- A couple of days ago Nintendo revealed the next Super Mario Bros. game: Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The game appears to take heavy inspiration from the story “Alice in Wonderland” and appears to be Mario’s weirdest adventure to date.
In this video, we are going to completely overanalyze the first trailer of Super Mario Bro. Wonder - that was shown during the Nintendo Direct.
We will not only discuss tons of things that were easy to miss during the Super Mario Bros. Wonder trailer reveal, but we will also chat about where Nintendo took inspiration for this game and what is going on with the weird theming of the game.

aw man I’m so happy to see you back
Same here
He was gone so long because he played all the soulslike games you never heard before
Didn't expect you here mate.
But yes it's great to see him back!
Ok, what? you don't have any likes but 1 million subs? Lemme change that...
Hello verified person
THE RETURN OF THE KING!!! We missed you Ceave!!!!!
Facts
I was just about to say that
For real!!!!
the return of the slightly above average content creator
Was just about to say that!
For Yoshi being a playable character, I think the fact that there was only Yoshis and not any other character in the section means that maybe he’s only playable in certain levels, OR it could be some sort of clear condition/extra challenge to get a wonder-seed?
Yea I think it's most likely a wonder section or whatever they're gonna be called
I hope you can unlock it maybe for normal levels, only yoshi and daisy look normal, I just can’t get used to Mario sprite
Yeah, most likely the playable characters will temporarily be turned into Yoshi, very much like it worked in Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3, I believe
@@NurioMarayana you’re probably right, because in the short section of the trailer, ALL 3 of the characters were yoshis, and they didn’t give him a proper character reveal like any of the other characters.
Yeah it definitely just turns players 1-4 into green, red, yellow, and blue yoshi respectively
“it can’t be an item storage”
After 1 year of nothing, Ceave has finally appeared back with a new video. I was so worried something bad happened to him but it’s nice seeing him return. We all missed you.
He had a new job
Now I'm waiting for Dani

Nah, he said, thet he wanted a break, and he will probably return when the next Mario releases.
I never expected Ceaves intro to bring me so much happiness. I did not realize just how much I missed the words "let's do this"
I missed the way he said hooray
And the music in the intro is so nostalgic
So true!
Same! I've never been so emotional during a video opening
i miss how the "let's do this" subtitle is always intentionally offset by random amounts of time
I've had an absolutely terrible month, nothing has been going right...and then you come back. First time I've been in a good mood in weeks. Glad you're back, and can't wait to see all of the new stuff you have planned!
I hope this month has been going better for you :)
I get that it's 2 months ago,but I hope those months are greater
Sooo, has this month been better?
It's funny in retrospect, two months later, that everyone including Ceave picked apart every frame of this trailer and no one noticed Martinet wasn't in it
Alice in Wonderland is *incredibly* popular in Japan. Ever since it showed up there in 1899 it's been translated into Japanese over 400 times.
So the idea that Mario took direct inspiration from the Alice books back in the 80s isn't really all that farfetched at all. It's actually incredibly likely.
I think that Miyamoto said that it was actually his inspiration in an interview.
There's no way this guy returns after a whole year. What a legend!
two years actually
this is actually insane to see
@@spocite two whole years. Wow. I figured he forgot his password or something lmfao

Yoshis riding Yoshis CONFIRMED (also congrats on your marriage!)
As for the purple coins, I think it's worth pointing out that the counter goes up to three digits, presumably 999. I think they will be valuable but are intended to be collected over the course of the entire campaign as opposed to the gold coins that reset to 0 after collecting 100, and the purples could either work as a currency that can be spent at shops or some unlockables when you reach certain values.
I agree with the last part. In Odyssey purple coins were local coins exclusively to buy stuff at the shop, it would make sense they work similar here
Sorta like star bits in the galaxy games?
I assumed the currency thing, too... especially since purple coins in Odyssey were used in shops... they may even do something like Odyssey, where the purple coins collected only apply to the world... maybe
I wonder if they’ll be used like purple coins in odyssey, maybe used to buy characters or costumes
Yeah I thought that too. Purple coins from Mario odyssey were used to purchase things so I can't see why not.
and when the world needed him most... he came back ✨

One thing you might have missed is that if you check the 1-up / life section of the UI when mario rides yoshi yoshi is displayed like one of the player characters which seems very interesting as it would indicate it's a player character riding on top of a yoshi player character.
When the world needed him most, he returned.

