Is it Possible to Beat New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe While Permanently Crouching?

- Can New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe be beaten while permanently holding down the crouch button? At first glance this might sound impossible since permanently crouching not only robs us the ability to walk, but makes tons of other mario obstacles a lot more complicated to platform through. But as it turns it actually is possible to beat New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe while permanently crouching. But what about permanently crouching, while also being mini mario? Is it possible to beat New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe in the absolute smallest way possible? In this video we are finally going to answer this eternal question!

So, I think being a lil bigger to be smaller faster is the answer. Because if we add up Mario’s size over those 7 levels, it is going to be larger than the 3 regular levels + a swimming level, thus being bigger to be smaller faster is the correct choice, also I think beating the first world, but then coming back to finish it as smallest Mario would have been a fair choice as well.
Yes
One route is possible while crouching, the other isn't. This shouldn't have to be such a complicated decision.
@@gengarzilla1685 Except the goal is to beat it while as small as possible, and being smaller faster is better at that than a smaller maximum size. Alternatively, the rules say you must have a mini mushroom if you can, and you have to be holding down unless entering pipes or moving on the map. Swimming is entirely valid under those rules.
You just said, the goal is to beat it while as small as possible. Crouch hopping is smaller, ergo crouch hopping is best. Why you all want to make this so needlessly convoluted is beyond me.
@@gengarzilla1685 Read the comment??? Both normal-crouching and normal-swimming aren't the smallest we can get, and if you're normal-crouching for a few levels, that's more time spent big, and therefore less small, than normal-swimming for 1 level. It's maths! Really!
To answer your philosophical question:
Becoming “bigger” is considered a failstate by the rules of the run. Letting go of crouch, eating a mushroom, were these instances to occur you would reset the run/level.
The conflict presented only really comes about because of how you’ve framed the purpose of the run: to beat the game as small as possible, which leaves room to interpret the goal as “average time spent small throughout the run,” rather than the more typical “avoiding ever becoming big” conceit that most challenge runs would follow.
The fact that becoming bigger than your beginning state is never required throughout the run if you take the desert path means that there’s never a point in which you have to intentionally invoke a failstate, which seems truer to the style of run.
Think about it in the context of other challenge runs:
In coiness, it pays to bite the bullet by collecting coins now to save coins later, because the end goal of the run is a cumulatively low score of coins overall, while in a damageless run, the individual instances in which the player takes damage are failstates, and since damage is never required to be taken, there’s no reason to take it intentionally.
It really depends on what kind of challenge run you want this to be. I personally agree most with the path you’ve taken, being the desert path. It’s treated more as a “failstate run,” rather than a “cumulative score” run.
exactly what i was thinking about this as well
huh
Well said. I agree.
If it would be a failstate run then technically you would fail at the start because you could make your mass 0 in an emulator and completely ruin the game, but it would still work. So yeah, you're right.
Or just get a mini and replay the game from the start like nothing happened.
You just wrote the most important essay of your life
ceave is just like "oh no, our run is failed"
"oh wait, i'm way too good at this for that"
hey brother MMMMMMMMMMMM BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
@@sxjxt Totally.
I believe I have a mathematical solution to Ceave’s philosophical dilemma near the beginning of the video.
Firstly, if we look at the individual level speed runs for all the levels Ceave would have to complete after 1-2 (aka from the world one fortress to the world one castle) it would take 275 second to complete. And if we compare that to the secret level, that only takes 74 seconds. Now if we take those times and convert them into frames using this game 60fps we can find that completing all of world one would take 16,500 frames, and completing the secret level would take 4,440 frames.
Secondly, if we look at the infographic Ceave provided, we can see that swimming Mario is around 22.22% bigger then crouching Mario. With this information we can take 22.22% of 4,440 (986.65) and add it to the total making 5,426.65 total bigness frames, as compared to the 16,500 of going the other route.
So therefore I believe taking the secret route would lead to a lesser total amount of bigness. The only disparity I can see here is that Ceave can’t play at world record pace while crouching, but that only proves my point further.
So hopefully I fully explained my thought process, and if there’s any reason you think I’m wrong, please let me know.
this is exactly what i was thinking

