DD15 low oil pressure and what to look for.

  • What to look for when you have low oil pressure on your DD15, the DD13 is very similar so this video can be used towards both. If you have a low oil pressure fault code or your oil pressure is below normal. You should stop and have it looked at immediately.
Normal oil pressure when the engine is cold should be greater than 60 psi, as the oil temp begins to rise, normal operating temperature, the pressure will drop and at idle should around 15-25 psi.
In this particular incident my customer would get to a stop and the oil pressure would drop for a split second to ZERO. Luckily we were able to repair the issue and get the truck back on the road.

Oil pumps very seldom fail on the DD15 and DD13.

So you recommend replacing the pickup tube because you had to remove it already? You didn't want to replace the front pump where the front of the tubes went into that were spinning? Trying to understand your thought of why replacing the pickup vs just cleaning it and replacing the seals. Not like it had metal through it , top is aluminum where the tubes and rings are , but so is the front oil pump where the front of the tubes went into that you didn't bother replacing.Trying to understand WHY you replaced that but didnt bother replacing the front pump where the tubes went into.......

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  Před 2 lety

The oil pump is very reliable, the failure typically occurs at the pickup tube (suction module) and the orings will harden and allow oil escape.
The suction module has an internal valve that fails and will get stuck.
In my opinion, I automatically replace the suction module and the orings because I don’t want to run the risk of it failing on my watch.
Now if this is something you are doing on your own truck then it’s your decision to make. But I don’t want the responsibility of engine failure because I didn’t want to change a part that cost less than $200.

I'm pretty sure it's the plastic section manifolds that have the problem. The o-rings are a problem on either style I'm sure. I'm actually trying to research and find out if the plastic and cast aluminum suction manifolds are in fact interchangeable. Freightliner will tell you they're not even if they are so that's not a good source. It seems like it would be a direct swap. The metal one isn't going to crack from oil pressure and blow out like the plastic ones do. Those fail on the pressure side, the o-rings tend to fail on the vacuum side

Hey man great video. Question: I have a 2015 dd13 and my oil gauge goes down to about 20 psi when idling, sometimes is at 25 but it does go down to 20 pis at times. Is this something I should worry about and probably have the O- rings replaced and oil module? Thank you

Hello, apologize for the late response.
I changed everything that is mentioned in this video. Suction oil module, O-rings, oil pan gasket seal, oil pan bolts. After changes made my oil pressure went up to almost 75 when cold start. And 25 or 30 when hot idling.
I recommend making all changes. Goo luck

Anderson james parts will depend slightly on what year truck you have. The first DD15 engine parts were a little more expensive, then slight modifications were made and pricing dropped a little.
But typically in labor you are looking at 6-8. What year is your truck?

@@notkirill6991 start with an oil change using good quality motor oil and a factory oil filter. Also, replace the oil pressure sensor for good measure.
      Start there.
Remember, oil change first, start the engine and verify oil pressure is good before you replace the fuel filters (not sure if you were going to. But if you did)
Never change both at the same time. These trucks are not like the oils Series 60 or Cummins N14, M11.
