Finally the game has gone out to the very first few testers, and it's great to be getting some feedback. I've been working a lot on tidying up all of the underlying systems and UI, and in this video I show a bunch of work that's been done over the past couple of months, from storage area routes and the discovery tech tree, to keyboard bindings and bug reporting.
In Sapiens, evolve your primitive hunter gatherers through thousands of years of technological advancement. Feed, protect and grow your tribe, build towns and industry, and advance through the ages in this first person civilization building god game for PC. Play with your friends in co-operative or competitive multiplayer, all on a procedurally generated planet larger than Earth.

this really is amazing progression. this game's gonna be popular as hell after release date
I hope it is! It deserves it.
When you zoom to the notification, maybe implement an undo or go back button. The player might wanna quickly check on the notification in person and go back but might've been far away
Would be cool if you zoom in, and can press a button to actually travel there. Otherwise you can just go to your previous point when you hit [ESC] or something like that.
I'm waiting for the emotes, vehicle skins, and cat girls... Actually hold on, I've been drinking but realized the potential of dogs in a game like this. They may start out as wolves that pose a threat, but could be tamed somehow. That's definitely down the road, but it could be cool
Crazy how I remember seeing the “4 years of indie development” video on this game 2 years ago and to see the progress you’ve made is amazing!!!
Yea
i like these trees a lot more than old ones. they're way less "unity game" looking and are pretty fun to look at.
ouch, Unity is the main engine I use 😒
@@Broockle unity is a ver good all around engine depending on what type of game you are going to do.
@@Broockle lol nothings wrong with using unity. I use it too! There's just a lot of games with trees that look like the old ones because they're the easiest sort of trees to make.
@@capnfapn
still felt like u were using it as a derogatory term tho ;D
@@Broockle he was, he just tried backing out
I'm not so crazy about the naming convention of the Sapiens.
I should disclaim that I am not fluent in Toki Pona, but I have a solid grasp on it's vocabulary and basic rules.
I love that you're using Toki Pona, but I find it weird that they're named just random words
Seeing people named Reptile, White or Person doesn't seem right,
And sure, only people who know Toki Pona would notice or care, but I think this would be an opportunity to include a more detailed and rich naming convention.
I have two ideas
1) Toki Pon-ize a list of names and use those: Easily the easiest of the two, just take a list of names and convert them to fit the rules and conventions of Toki Pona (also probably add the word Jan in front of the name to signify that that's their name).
2) Go with the a descriptive system: This is more difficult, but I think would fit more with the game. Many polynesian and native American cultures use names that are very descriptive and literal (E.G the chief of the Hunkpapa Sitting Bull (Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake) or Hawaiian queen Liliʻuokalani (Literally meaning scorching pain of the heavens).
Names could either be more simple like Noun-Adjective (Say jan Akesi Walo (White-Lizard)) or much more descriptive (I can't think of a good example off the top of my head).
Anyways, that's just my two-cents. You already got a ton on your plate so I think changing the name convention would be the least of your worries.
I hope you like the idea at least.
This is honestly marvelous. Im sure loreheads WOULD LOVE this kind of change
100% this! Writing some function that generates possible names wouldn't probably be that hard, also it would greatly increase the list of possible names.
UI: Looking fantastic.
Tech Tree: Perfect.
I love the idea of you pottering about on this project while being able to spend time with your family. I think a lot of devs & others, like me initially, will have the knee jerk reaction: "He needs project management! He's too easily distracted! etc."....but hey: If you get this out within 2021 (*or within your timeframe), then you've made something amazing while having a lovely lifestyle and without this project becoming 'work' or losing passion in it.
Anyway, this is a lovely project from a lovely person, and I'm glad it exists. I think that this is (hopefully) a good model of the future of work for everyone... maybe not this century, but the next.
On steam page, release is slated for early 2022.
Imagine they build a sky scraper .... they will place each stone !
Can't wait for this to come out. Would be nice to see streamers play the alpha.