Mathematically Mario has been less big in the swim route, since he had to be sorta-big for a whole world otherwise, which really adds up, especially when considering the size difference between Mini Mario and sorta-big (crouching) Mario and the difference between sorta-big Mario and big (swimming) Mario. The mini to sorta-big is a larger difference.
YES
The important thing is being able to crouch. Underwater levels don't allow that in any size, so I'd scrap that route by default. World 1 isn't breaking our fundamental rules _that_ much.
There are less levels if ceave takes the underwater level, therefore the run is smaller. This is, in my opinion, much more optimal than the latter route.
If you average it out, I think the mi I mushroom is better
One thing I really like about Ceave when he does these challenge videos is how he presents the challenge and when hiccups occur during a run. As much as I love the challenge runs done by Nicobbq and Nathaniel Bandy, they just don't compare. When one of them hits a dead end, it's just "It's not possible to beat this game using this method, but let's see how many levels we can do". When Ceave hits a dead end, he starts contemplating the meaning of life and if it's worth it to put Mario through more of this challenge.
It’s all about presentation
I haven't even played any of these mario games, at least not even halfway serious. Yet I still enjoy watching (and of course listening) what shenanigans Ceave is about to do.

"Which of the two options is smaller?"
Take the time-weighted average height of Mario throughout each path. Multiply that by the length of each path, and then you will have a measurement of each path's "height time" (height x time). Whichever has the smaller "height time" is the correct path, in my opinion.
Tough question though, the nuance is more than I can fit in a reasonably-sized comment.
This isn't a question of math, but rather a question of Morality & Philosophy, figuring out if being small to become smaller is bigger than being big to be even smaller.

Hey Ceave remember when you said on the first two frames after you jump you go out of the crouching state... you can do that in the room with four poles of doom.
EXACTLY
Wait never mind apparently neither of us finished the video
That's what I was thinking
I think the best way to tell is to do a measurement for each state of mario, swimming, crouching, and mini crouching, then calculate how much bigger the swimming and crouching sprites are then the mini crouching mario, then apply that size difference to each stage and see which route has the lesser amount of "larger" mario (like if swimming mario Is twice the size of crouching mini mario then you'd do the 2x size times the 4 stages for an 8x waste size or something and then route from there)
I honestly felt more emotionally invested in this video than I have with any movie I've seen in the past decade, because of things like the 4 Ghost House Poles of Doom
I'm actually a *_little_* surprised over how intense this run got
I knew he was going to go back to it because it seemed really obvious. He already established that he can do a wall jump by jumping 2 frames after he hits he ground, so why wouldn’t he do it here?
I had assumed it wasn't possible with Mini Mario, because his demonstration was with a normal size Mario.
@@xian2themax thats what i was thinking
I'm sure you didn't watch much movies then lol
Here is how i would solve the dilemma:
Check how much bigger Mario is when swimming, complete the level as fast as possible and multiply the time it took by the increased-bigness-factor. Compare that to the time it takes to complete the route to the desert mini-mushroom. Taking the route with the over all lowest time will have the least big mario per time spent, giving you the lowest average in height for your run.
Agree
I think swimming would be shorter? because its such abig level amount difference
This is more or less what I had in mind, and if you were going to TAS this, you could even use the same idea to make meaningful penalties to the non-crouching animations in order to try to optimize it.
Essentially math... I went looking for this answer. Percentage is your answer
@@codahighland there is a small problem if you use this metric, if you stay minicrouching in a level for longer you reduce the mean height, so it looses sense in a way...