I can't tell you how many times in the past 2 years I have looked back at your channel hoping to find something new. You don't owe us anything (content, explanations, etc), but it's good to have you back, Ceave!
Ceave its really so incredible that you're back. Your mario maker videos were such a huge inspiration for me back in the day and are a large part of what set me on the game design path that I'm on now. (graduating in a year!) Your channel and editing style are also such a source of good childhood memories and I'd always be so sad whenever I saw one of your old videos in recommended. So happy you're back, I hope it goes well for you and you treat yourself well
11:40 ITS CONFIRMED
YOU CAN FINALLY RIDE A YOSHI AS YOSHI WE ARE SO BACK!!!
Theory for the purple coins: they could potentially work like in odessey, you have limited amount per level and they don't respawn. So they kind of work like collectibles and there would be a dedicated shop for them.
A shop, or maybe they could unlock levels / a secret world or something along those lines
They seem to have a significant relationship to the Wonder modes in each stage, because the coin counter converts between 000 and 000.0, so the Wonder mode seems to transform the coins in some capacity and gives us an easy way to tell whether the gameplay is “standard” or not
yeah a shop system is the most logical explanation
Nice pfp
That'd be cool
OH MY GOD HE'S BACK
THE ABSOLUTE LEGEND IS FINALLY BACK
Words cannot even come close to describing how happy I am right now, Ceave is my favorite CZcamsr ever and seeing him come back after almost 2 years brings me an indescribable amount of joy
If you're somehow reading this, Ceave, welcome back!!! We all missed you a lot, and are mainly just glad to hear that you're doing well.
I hope you'll have more motivation and have more fun making content this time, we all very much enjoy watching your content and you deserve to enjoy making it!
Basically my thoughts exactly!!!
Idea for future videos:
- Which power ups / world themes are the most likely to return in Super Mario Bros. Wonder?
I don’t usually care too much about CZcams videos and people I don’t even know, but seeing that you finally uploaded a video makes me so happy! I’m not sure if this means you’ll be making more, but for now I’m just glad that you’re still here.
There's just something incredibly satisfying about listening a hardcore fan nerding out about a certain topic you like, deep-diving into things you never knew existed. Thank you Ceave!

