How to Reduce the Pain of Life | Arthur Schopenhauer

  • The nineteenth-century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer observed that nature is driven by an all-encompassing force, which he called Will, or more specifically, the Will-To-Live. This force is unconscious, aimless, and blind, and gives rise to an insatiable striving within human beings. We live our lives grasping, craving, and attaching ourselves to external things, and we feed on other living organisms to perpetuate our own existence, all of which is a manifestation of Will.
Thus, the will lies at the root of suffering, as our never-ending hunger (and our inability to satiate it) results in an ongoing pursuit of pleasure that never, ever satisfies in the long run. To cope with the misery of life, Schopenhauer took the effort to construct a philosophy to help us attain a state of happiness, which may seem a bit strange as he’s such a pessimistic thinker. But similar to a philosopher and spiritual teacher that lived about 2,500 years ago named the Buddha, Schopenhauer rigorously examined and endured the illnesses of existence before he came up with a cure.
After his death, Schopenhauer left us with an unfinished manuscript titled “Die Kunst, glücklich zu sein,” which can be translated as “The art of being happy”, and contains fifty rules for life. This video is based on the fifty rules by Arthur Schopenhauer, and explores how we can reduce the pain of life.

A billionaire can use all kinds of technology and medical treatments to improve and prolong their life while poverty striken people might not even have access to drinkable water, let alone nutritious food.
It all sounds nice on paper. But it's way better to be both wealthy and healthy. You just have to not lose your head and use your wealth wisely. I guess many wealthy people feel miserable because some of them have not done anything to earn it, some have become wealthy at a very young age and some have traded success in all other areas of their life for wealth.
However, there's a bunch of people who still have managed to avoid these pitfalls and I'm sure they are wealthy, relatively healthy and satisfied with their lives.

But if that's not the case, we're at least given more opportunities to grow through adversity. In regards to this video, I must admit that there's much more to Schopenhauer's work that I'd like to cover and explore. It was quite difficult to cover his lessons on happiness in one video. If you're interested, I'd like to make more content about his philosophy (and my interpretations of it) in the near future. Just let me know!

To acheive the state called awakening, you need to synchronise your attention/consciousness to reallity completly, instead of being lost in your thoughts. That I didn't fulfill my purpose. Yet, I have created my work, my novels, short films etc, so the work exists. Because it is not enjoyed by the masses is out of my control. I still do it because I like to create yet it can be so very frustrating when you cannot find a wide audience when you know the work is good. It's the very thing this video speaks of. I'm trying to find simple joys in reading, listening to music, watching films, and most of all, spending time with my daughter, who has given me real purpose. Without her, I don't believe I would be alive, because I didn't have my head straight. Lost in the idea of failure. And drinking too much. A deadly combination. I've decluttered my life. I try to live as simply as I can. Never been materialistic thankfully. But I still need this reminder though. My biggest battles are within my own head. Peace of mind is all I seek now. Your video appeared when I need it most as currently under a third lockdown and starting feeling frustrated being indoors all of the time often in noisy environment. About happiness it's just a state of mind. Reminds me of quite I stuck in the wall. 'Happiness does not depend on what you have or who you are; solely relies on what you think.' Buddha.

“Indifference” - the keyword. The more I study psychology and philosophy, the more I become indifferent. The question is “good» it? Or ... Every time it seems that I find the answer, but more and more questions...

In general, it is good to be indifferent to things concerning your well-being, but it's not good when it comes to work and relationships. To succeed, you have to care, otherwise, there's no point in trying.

I haven't heard of this guy until today. I was researching existential boredom and possible solutions because a few hours ago I was feeling particularly interested in looking into the worthlessness of living and came upon a book of his, which, in just a couple sentences, explained exactly what my thoughts were on the idea of a purpose to life. He's the closest I have to a twin in terms of philosophy. Fascinating.

Even better video than I expected, it makes sense that reduction of pain by practicing moderation and striving to be responsible leads to a life with less suffering and therefore better than a life in which constantly seek out pleasure.
Basically never sacrifice moderation for a chance at extreme pleasure, as it will often disappoint or come at great cost.

Without emotions, how do you experience life in its fullness? You are specifically referring to negative emotions.
We live in duality. We need the contrast to know one from the other. The Yin and Yang of life
How do you see stars 🌟 if there is no nightfall? How do you know love? Until you experience the lack of it.
Without the full spectrum of negative and positive emotions, you cannot experience a full life.

I get what you’re saying that the pursuit of material gain isn’t fulfilling. But what is actually fulfilling is pursuing healthy and functional relationships between other humans. But that requires a lot of inner work. Also, while I do agree and it’s always been obvious to me that t he higher you go the longer you fall, I would still choose to live my life and have cool experiences and deal with the pain later because I’ve noticed that the pain of regret and lost potential is the worst pain there is (other than loneliness). I just don’t mind pain is a reality of life. People avoid it so hard and it’s understandable but the more you accept so called negative emotions without judgement, the easier they dissipate.

The video sounds like theyre avoiding things. They say that because you happy and rich that when its gone you wont be. But how do you know? Why cant i be happy when im poor and when im rich? If i lost it all and was still happy going forward doesnt that mean that i avoided pain anyways? Why does being rich and losing most or all of it have to be painful if i never became attached? Enjoying it for the moment it was.

healthy relationships are essential for me to have good (mental) health (thus it is also essential for consistent good phyical health). ugh.... it feels as if striving for healthy relationships are like striving for material gains, etc. Because for me they are not obtainable, and the "failure" during the pursuit is a big fall. But nonetheless i agree wth you that it is still worth it to pursue healthy functional meaningful relationships.

I think it's strange that we put so much value in pursuing happiness when it's not really a state you can live within and at best it's a fleeting thing. The more stable way of being is 'unhappiness' and living with that idea in mind really helps you to find peace in the world as it is. You can let go of the need for something so transient and perhaps even start to enjoy little things about daily life, if you're lucky enough go have some form of control over it. ✨

pain can be positive or negative, there is also happiness. pain can break you, make you suffer, and want to end this life. while happiness can encourage you and give you spirit, and motivation to keep on living. Any pain and happiness that is based on reality is positive and the other way around is negative
