be, and the more likely he will pass on his genes.

    This looks really neat with the family/relationship system, the idea of a narrative you can create with a missing parental figure is a nice touch.
    Could be a much later thing to add, but it would be neat to have like a Sapien family tree chart thing so you could see the descendants of the Sapiens and how that pans out over the course of the game. Could be integrated in such a way that you can click on a Sapien in the tree and it could highlight the other Sapeins and the relationship they had with others at the current point in time of game or their previous relations if say they are deceased.

      it all comes down to experience. When you're trying to learn something, initially it looks impossible, eventually it feels more achievable, and at a certain point you no longer understand why you even had trouble with it to begin with. Then you learn things on top of that and at some point you're a monster capable of achieving really cool things in really short amounts of time. I also find it pretty impressive, seeing someone with so much experience work

    Exciting to see a transition from the world + terrain required to support the gameplay, to the gameplay itself! Also I think you're taking the right approach regarding the connection between relationships and reproduction, relationship scores and amount of contact are nice organic indicators for reproduction. I'd take it a step deeper personally, and have a hidden 'intimacy' score derived from some interplay of static sapien compatibility and relationship score, that represents percent chance of reproduction at any given time. Also it would be cool if the amount a child's relationships are imprinted from parents could be related to their contact with that parent or something. Anyway this is getting really cool!

  • @NaughtyKlaus
    @NaughtyKlaus Před 4 lety

    Balancing ideas:
    1. You could limit how much food is able to be harvested before it’s yield is decreased, eventually causing a plant to be a waste of space and time. Chopping the tree frees up space.
    2. Pillaging / wars. Nearby villages may pillage resources. Completely desperate villages may disband. Villagers of disbanded villages will seek out random villages, children will follow mothers. Disbanded villages become ruins, sites for other villages to finish pillaging, OR other disbanded village citizens may adopt a ruin.

    I think that doing a little animation when a female and male decide to have a kid would make the players happier. When I played Virtual Villagers, I found the "love hut" very amusing and of course found it important to know who the father was and maybe even have some control over who I bred. It doesn't have to be anything fancy - just maybe disappearing into a tent, some hearts and then the female walks out pregnant.
    Once again, even though Virtual Villagers didn't give their people much personality, I got attached to some of them via assigning them certain skills, "jobs" etc, their relationships and what they looked like (more variation, also in clothing, made each villager more unique). Certain aspects of your game reminds me of it, so maybe you could look into what the players of these games liked and disliked for possible ideas :)
    Edit: also, family trees and burial rituals/grounds for when sapiens die, would be cool and useful :)

    If you're looking for ways to have people leave the tribe then one option is to essentially have ostracising, so if a sapien has low relationship value(s) for everyone else in the tribe then they leave. It does sort of depend on you having relationships change over time somehow which I'm not sure if you are planning, but could be cool. Keep up the good work :)

    Good stuff as always. Really enjoy watching your progress. Counter to food abundance is threat/risk/reward. Wildlife and difficult/dangerous terrain that slows things down. Also curious if you'll be adding a temperament attribute. Mixing leadership with temperament can then be applied to how the entire tribe acts and handles encounters with other tribes and situations. If leadership in the tribe is aggressive, then the tribe leans more aggressive and people in the tribe grow more aggressive with age. Since kids can come with a variety of temperaments, you can sway tribe behavior subtly over time. Assuming the tribe interactions will come into play at some point, yeah?

    If I am not mistaken, there have existed tribes of people (and still do) that believed that if a woman would mate with a few men then every man she had been with was the cilds father. This point of view is likey to make it so that every child is much safer and pretty much guarranteed to learn a handfull of important skills from their fathers.
    So by having this system you talked about, you have basically made each community in the game follow that believe ;) or at least I like to look at it that way haha, a bit of a plausable lore, or background information :)

I think that later on in the game when the tribe gets much larger it would take way to much time having to build 100 houses, and I think being able to save things you built would help a lot with that.

Perhaps it's some combination of personality traits for each Sapien (similar to the Sims) and the 'usefulness' of the Sapien to the tribe - for example, a Sapien with a Friendly personality trait and lots of skills is going to be more popular (aka build relationships faster) than one that's Standoffish and doesn't have a lot of skills...?

    On making food supply more difficult 11:00... What about letting the food rot over time so you can't store it forever. Perhaps letting other creatures (mice, deers or rabbits) steal the food.

    You could make that you cant plant apple trees either as often or too close nearby . Or that an apple tree can only produce a set amount of apples before it dies.
    Just an Idea!

    I have a suggestion for your food problem: in general animals cant eat the same food every single day and eat nothing else, they need variety for nutrients. So is it possible to make them less likely to eat the apples over time? Also can you make the apples themselves rot over time?

    Are you going to be making the different trees segregated? Because right now it seems like all the trees are just randomly placed among each other which isn’t super natural. PS love to watch you work on this cool game!

    will there be an upper limit? I mean if the tribes keep growing, there'll theoretically be a bunch of people living in a huge town one day?
