I've just noticed I say at some point that Williams are still looking for their first win. Patrese of course won at Imola. I'm not reuploading the whole thing...
________
The teams head south to the dry, dusty heat of Mexico City for race number 6. Since the return of the Mexican Grand Prix, it's been won by Gerhard Berger for Benetton in 1986, Nigel Mansell for Williams in 1987, Alain Prost for McLaren in 1988 and Ayrton Senna for McLaren in 1989. All four could easily become the first to win it twice today, but nobody can knock Senna off the top of the standings.

For me the single most entertaining race in watching F1 for over 40 years. The BBC started the race coverage as highlights as usual but then James Hunt announced they were “dropping LIVE to the race now” and showed the last 10 laps or so. Absolutely mesmerizing and head spinning 😵💫. From the Mansell spin to the barge by Berger to the most manic chase I have ever seen by Mansell in full “red mist” mode. THAT overtake was absolutely insane and left me breathless!!
Me too! I still have the 1990 season on VHS tapes
This upload means a lot to me. Not just because when I see T&T in my feed, I am immediately compelled to watch, but that moment, when Mansell overtook Berger.....that is basically the genesis of my love for motorsport. It is a very vague memory (I was 5 years old) and that coupled with the fact this race was in Mexico, (I am sure I never seen it live, it must have been a re-run).....but the pictures and the words from Murray Walker, specifically the line "he is rocketing away from Berger, on the last lap in Mexico"..... As a young kid in Northern Ireland, I became an F1 fan and Mansell was by favourite driver (I'm sure if I was older it would have been Donnelly)....of course a few years later, when I was an Eddie Irvine fanatic, i cursed Mansell for taking off Eddie's front wing at Imola 95 which cost him a points finish ... swings and roundabouts haha.
I think you just unlocked a core memory for me too - which is mad, I remember the World Cup far more vividly but I clearly watched this Grand Prix.
As a Prost fan this race sits in at No. 2 in my favoutite F1 races of all time (behind Adelaide 1986). Thanks to the glories of CZcams I finally got to see the full race through one of the US broadcasters as BBC only showed highlights until about 10 laps from the end. The difference between Mansell and Prost's style was really highlighted in this race with Mansell "charging" to 2nd place while Prost qualified well behind him but drove "sedately" to the win. My feeling is that this was the race that Mansell realised that he wasn't quite on the same level.
Mansell is so box office, you can just imagine him driving like he has a knife between his teeth after that spin - you can see why the Tifosi loved him so much he exemplified Ferrari spirit
Engine noise. Glorious beautiful noises. I miss that. Great video. Great race. Looking forward to Paul Ricard
Jeez, movie sequels everywhere! SO damn glad nowadays it is completely different hahaha. :(
I vividly remember this one even though I was only 9 or 10 at the time. Epic race!
Interesting and entertaining work, a really exciting race awesomely presented. I thought at first you'd got the sound footage from a recording of a commentary by Prüller - he used to sometimes stay quiet for extended periods of time when he couldn't think of anything to say and had run out of anecdotes from the old days : )
Can't wait for the next one!
Anxiously waiting for Lleyton House wonder next race 😉
4:24 Poor Giacomelli, he seems to spend more time stood in front of the car than actually sat in it.
The ROAR
Without the spin, Mansell would not have to overtake Berger . Typical Mansell, complimented for heroics, which could be easily avoidable , if not making sily mistakes in the first place
Why didn't McLaren stop? Senna had 20 seconds in advantage at some point, plus the effect from fresh rubber would have easily negated all the lost time from a regular pit stop, wouldn't it?
I think his tyres were OK until he picked up a slow puncture late on, by which stage Ron thought it was worth the risk.
9:37 Not the first time Mansell had done this to Piquet, but perhaps this time his feint was inspired by Maradona v Brazil @ 6:43?
One of the best ever gps. Shame Prost won though!
The shame is that the director missed a,lot of the action.
Your title says "1990 Canadian Grand Prix".
Fixed, cheers