Don't know if you have spoken about it, but I would love this to see multiplayer with like 128 players or something in one world who can interact and trade resources eventually or maybe even defence and attacking in a primitive way
That sounds like it would take a lot of work.
I think that's his plans. It's already multiplayer.
Yeah it's already mutliplayer ready from the start.
It'd be nice to have an age of empires-style game
That's kind of his plan already.
The UI updates look phenomenal, Dave! I'm really looking forward to seeing how the tech tree and overall gameplay progression evolves towards full release. Can't wait to experience this game firsthand!
DUDE I LITERALLY WONDERED YESTERDAY WHERE YOU WERE
And I literally a couple of hours ago posted a comment on the previous devlog wondering where he was! LOL!
if you join the discord you can get active updates
I saw your channel from the "4 years of Indie Dev" vid years ago. Can't believe you are still goin strong on this. It looks fantastic.
The new trees look excellent. Such a beautiful game.
Yea same
For advancing houses you can go for insulation and quality. Lower insulation houses can need more fuels when highers less. If there is no fuel in the cold weather they can either leave the tribe or it can increase the chance of getting diseases. Quality can affect their happiness. I think happiness is a great challenge. But since in the start thing will difficult you need to give them a bit of low expectation bonus.
When I was younger, (Currently 14) I played the hell out of the blockheads. Looking forward to this!
This impresses me more and more every time I see it. This really is exciting to see develop.
As a software developer I can't help but geek out over all the internal issues you solve to make all this happen. I've learned a lot about development along the way as I've followed these devlogs as well. Thanks for that!
One idea for the free built structures, have you considered requiring some form of discovery, like knot tying, in order to build things that are held up by other items, and then the construction might even need some string for each of the points where the 'floating' item touches a 'grounded' item (something touching the ground or already tied to a grounded item).
If you prefer leaving it as is for some creative freedom I am totally fine with that too, but I think the string idea would help keep some of the more ridiculous buildings in check while not being terribly difficult for people to get the resources for.
EDIT: An idea for the Steam page. Maybe put the picture of the world gen page earlier so it is visible without scrolling. I think that having a whole world to explore is one of your biggest calling cards, and if it is more visible it may help draw people in more than if they just see a few picture of people and trees. Don't get me wrong, tpeopleunique
Awesome as always.
What could be cool would be to hide the tech tree from the user. You'd have to navigate the discoveries from yourself. The tech tree could then show what you have discovered, but not where it will lead.
You should have a report bug/make comment-button as part of the in-game UI, like they did in Subnautica! That way people can tell you about something at the moment when it happens, and you can get a fresh log file.
Also I love the new look. Would really work great with a possession mechanic like in Dungeon Keeper, where you can take control of any sapien and play as them in first person mode.
I appreciate the new trees, makes it look more realistic for sure.
Theres no shadows coming from the new leaves
Sunrise light appearing down trees (on left) at 44s. Impressive!
It would be kinda cool to open a menu and see all the current and scheduled tasks to reorganize them, change the priority etc. Keep up the awesome work :)
honestly I really like the old pine trees :( other then that, amazing work as always. If you want to stick with the new design, Id either remove a little bit of detail complexity, or increase it to the other trees, they do feel a bit less stylised then everything else in the game.
i think you should simplify the faces of the sapiens. like a blank flat face with eyebrows and a simple nose. this will help the sapiens fit with the aesthetic of the world.
I'm glad to hear there's still work being done on this game! Progress is going pretty well, and that makes me excited for the release!
Woah, even though this game is relatively low poly compared to other games, it looks amazing! If someone showed me this game without me having any previous knowledge about its development I would've thought this took at least a team of ten people! Great work man
Look into adjusting the normals for your new pine tree foliage. It's the way to make the leafy bits not look too dark. :) In blender, if you go into edit mode, you can mess with the normals under Mesh > Normals > Point to Target. (You'll also need to turn on the Split Normals option in the overlays dropdown in order to see them.) You want them all to point out away from the trunk. That way it will light the planes as if they're a volume rather than individual planes. It's basically a way to fake the translucency of the leaves,. Standard issue for video game foliage. It'll feel like the holy grail once you try it. ^^
If this comment isn't enough info, there are lots of video tutorials here on youtube. It's actually very easy to do.