Ceave is by far the greatest Nintendo youtuber, so ridiculously happy he's back
I was at the gym and my jaw dropped when I saw an upload notification from you.
Finally you came back, I really enjoy your Mario Bros challenge videos like minimum amount of points or no coins run. Thank you for coming back!
I saw the thumbnail and thought “wait is that CEAVE?!” Love to have you back dude
THE LEGEND HAD RETUUUURNED!!!!
But seriously we missed you Ceave. And not just your videos, but simply hearing your charming voice. Hope things have been going well in life ❤❤❤
Great to have you back Ceave! Something I think you missed is that in the section with the four playable Yoshis, Yoshi doesn't take damage from the bullet bills when he touches them. I don't know if the bullet bills are just part of the background or if they actually have a hitbox, but I think it's very possible that Yoshi is an "easy mode" character similar to Nabbit where he can't take damage.
yeah because yoshi can also flutter
That actually makes a lot of sense!
...It's a shame that people like me who enjoy a good challenge would have to choose between playing Yoshi or having our gameplay feel challenging, though lol
I’m so happy! I’ve been rewatching your back catalog just missing your stuff!
I don't watch too much Mario content anymore, but you're always going to be the one exception. Love your videos, your bubbly and enthusiastic and bubbly personality and your fun editing style. I am super happy that you're back, but you don't owe us anything Ceave, so do whatever is the best for you.
When I watched the trailer, I thought to myself, “Man, Ceave is gonna be excited about this.” I wistfully thought about how cool it would be if it got you interested in making videos again, but HERE YOU ACTUALLY ARE!!! I’m SO EXCITED!!! ❤
Alice in Wonderland actually has had some influence in Japanese media, not because of the story in of itself but because of Disney's Alice in Wonderland. Disney's animations were highly influential in Japan post-war. Anime, for example, is largely its own thing but many stylistic choices and early inspirations came from Disney, Tezuka particularly will credit movies like Bambi as being an influence on him.
The entirety of the Megami Tensei series, although the vast majority of demons/personas being of Japanese folklore and Buddhist origin, have some standouts non-eastern influences, including some Aztec and Mayan gods, some Greek/Roman and Nordic gods, some Christian figures, and, bizarrely enough, Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Bizarre wouldn't you say? I couldn't tell you why or exactly how pervasive the story is in Japanese culture, but clearly it's enough that they'd include her as a character on par with mythical beings.
The style we nowadays associate with manga and anime came from Osamu Tezuka being inspired by Betty Boop, Mickey Mouse, and old Disney cartoons-big, round eyes, etc.
@@vitorluiz7538 Fuck, yeah it's Tezuka, I feel dumb af for not remembering the right name. Both talented and highly influential japanese animators, known for pretty different reasons.
I'd also add that Alice/similar styled characters show up in other japanese games such as Final Fantasy 14, specifically wearing the Disney blue frock. I don't know the history, but i think like youve said there's more of a link there than some have picked up on
Man, North Korea is missing out on so much of this media melting pot that is the world.
Idk why but mentioning megaten was such a whiplash. It's the least thing I expected to read after talking about mario and disney lol
I am so incredibly happy to see you around again, Ceave. It seriously turned my day around for the better. Welcome back!
18:05 respectfully, I think the term is “substance use,” not “substance abuse”. One is lighthearted and the other is traumatic. The two are as different as having a beer with a friend and being an alcoholic.
I think the scarcity of the pink coins will actually insentivise us to collect them even more given that they will probably have an important role in progression ex : unlock secret stages. I think having to build up a small quantity of these instead of just collecting hundreds and hundreds is much more encouraging. As for the "catterpillar" trees at the start, I think they represent wonder seeds.
Interesting
i feel like those coins are going to become like yoshis island red coins
I love how at 16:12 you can’t tell if he misspoke or if he’s just being Ceave
So excited you are back!!!
I love both kinds of content! Happy to have you back!
Another interesting thing about the regular coins vs the purple coins: Regular coins only have two digits, indicating that when you gather 100 they convert to a life as usual. However, purple coins have THREE whole digits which - combined with the fact that you get them in small numbers, indicates to me they are a resource you are expected to gather or maybe hoard a lot of. They won't be converted to lives, instead they will probably work as an actual form of currency in some way.
If this is the case, why are the decimals for these coins only visible in the trippy wonder mode and not the regular mode in each stage?
Maybe after you add up the number fully, you get one of those things that come from the end of the level? That would probably mean purple coins are a 1-time collection thing
@the8thark perhaps you cruelly lose fractional purple coins when you stop tripping balls!
Perhaps the fraction will stay if you happen to have fractional purple coins, and the fraction disappears if you can't collect purple coins at the time. Maybe that seems silly though. Just keep the fraction.
Maybe coins are more rare but worth more when you're not tripping balls? Maybe?
100% agree, I noticed the tracker going over 100 in trailer
That would make sense, kinda like how Star Coins in NSMB (and NSMB2, but I might be wrong) were also used as a currency to unlock Mushroom Houses.
Regular coins are seemingly still just for getting lives, so then purple coins could either be related to unlocking levels (which is however propably done with Wonder Seeds) or more likely as an actual in game currency for item shop or something similar. Especially since you can seemingly have so many of these.
The thing is that the decimal digit as well as the purple coin shards only appear while the level is in Wacky-Wonder-Flower-Mode. When not in that mode, one purple coin is just worth exactly one. The Wonder Seed that you get at the end of a Wonder-Flower-Section also has purple coin shards around it, so it will propably round up your count to a whole number.
So this whole parralel / wacky world thing has got to somehow be related to the purple coins.
Two theories:
A) There are special parallel world levels where your number of purple coins is essentially how long you survive within them
B) Each character has a different animal power up and the purple coins are used to upgrade their abilities or to buy them into your inventory
What if the game just has a ton of powerups lol.