This is legitimately one of the most thrilling videos I’ve watched, period. I really felt your pain in trying to complete this challenge. Well done!
I think you should calculate a "bigness index": every pixel of height times secons played in this form. Now you can calculate if it is smaller to go big and then smaller sooner or not.
A simpler system would be staying as small as you can be at any given time, so swimming is a nono since you have the ability to be smaller at that time
Yeah basically an integral
@@HappyGingerWolf But is not playing smaller than being small? Then the swimming level is the way to go, because you finish the game faster, leading to a smaller run.

the second philosophical question is actually surprisingly simple: swimming is not crouching. therefore, it is not allowed
@Pragmaticist I'd agree with you if it were not possible to crouch underwater; however it is possible and thus swimming is as a bigger state than is achievable with water mechanics, making it not allowed.
@@zorinus3340 This is where the philosophical question gets even worse. Is this a "smallest" possible Mario run, or a permanently crouching Mario run? If it was a smallest possible Mario run, then the bigness of mario swimming might be worth the 3 less stages Mario is put through being big. HOWEVER, if the run is a permanently crouching run, then yes, due to crouching mechanics existing in water levels, it would not be allowed.

The route that goes through the water level would be smaller, because of this:
If you attach a value to crouching, say 0.5, and crouch through 7 levels, you get a value of 3.5. If you crouch through 3 levels and swim through 1, you get a value of 2.5. 2.5 is smaller than 3.5, therefore water level route is smaller. I'd saying doing an entire level swimming big doesn't matter, as how many times will you do the accidental bigness jumps and slide-jumps in 3 extra levels? And you even get the smallness faster.
That. Was a journey. I’m glad you’re back and making such emotional rollercoaster like content
Plot twist: He was going to do a normal crouching run but wiped his save file after realizing he needed the mini mushroom to get past the poles.
Day: *is bad
Ceave: loads up an video
Me: Holy Fuzzy
Very wholesome 👏
Its simple to solve the dilemma mathematically:
You spent one level being like 10% bigger. But that is way less than spending 8 levels or so at normal size.
Case closed.
But you didn't minimize size, you minimized size multiplied by time. You have to take that into account.
@@givrally7634 being slightly bigger for 1 level, which can be rushed in that form to some degree, is overall less time spent being bigger than being twice the size for 4 more levels (though that’s a rough guess its probably closer to being about the same)
@@Deadbait-qp8pl You'd be right, except that what you're saying is "you spend less time being bigger so overall you're smaller more". That's not minimizing size. That's minimizing the size over time, or in scientific terms, size multiplied by time.
When I say that you have to take it into account, that's what I mean.
The challenge is badly worded at its core, because "What is the smallest way to beat the game ?" assumes there exists a minimum size, namely a path for which the size function s is such that for any other path's size function f, at all times t, p(t) < f(t).
That's not a guarantee. I can find a dozen families of functions such that the first one in each family is always smaller than the rest of the families AND the other families, except the first one where there is no order relation.
Because "function is always smaller than or equal to other function" is an order relation (a function is always smaller or equal to itself, if f is smaller than g and g is smaller than h, then f is smaller than h, and if f is smaller or equal to g and g is smaller or equal to f then f and g have to be equal), but it's not a total one. There's no minimal function.
On the other hand, size multiplied by time, or the integral under the size function, has a minima. "Area of function is smaller than area of other function" is an order relation, because the above relation implies this one, but it has totality. The area is a real number, so if the areas are different, one of them has to be smaller. And because the size function is always strictly positive, you know it has a minimum. Is that a satisfying solution ? No, because we changed the rules to make sure we have a result, and we have to be aware of that.
Big brain time
If you're using time * size then you have to beat the game as fast as possible to minimise size. So a world record speed run could be smaller than ceave's run
CONGRATS ON 500K!
CONGRATULATIONS WITH YOUR 500K SUBSCRIBERS YOU EARNT IT :D
I actually have a Satisfye grip, it's soooo good. Show Ceave and your hands some love, get yourself one!
because he is approximately 25% bigger when you are swimming, that means that he should spend 4 times the amount of time going through the desert to get out as the water, but it takes 3 levels to get through the water and 7 levels through the desert 7 is not 4 times 3 or greater so going through the water is better because although the average size is increased, the TOTAL size is smaller
The motivation of this man has resonated through the screen to me
Congrats on your 500k! ♥️