I really like those fluffy baguette shaped trees, hopefully they don't change too much :)
Been following your game for a number of years, not even my sort of game I just am enjoying the process!
That resource routing mechanic is awesome!
That moment when you subscribed to too many game developers channel that you have no idea what is this game and when you subbed to the channel.
nevertheless this game looks very interesting, good luck with your project! (edit) the graphics is amazing too!
This is the first time this has looked like a full game. Everything has come together nicely. Now for the content.
Only thought: Discovery may be the correct word, but I dont think its the right word.
Looking great! Nice to see a devlog again. =)
I have an idea regarding the storage area menu. I think it's super cool that you show a map of all the storage areas. I was just thinking that it might be handy to have the icons of the storage areas on the map not completely disappear when they're outside of the circle of vision. Instead of making them disappear, you could just leave the icons at the border (in the direction they would be) and make them slightly transparent and maybe a bit smaller, but still clickable. This would make it so that one doesn't have to go back and forth multiple times and also doesn't miss an area that is far away.
Those graphics are looking great! One thing I've noticed though is that the ground looks very reflective, especially the dirt. I think it can be slightly reflective as that's the style of the game but maybe making it slightly less would look more natural.
Make tech tree screen big as much as you can. You can put descriptions on them too but usually all you need to know what will it add to the game and how you can do the new thing after you unlock it too not just when you unlock it.
The excitement for the release of this game is the only thing keeping me going these days
Love the visual changes. The bloom and new trees really elevate it to the next level.
Glad to see you back. Love the new trees, and I think it's a great idea to keep some of the content secret.
Really nice progress, the game starts looking "dense" and "lively" now. Makes me want to jump right into playing it. I love the immersion the "close-up" play-style gives and think the decision to restrict "top-down" playing style was a good one. I would even love to see it played in 1st-person mode with the "chief" walking around and giving orders...
Looking at the video votes: I wonder who is down-voting devlog videos and for what reason...
i just finished catching up with all the devlogs, been watching since summer, and wow a lot of progress was made in just the last few videos. keep up the amazing, inspiring work, I can't wait to get sapiens for myself!
I haven’t watched for months, its come so far
Same. I have not watched for one year
It would be cool if each storage route had a hidden counter where if the sapiens do it X amount of times they go a bit faster and the Y amount of times more and go a bit faster
the only thing that bothers me is how limited the tree rendering is i wish there was a way to make the illusion of trees in the distance without having to render them fully
OMG I WANT TO GET INTO THIS
also look at those trees so amazing
the new trees look great! how about adding more bush in the forests? thicker layer just above the ground would make it even more realistic + hazelnuts for example were an important staple in the stone age, particularly in northern/central europe where forests like those you have ingame dominated the landscape
WOOOO DEVLOG!!
Looking really nice!
Great work as always.
The game looks totally different and beautiful.
love the direction
The game looks fantastic. I would like to involve in the debug processes. I will try to find as errors as much when you expand it.
Note:Not gonna lie your building system is even better than planet zoo and planet coaster and that's an amazing feat.
this is looking really really good, love the hard work!
Wow this is starting to look really good. Great work!
your work is a huge inspiration to me
I hope the trailer content will include more animals!
Awsome Dave! I like the new direction of the trees
Looks fantastic as ever! Good luck with your alpha stage
Looks like a very great game already! Keep it up Dave!
this is looking incredible, been a pleasure to watch it develop
Sounds awesome 👌 I'll wait patiently for the release ☺️☺️
The new interface and the improvement on storage areas are both awesome !! i really can't wait to see the final game and play it
Nice improvements, I'm happy to hear you're still working on it :)
I loved the blockheads and I'm loving the look of this game!
can't wait to build some cool looking buildings in this game
These videos are a great source of motivation for my own projects, thank you for making them. Can't wait to see more!
yo Ive been waiting for this for ages, right of the bat wth first 30 seconds and the game looks Awesome
Hope I can be a tester someday! Your work is amazing 👏
WOW! The game is looking that much better every Devlog! Keep up the great work, cant wait to enjoy the game when it releases :)
You scared me in those first few seconds with the old pine model... Then my eyes got so happy what came after that :)
Didn't get this notification, but I'm happy to have found it
Question: Will there be clothing options for Sapiens? like a warm coat in colder weather.