Awesome to see you back at it
When it comes to how a score feels, it's all relative. If something can tick up in small increments like 0.1, then getting a reward worth 10 points feels substantial. As for why scores in SMB1 are so high, they're in line with arcade games of the time, and scores big or small can feel rewarding, as long as the rewards scale with the challenge. If I had to guess, I think the purple coins are global in this game, and your total carries through levels. Maybe they can be used to unlock levels like in NSMB1.
Yeah, that part of the video really confused me. It's usually the case that _inflated_ numbers are the ones that are painted as less important. Even if it is only relative, having something be in smaller increments usually gives at least the illusion of it being more scarce, valuable, and important. An example is something that like Old School Runescape. If every level in Prayer gave me 1000 Prayer Points, I wouldn't really care as much to keep track of that stat as if it gives me only 1 (even if they were functionally identical). When I get only one, it tells me that each point is important and makes it more satisfying to get. Big numbers tend to lose that satisfaction far faster than smaller ones.
Also, the fact that the Purple Coin total has 3 zeros instead of 2 should have probably been the giveaway that this is a global currency.
1: Alice in Wonderland is absolutely not just a western thing. It's crazy popular in Japan, possibly even more than in the west, which is why it seems like every other anime has a blonde girl in a dress named Alice and half the fantasy media has a rabbitman in it.
2: Miyamoto did once state in a 2005 interview that Alice in Wonderland inspired the mushroom mechanic; during the early prototyping stages, they made Mario too big, and when they started editing the sprite to shrink it down, it sparked a thought about Alice growing and shrinking and they decided to make it a mechanic. Weirdly, they've since downplayed or outright denied the connection, and nobody's quite sure why.
3: Are you sure that's an angel's trumpet? It looks like a pitcher plant, to me. Like, it's practically the same design as the pokemon Victreebel.
4: Glad to have you back, king
So happy to see you back!
the analytic approach and essay like story telling of facts surrounding the series accompanied with the editing is superb. its some of the greatest i have seen on this subject. and me myself have been down a rabbit hole looking at videos like this as of late. You earned yourself a new subscriber half way through the video.
The small purple coin bits are actually tied to the wonder flower section, so I think the idea is that there'll be a bunch of those small coins in those sections that you have to collect, and then when its over youll keep whatever (full) purple coins you collected, discarding the decimal (you can see the decimal value disappear when collecting the wonder seed), so I think if you fail to complete the section you won't get to keep all of the bits you collected.
I think the purple coins having fractional values is because they're worth *more* as full units than normal coins, like I think the normal coins will just be used for 1 ups or so, whilst the purple coins will have purpose for shops or so in the game.
As another analysis video pointed out, they aren't always fractional. The purple coins only become fractional once in "wonder mode", as seen by the edges of the screen turning dreamy. You can see in other instances in the trailer, collecting the purple coins do reward whole amounts while NOT in wonder mode. If you want to see the other analysis, it's by NintendoBlackCrisis. Both Ceave's and Crisis' analysis misses things that the other points out, so it's well-worth giving both a watch.
