What If The World is Actually a Prison? | The Philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer

  • What if this world is actually one giant prison? When the 19th-century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer observed the amount of pain that we experience during our lifetimes, he concluded that it’s not happiness and pleasure we’re after, but a reduction of the ongoing suffering that’s an inherent part of existence.
When we remove the veil of ignorance and behold the harsh reality we live in, we might start to question, as Schopenhauer does, the idea that, I quote, "this world is the successful work of an all-wise, all-good, and, at the same time, all-powerful Being." End quote. For Schopenhauer's view of the world is one of agony - devoid of divine grace - and it has much more in common with a “penal colony” than with the creation of a benevolent deity. Now, seeing the world as a prison sounds like a recipe for personal misery. Why not adopt a more positive, more hopeful perspective? Why look at it with such pessimism?
Well, Schopenhauer’s idea comes with a twist. Within his pessimistic worldview lies an outlook that could be very beneficial to humanity. Based on his essay On the Sufferings of the World, this video explores Schopenhauer’s pessimistic outlook on life and reveals a secret to be gained from it.

For people the problem is a law of diminishing returns - aging is inevitable the older you get and there's less and less to look forward to because that's how the physics of our world just are (or are designed). Plus, you can die from illness or a broken heart etc, but you can't gain anything from something positive. Like you can't gain an extra life or a decade for something good happening but you can loose your life when something bad happens. Our world and universe has entropy and decay. Everything is always sliding in that direction automatically. So to make anything happen, create, maintain, save is all a battle. It's intriguing that the universe is this way, surely it could have been in any number of configurations? (potentially worse, even). Good video

The body is a disposable vehicle to navigate this existence. Life is an experience, a window of opportunity to participate in a group setting with limited sensual perception and learn from it. Some of us are here to learn specific lessons, others are here just for the experience, usually called NPC's (non-participating characters).
The conscious mind does not die, it is energy therefore cannot be created nor destroyed, just converted from one form (body) to another. If you feel that your existence is a version of the movie 'Groundhog Day', maybe it is and you have been coming here repeatedly to learn a lesson you are unwilling to learn. Introspection is the key out of this dilemma. There are always clues to what you need to learn to move on. Have the courage to look for those clues, usually some continually recurring PIA situation, and embrace it for the experience itself.
There is no *exalting meaning of life* other than learning from the experience. Think about it...Life itself is a terminal condition, meaning it has a beginning and an end. It is designed that way purposefully because the lessons to be learned can be done so in a short period of time, *IF* you choose to do so.
You are young, only 17 and you have the chance to learn this epiphany at the beginning of your journey, whereas I have learned it near the end of mine. There is no right or wrong in learning it, no woulda, coulda, shoulda; no time limits...just a dedication to learn those lessons no matter how many lives (experiences) it takes to do so.

Bancel was born in France and earned master's degrees in engineering from CentraleSupélec of Paris-Saclay University (former École Centrale Paris) and the University of Minnesota.[1] He went on to earn an MBA from Harvard Business School.[3] Stéphane Bancel (born 1972) is a French billionaire businessman. He is the chief executive officer (CEO) and a 9% owner of Moderna, an American biotechnology company.
Bancel was a sales director at Eli Lilly and Company, eventually becoming head of operations for Belgium.[3] In 2007, he became CEO of French diagnostics company BioMérieux.[3]
In 2011, Bancel joined Moderna, becoming CEO. Stat news reported that Bancel led a highly secretive culture with little outside review of its science or research.[3]
In April 2020, with the Moderna share price rising on news of imminent phase 2 human trials for its potential COVID-19 vaccine, Bancel's stake of about 9% became worth over $1 billion

I've been to prison. The real deal. Minimum security chill compared to medium amd maximum. It was actually a relief from the outside, the stress of worrying over my case for way more years than I did. Got 3 squares, got to work outdoors in the sun. fresh air, managed to actually eat well considering it's prison, simple life, no hustle bustle stress, got fit, just behave and respect your fellow inmates. We learned collective compassion of our fellow sufferers in there better than we could on the outside. We are all just trying to get done and to a better place whether on the inside or the outside. It's all the same.

I could see that. On the outside it’s nothing but stress all the time to get up early and work yourself to death to get ahead and make something of yourself. There’s a long way to fall and nobody to blame but yourself if it doesn’t pan out. In incarceration there is nothing you can do about it so it’s probably a load off the mind in a way.

In terms of the real deal on the inside, it all depends of the security level. I was in Federal Prison Camp. That's a cake walk compared to medium or max and definitely better than county or state. It's basically 'prison light' but you can easily slide to medium if you fuck up and get a shot (violation) and worse, lose your good time. Bottom line is that you don't get too involved with anyone and mind your own business.

Hello, fellow-sufferers! You're still here. So am I. One day we won't be. And that's ok too.
We are existence. That is all we know. This cannot change. It will not always feel the same though.
If you want to transcend suffering, Eckhart Tolle is a very helpful person. Especially when it comes to turning off the noise within ourselves. Which does most of the heavy lifting for our daily suffering.
Suffering is the inner resistance to what is. Pain is a feeling. Suffering is a reaction. Oftentimes, pain creates suffering. We have little choice in that matter. It is only natural to resist something physically painful.
However, there is a difference between someone receiving a painful tattoo they have been looking forward to, and someone being tattooed against their will, as a means of torture. The tattoos could be identical. But the suffering is far worse for the one who resists it more.
I love you all. Resist as little as possible. And the suffering will follow.

We are forced to live out a life of work, most of us do jobs we despise just to get by and it is our burden until retirement. In fact the kids born after the year 2000 have opted out of the program. I always hear employers say the younger people today are lazy and dont want to work. The generation before them didnt buy into the 'American Dream' either and decided to *NOT* buy the big house, have the 2.3 kids and expensive cars that the marketers tell them they have to buy. Instead they are living in very small inexpensive apartments, working decent paying jobs with 'normal' hours and spending their money on vacations and travel.

Neil De Grass Tyson, said: "the purpose of life is to give it a purpose". Schopenhauer said to "show compassion to others". So one way we can give it purpose is by showing compassion to others, helping others cope with the shortcomings that life gives us. No matter who you are, we all suffer in one way or another many of the same tragedies. Another train of though is that this is a school where we learn by being exposed to everything that we see in order to be better beings wherever we come from and eventually return. So being compassionate to others seems like a logical thing to do in order to graduate from this school/ penitentiary of life.

These views have actually helped me a lot -- along with a mesh of other philosphers' views. So much bad shit is going on in life and there's no way to avoid dealing with it. What helps though is being able to see that good things are mostly a bonus -- and also a miracle. It's a miracle that I get to spend time with the people i love, even though things never go as expected. I'm a poor working class guy, but I live more comfortably than others.. Things can always be worse, although it's extremely sad how much suffering there is. I believe the only thing i can really do for others is to reduce theirs and my suffering.

I’m 17 right now and I feel like every year slowly gets more and more unbearable, life is built upon the fear of pain and how to escape it. But I like to try and think of it as a yin and yang, pain cannot exist without pleasure, you need to find a healthy balance to try and make it more bearable.
