- Every bathroom in America probably had these at one time if not currently. When updating your bathroom you probably will remove them and have holes behind them to fix.
In this video we show you how to fix those holes with blowout patches or California patches as some people call them.

Thank you! Check back. I’ll post it soon.
Is it too much to say this video changed my life? Cuz it just did.
I hateeeee those lovely little things 😂😂😂 great video!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! My daughter just broke my ceramic towel bar exactly like your video. My question is do you now install the new towel bar? And if I wanted to put the same ceramic one, how do u do that?
Thanks. Those things are very easy to pull out. They are like a piece of tile. Once the wall is patched, you can install a new one. Usually it’s installed with anchors and screws. To install the ceramic one back in, you can you tile mastic from Home Depot and assemble it on the wall and use tape to secure it to the wall till it drys. Hope that helps
Extremely helpful, mine is a new built with these ugly ass ceramic bases. I will be removing them asap.
Great video! I'm so over looking at these ceramic towel holders... Question.. do you allow the mud to dry between coats or do you apply the second and if needed 3rd coat while the mud is still wet?
I use fast set mud. It doesn’t dry all the way but it sets up so you can apply second or third coats. It’s the bag stuff you mix
@@finaltouchdrywall Awesome, Thank you kindly for this information and thanks for replying.👍
Do you have a recommended product? I am not seeing anything locally that’s a drywall patch like shown, just the aluminum patches… is that enough?
Is that a drywall patch available to buy at the local HD or whatnot?
Nice job. Question don’t you find it easier to just install a support board behind wall instead of the paper on surface and then covering up that extra thickness?
Could you post the list of materials ? What exactly I need to buy? Thanks
Small pieces of 1/2 inch drywall, I used Sheetrock 20 min mud, and the texture was regular drywall mud mixed with water soupy. 10 inch drywall knife, pan, hopper with small tip and air compressor. Hope that helps.
What grit sanding block do you use?
It’s a medium/fine at Home Depot
Do you have a supply list?
Do you have to mount a piece of wood behind the hole to attach a new fixture
It helps but it’s required.
I wonder if my landlord will let me do this. The old owners updated the master and guest baths but not the secondary upstairs one my kids use. It's sooooo old lol
How can you add the texture if you don’t have the sprayer?
They sell cans of orange peel for texture at Home Depot or sherwin Williams.
is that actually a piece of drywall? does it come in small pieces like that or did you have a full sheet of drywall and you just cut pieces off?
Yes it’s cut off a sheet of drywall. You can’t buy small pieces like that. The smallest they sell is 2x2. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
What is the orange peel part (just to add texture?) and can it all just be painted and look okay without that part?
If it is textured like orange peel it needs to be. If not it won’t match.
@@finaltouchdrywallWhile we're at it, if you use cheap paint, it won't match, either. Use Behr's Marquee. Yes, it's expensive, but it ABSOLUTELY will match perfectly. Not as expensive as Sherwin Williams, tho! It's very forgiving. Dutch Boy is inordinately hard to make it cover with.
How did you removed them?
It’s super simple! I’ll do a video on how to remove them. Check back with us.
How long between layers?
We use 5-20-45 min mud so it sets in that time. You can coat it when it sets you
How do i reset one that was pulled off the wall? There is no hole but the brown paper is exposed and the spot on the wall is bigger than the holder.
You might have to have it repaired if the spot is bigger then the holder. Replace the towel bar also.
@@finaltouchdrywall I appreciate the input. Thanks. I suppose that means I have to cut a section of wall out and replace it.
Thanks for making the video.
Suggestion: not stable camera - unable to watch this due to motion sickness.
Thanks for the feedback. It was made with a go pro.
I actually found the POV very helpful
@@finaltouchdrywallWhat about a gyroscope or a Stedi cam type?
Aren't these the type that slide onto a track that's mounted first? Just score the adhesive edge, and push them up, to guide off the track. I may be wrong.
Great video and results but waaaay more involved than what I can handle as a DIYer. Probably will just patch and spackle 🤣 and find something to cover up the patch job.
Thank you. It’s a little advanced but it can be done.
One step at a time. You got nothing to lose. You already have a HOLE, can't make if much worse.
But how was the old one removed?
They come out easy. They are just glued into the drywall.
Sorry, dumb electrician here. I was taught that a blowout patch started with screwing a piece of wood behind the hole into the remaining drywall, and then screwing the patch into the wood. Is that not necessary?
What do you do if the ceramic bar is on ceramic tile from the 70's?? I can show a picture if you'd like.
The tile is a little trickier. That you can’t do the same unless you replace the tile or at least the one piece but you won’t find anything from the 70’s
@@finaltouchdrywallIf it's that disgusting black mastic they used on flooring, I hear it comes off with water if it sits. It does NOT come off any other way that I know of.
I say that, because cheap people would grab that nasty stuff when someone left it in the basement from 20 years ago.
Downside? It's LOADED with asbestos. Like 70%! You DO NOT want to inhale it.
If you keep it wet and don't try to scrape it, it shouldn't be too bad, tho. Circulate air right outside, and leave the HVAC vents covered. You also don't want it through the HVAC system. It might take 5 years to get it out of there.
Most manly men would just rip it right off, but that's a bad idea. Be real, REAL careful if you're not sure what it is. It can be tested for cheap, tho.
Don't bother scraping it. A, even a blowtorch won't get it off (asbestos doesn't burn, remember...) and B, stupid people (me) have already tried it. It's NOT coming off.
Why in earth do these ugly ceramic things that leave holes in the wall even exist!?! You made this look easy, but lost me at having to cut drywall and buy and mix stuff to plaster to the wall 😅 going to have to call my dad in for this one.
you did not SHOW HOW you removed it
Watch this one.

Pry bar and hammer (gently)
Do not do this! Cut the holes horizontally to the studs and attach 2x4 blocking inside the wall. Attach a new piece of drywall and secure to the blocking.
Can I just pay you to do it?! I’ll take the bar down…that’s the limit of my handiness
