Schopenhauer: The Philosopher Who Knew Life’s Pain

- The amount of suffering in the world is vast, so observed Schopenhauer. Life is a constant striving, a relentless pursuit of desires and needs that keep appearing. So it’s no surprise that people label this philosopher ‘pessimistic’ and ‘dark.’ But his observations aren’t unfounded.

He was never a pessimist but a realist. One of my favourite quotes from him that I find absolutely correct is “Life swings like a pendulum backward and forward between pain and boredom.”
Damn, that's a good quote
An extraordinarily true statement, in my opinion. I've developed the sense of trying to balance the highs and lows to live my most fruitful life.
Pain yes, boredom never. I have faith in joy, to balance the pain, which leaves me in the centre (call it ‘the Middle Way’…), and if we can live out of our centre (heart, soul, spirit…) we live in peace; in love. This is the realism AS points towards.
I would say this outlook depends on the reality bubble you are encapsulated in 🫧
@adamelliott2302 you can actually only try but will never balance it. That's life, you can try to balance everything but you just cant.
I agree with Arthur Schopenhauer. Life just sucks. It's painful in many ways and he understood that. He didn't sugarcoat anything, he told it as it was. None of us asked to be here, and sometimes I wish I wasn't.
don't give up, experience the life as it is even with all that pain ;/
@@paulethwhy should we exactly? The temporary bits of happiness are few and far between. They only get our minds off of the harsh realities of life for a short time in the grand scheme of things.

I find his views give me a sense of relief from that pressure of "I should be more happy than I am. Something's wrong." Letting go of that pressure ends up making me more happy.

Can you pls elaborate a bit more?
@@yesvee7377 If I feel like I SHOULD be happy, it puts pressure on me to be happier, and makes me feel something's wrong if I'm not happy.

That feeling of relief from the pressure to feel happy feels pretty good.
@@QuestforaMeaningfulLife thanks for replying. Ok i get that if i accept not being happy is not a bad thing i'll release myself from the pressure of searching for happiness, but if not being happy then what's the purpose of life?
@@yesvee7377 Seems like a strange paradox that the less I try to be happy, the less I think about it and focus on it, the happier I tend to be.

Schopenhauer to me is a very practical philosopher. He tells it how it is and doesn't sugar coat life or take the leap of faith as so many other philosophers do. I live my life to try to minamlize pain while prolonging pleasure. For instance i don't waste any time in the morning checking my phone or socials as that creates anxiety but instead get too it right away, get my hiking gear on and take my dog for a long hike in. Contrast that to staying in bed and death scrolling for an hour. I try to live my life in that manner. Making pleasure efficiently attainable whilst minamlizing the pain.
I need to do that too. Thanks!
I do the opposite, life is boring, and pleasure doesnt give me a feeling of living, I despise pleasure. So I go out of my way to make life more dangerous for myself, more harder and painful, suffering and pain are tokens of existence, its a rule of reality. And I see nothing wrong with it.
@@Ootatobagpain and anxiety (sayfrom hard training and trying to achieve goals), leads to a much higher release of dopamine than safety and certainty. So that makes sense.
@@Ootatobag Oh yeah, sure you sawed off your fingers before typing that comment with your nose to make it "more harder and painful" too, right?
I have visited Schopenhauer's gravesite at the Frankfurter Hauptfriedhof (Frankfurt Main Cemetery) many times. It is nothing elaborate, compared with the great many memorials in the cemetery. It is an unassuming gravesite, marked off by small hedges and a large flat stone marker on which is written: Arthur Schopenhauer.
No dates are given on the limestone marker.
This man was the realist not the pessimist
If suffering outweighs pleasures than one could make the argument that this reality is actually "hell".