either they carry over between levels or there’s just an absolutely obscene amount of them considering the counter goes into the triple digits
The same could be achieved by multiplying all purple coin costs by 10 and making the big coins worth 100.
I think they're fractional because there will be 100 whole purple coins in every level. 100 is an easy-to-remember number, but it's pretty low for a coin-like collectable. Going to 1000 risks making people mentally check-out, decimals keep the number manageable.
If you tell me to collect 10 special coins in every level, I'm going to assume I need to do that in every level to unlock a bonus world.
If you tell me to collect 100 special coins in every level, I'm going to try it on levels I like and assume it's just there for neat extras.
If you tell me to collect 1000 special coins in every level, I'm going to think you're taking the piss and not bother.
"collect 100, but most of the coins are worth 0.1" seems more manageable than "collect 1000" despite them both being the same thing.
Welcome back! Missed your videos a lot!
Your content is unique. I’m glad you’re back!!
I think the purple coins have a good reason to have decimals
It looks to me light a stopwatch timer
Entering the wonder world version of the stage, you can only stay there for a certain amount of time
So perhaps the coins determine how long you can stay in the alternate stage?
Maybe there is a post level/world special stage where you’re timed
Who knows
it could be for skins
@@dogeking007what
@@Tyranitar. Like a currency that you can spend in "Toad" houses to unlock costumes/skins/alternative character visuals.
To me it just looks like normal coins but flower shaped instead of round.
If this is the case, why are the decimals for these coins only visible in the trippy wonder mode and not the regular mode in each stage?
The Alice in Wonderland similarities are certainly no coincidence. You said in the video that AiW is a very western thing and its true that its from britain but the japanese for some reason are obsessed with it.
There are tons of different adaptions to it. There are dozens of anime and movies that are straight up alternative versions of AiW or are heavily inspired by it and even more that make references to it.
Im not quite sure how to make it clear just how much they love AiW but be assured that they do, maybe even more than the rest of the world.
To be fair, there is a genre of anime and manga similar to Alice in Wonderland: Isekai/Portal Manga/Anime
If I had a nickel for every time a manga named a major female character Alice, I'd be rich. It's a weird cultural quirk but is real as hell. So many manga are aesthetically inspired by it even if they don't explicitly use the name.
@@Doublemonk0506 bro did not just say isekai is an alice in wonderland reference 💀 (kinda true tho)
@@Doublemonk0506 It’s true that Alice in Wonderland is Isekai, but the whole genre of humans traveling to alternate worlds is older than both. More recently we have the Chronicles of Narnia and John Carter of Mars, but before still we had Gulliver’s Travels, Peter Pan, and Journey to the Center of the Earth, but even before still there were myths of descent to the underworld, like Orpheus and Izanagi. From what I’ve heard, normal people traveling from the real world to a fantastic world was the default assumption for fantastical fiction until Tolkien popularized creating an entire unrelated world from scratch.
I think it’s still more common for fantasy speculative fiction to be set in a completely new world while scientific speculative fiction is set in our world. For example, Star Wars is set in our universe, but “a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away”. (Star Wars is arguably science fantasy but I don’t think that’s too relevant right now.)
@@ilonachanI don't think that's what they were saying