He did talk about that in a previous devlog, wool will probably be used for clothing
Damn i remeber back when there were no trees, its amazing to see how far this game has come
New Pines look great
This looks great. Really starting to wonder how far the tech tree goes with this as well.
Gorgeous graphics dude, congratulations, nice job.
very nice GUI, very cute, i like it a lot!
im looking forward to it
The awesomeness is awesome
Great news, I am happy for you ... but I will miss the video updates :)
Gods I can't wait for the release
I love the new pine trees.
And I love the storage location system. But it would be good if you could group and name the different locations. Just having them individually on a world map is a bit cumbersome.
And please make the devlogs monthly, even if you don't show much. They are always a highlight and I'm already sad that there is an end in sight.
Les go sapiens devlog!!!
Yes! An update!
im glad that i follow this game : )
yay! he's back!
New video lets goooooo!
If we're going to be having mining outposts, could we have a system for tribe separation? So basically, we separate it into sub-tribes for organization purposes. It'd be a bit confusing if you have 25 different sapiens all across a whole region without being able to separate them into categories. Additionally, it could help if we could designate certain storage areas to certain subgroups of your tribe.
Man your pfp tells me you are a goddamn legend. A quality meme.
@@gefulltetaubenbrust2788 I am a goddamn legend, which is why Dave should listen to my suggestion.
Edit: NVM he responsded to me on discord
You should let the player choose the quantity of how much should be delivered in the route system. Also, when you click the "F" key or something, it automatically zoomes towards the selected storage unit inside the GUI, (like in the Unity Editor).
Very nice ! At 11:18, I see the green flash on-screen... is that a video compression artifact , or is that an in-game glitched texture ?
Cool man!
Yeeee here we gooo
Prefer the previous version of pine trees. The current version is not stylized enough compared to the rest of the world.
Same to be quite honest. I think the way to go would be to make more small details for the old version, so it fits with the other trees, which i think are just right on the realism spectrum.
Hi Dave what are your thoughts on being able to develop your little primitive tribe into a medieval like town in the future
You should make it so you can customise a tribe leader
late night sapiens
nice
The text and ui is a pretty small when watching on a TV. Might want to have an option to make it bigger especially if you want CZcamsrs/streamers playing it.
I kind of miss the struggle to get fire. What do I mean?
In the stone age it was that people couldn't make fire at first and had to wait until fire was started on its own. Until they discovered how to make it. It could be a nice early gameplay feateru where you have to protect your fire because you have no way how to make it and rain can extinguish it
I love this idea for a different game. But I think this would just add annoying struggles into the game. Imagine if you are at your tenth restart. Especially if you want to have a city builder.
@@benrex7775 it's not a restart, it's just in the beginning. After you have fire for a while, you can research how to make it. Or if it goes out, you need to wait for another storm
@@MinecraftCZkanal But if you open a new world?
I think the old trees are iconic to Sapiens. It's like the one picture in my mind when I think of this game. Similarly to how the grass block or the creeper are iconic in Minecraft. It's sad to see the old tree texture gone because that was the defining image of the game. That's what gave the feeling that this game is Sapiens. I will miss that
Will there be any fighting between tribes?
what if there was a way to go into "Messiah" mode? where you could actually take the form of a sapien and walk around in this world and do some stuff n things? is that maybe something you could do, maybe something you can only do later on in the game?
When i first saw this game 1 a 2 years ago i was like: me luv evolution me luv the game me want play. Eventualy: I LOVE IT I CANT WAIT FOR IT TO PLAY IT WHEN DOES IK COME OUT ACCUALY?
I personally prefer the old trees