Thanks for sharing. I read Schope in my 20s and to say that the work resonated with me would be an understatement. But just the other day I made a pessimistic comment on an internet forum and I was accused of "basing my worldview off of rick and morty". The realist outlook characterized by Schope has endured for centuries (see Ecclesiastes in The Bible) yet THE MODERN AUDIENCE can only think in terms of the last few years.
I like to think Schopenhauer was as funny as Rick and Morty.
What did you say to garner that response?
@@simon_pender I replied with "Bingo!" to someone who posted: "If humanity and this world is the best we've got then everyone is beyond doomed."
Why do you expect people to know about 19th century German black pillers?
I love this philosophy ! Makes me feel good about feeling bad.
The human experience is marked by suffering due to the fact that we have the will, the ambition and the desire of an immortal, all knowing and all powerful being. Yet, we are mortal, know a small amount compared to everything that exists and have little power over the universe. No doubt dissapointment is a constant, and the strain caused by the disparity between desire and reality is so intense.
Overall, Schopenhaur seems to have found a great, if not the best, way to experience life. By reducing our desires to levels more easy to obtain we can reduce the forementioned strain of existence.
I really like his perspective. Would be nice to watch videos on a certain topic and the thoughts/differences between philosophers about it.
I like Albert Camus, Nietzsche, Carl Jung, Stoicism in general and Buddhism. Got plenty of books left to read!!
This has been my world view for the longest time. When I look at the world I see the infinite things that cause us pain and the very VERY few things that can actually bring people happiness or enjoyment in comparison.
When you consider conscious life on this planet as a whole which includes human and non-human animals, the conscious suffering which exists clearly outweighs the non-suffering hence why it should all end. For example, assuming that lions and gazelles are sentient beings which I believe they are who can suffer, a lion who experiences stomach pains because it has not eaten in days is suffering. A gazelle who runs in fear and then gets its neck snapped by a lion is suffering. That is just one example of suffering which exists every single day and the only way to stop it is to end their lives, peacefully if possible. So with all things considered, it makes logical sense to end all life on this planet in order to prevent more suffering.

When I first heard Schopenhauer was a "pessimist", I was quite surprised. I thought he was an optimist. I still believe that and I'm taken aback every time I hear it said he's a pessimist. Schopenhauer explains how life is, and what one can do to engineer one's life to make it successful, or perhaps, to more easily breeze through life. For me, what he says about life is true, I don't see that as pessimism, but fact. And his remedies are just common sense. Wisdom of Life is one of my favorite all time reads.
I am thrilled with today because I know it is one step closer to the change into another vehicle of life. This body is disintegrating, and that's a very hopeful and happy occurence. Chest pain and muscle weakness make me laugh. But then the laughing transforms the condition into "normal" status. I want to join my Mom and Dad. They know that and laugh with me.
Existing in this approach one day at a time makes life totally enjoyable. While making a meal, there is no guarantee I will be here to complete eating it. So I won't have to wash the dishes! Call me crazy, but know I am HAPPY with what is called living for today. Love. That's all I "feel."
Hmm. I like that.
I wish I felt that way. Hate and anger is probably 90% of my feelings nowadays.
@@joleaneshmoleane8358 Hi Katie! I am so glad to hear you express those qualities as "feelings!" That gives me a guarantee that it is NOT YOU! No. But I can't change any of that stuff. All I can change are the thoughts in my head that would create some awful feelings. So today I laugh at what the government gets away with, and I LOVE the deceased murder victim who is now in full happiness of the other world, whom I shall join one day. I wouldn’t call it pessimistic.
It’s more about no one wants to hear how the world truly is.
My earliest memories are from my kindergarten time.
I was put in a corner with funny little toys and told to wait till my family will pick me up in the afternoon.
I still can remember my thoughts like it was yesterday:
„So. That’s what they call life. It’s feeling alien. I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to spend my time playing with toys. Isn’t there anything else…“
Later in life I noticed the same. Family’s birthday party’s came and went. Same boring talks year after year. Birthday after birthday. People got older. Many of them died already.
No one of them has achieved anything. Can we achieve anything in a mortal life? Can we achieve anything in an eternal life. Which one would me more frightful? 🫣
What a mess. I will try my best. But I will be really happy when an end of this absurdity arrives. Maybe it will be accompanied by fear. But deep inside I know I will be the luckiest I have ever been.
Health is important to happy
Grateful ❤

Hi! I love your videos! Perhaps just a suggestion. Many people think that the first of four precepts of Buddhism is "Life is full of suffering" which is not actually an accurate translation of the original one (which is understandable because the word dukkha is not translatable). I just found out that the closer translation is "Life is full of dissatisfaction" and all of the sudden the rest of the Buddhist theory makes so much sense. Perhaps you may want to make a video or channel with this starting point?
Yes, suffering in the first noble truth mostly means stress
Dukkha: suffering, pain, dissatisfaction, not getting what you want, getting what you want and not liking it, rejection, depression, constipation, not having money, loosing your youth, no likes on social media, etc.
Translation is so important with many ancient languages like Pali and Sanskrit. Another common mistranslation is the word "nirvana" which doesn't mean enlightenment. It means "cessation" like when you extinguish the flame of a candle. It is the cessation of dissatisfaction or "dukkha."
I love your vídeos!
I find with this philosophy, one can be more free with this realization and acceptance
What really grinds my gears are people that discuss Life in a state of Nature as some kind of beautiful thing. When in reality my aphorism is much more accurate "Nature is a giant restaurant with babies on the menu". Or as Werner Herzog put it "A harmony of overwhelming and collective murder".