Welcome back Ceave, we've missed you ever since you initially paused ur activity on CZcams on July 13, 2021...damn it's already been 2 years...
My theory on the two types of coins is that the yellow coins are only there to highlight paths and to give a 1up on gathering one hundred coins, while the purples are put in more decorative spots and are some type of meta currency similar to the oddesy lookalikes
I think you'll have limited time available in trippy mode after getting the purple flower. Purple coins will add to your trippy mode time bank i.e. the 1/10 per coin is one tenth of a second.
@@Surfinite yeah that’s what I gathered as well lol
Seems more like blues in sm64 - three star coins? Hidden, purps and end?
Here is just some random stuff I noticed:
- There is a faint dark circle UI element next to mario's when in multiplayer representing each player. (1:57)
- The timer only sometimes appears in the "hallucination state." (1:10 it does not, 1:14 it does)
- More of a prediction then a missed detail but I think they will tie the scoring system to "combos" rather than numbers. (0:23)
- The decimal place only appears in the "hallucination state" for the purple coin shards.
- There are both purple coin shards and full purple coins (1:30 shows a full one). The shards have decimals so they can be put in clusters.
- In the scene with all the bull sheep things (1:14), purple coin shards fade out and seem to disappear. Also the flag can be knocked over.

Always loved your content and style, welcome back.
Great to have you back and I hope you take good care of yourself!
The purple coins may also be a more rare collectable you always need more of, making you really work for each one and also explaining why they are used instead of star coins.
dont think theyd be rarer than coins as the counter start with three digits (000) while the coin counter only starts with 2 (00). also consudering the big numbers psychology itd be weird for them to be rare imo
I think “more useful” describes them better than “more rare”
@@Ieno Normal coins do not need a third digit because collecting 100 gives you an extra life.
I feel like that the violet coins could have two functions. The first is for a shop of some kind that sells who knows what. While the second could be for 100%ing a level, as there are the big 10 violet coins which could replace the star coins and give incentive to collecting them if there is a shop. Having the player collect maybe 100 purple coins to perfectly finish a level would also give the game more longevity for the long run
This. Just like odyssey. You can buy clothes and stickers for your UFO etc
Glad you’re back!
It is so good to have you back, and even though I've never played a RE game, your analysis is next on my to watch list, because I cannot wait to hear more of your thoughts on games, no matter the style.
04:00 I think those might not be caterpillars but rather Wonder Seeds.
Concerning the overhaul of the Co-op mechanics: I think you might not be able to jump on each other, pick each other up or push each other around anymore. At several points in the trailer, the characters seemingly "clip" into each other (they just go behind one another) implying that everyone basically plays on a seperate layers, so you won't get in each other's way anymore.
That's no fun
Exactly
Although in the section of the trailer that showcases the whole “foreground-background” mechanic, we see toad jump off of luigi’s head, so maybe you can toggle player collision and interaction, instead of it being absent entirely
I was just asking myself if/when Ceave would come back! I'm so happy! 🥰

Great analysis and I'm really happy to see you again!
YESSSSS CEAVE IS BACK! I watched every single one of your videos a year or so ago and I'm so happy to see you're still here!
For my 2 cents on the purple coin situation, I believe the coins are incremented in decimals to encourage players to collect entire groups of them. Since the purple coin bits are always placed in groups like regular coins, having them be in increments has the player want to get the whole batch of them, which might make sense if we assume these things have a bigger purpose than an extra plumber after you reach 100.
So happy to see you again! The way you play and analyze games has always captivated me! The "caterpillars" in the topiary at the beginning of the first stage are almost certainly supposed to be shaped like Wonder Seeds. And in Thing You Might Have Missed #10, the "arrow thingy" looks to be a crown to me.

The Super Mario Bros. Wonder trailer was such a fever dream it's bringing channels back to life!
I was just thinking about this channel awhile ago, it's great to see your wonderful content again! And I'm glad you took the time to explain the hardships of running a CZcams channel. As much of a dream job as it may seem to many viewers, it's good to hear from those most affected by the toxic environment CZcams is creating, and how it feels for you, as a content creator. It can be an eye-opening insight to the work a lot of people take for granted, and I hope over time the environment can be improved somehow, but maybe a less toxic CZcams is a fever dream even beyond Super Mario Bros. Wonder...
In the meantime though, I'm glad you have come up with a workable solution, and I look forward to seeing more of my favourite content again!
I’m so glad your back, I missed your videos and I think the channel split is a good idea for going forward, I’m looking forward to watching both your channels and having lots of fun
So good to have you back Ceave! Can't wait to see what you do next!
I think that the caterpillars in the 1-1 stage are actually wonder seeds. Since the hedges’ shapes more closely align with the wonder seeds.
JO CEAVE IS BACK! THIS REALLY IS IS A WONDER! Sometimes you can get immense joy even from Surprisingly Simple things. Leeeeet's do this
Hoo-ray!
This got my eyes burning, my identity has been shaped by Mario and by CZcamsrs like you; I’ve recently grown a bit disconnected from all the Mario and today I took a nostalgia trip, I am so glad you came back :)
I haven’t seen you in years. Nice to see you back and watched your SMM videos to help my levels
