1986 German Grand Prix - Turbos & Tantrums (reupload with stills)
*Recreated using stills from footage following FOM block*
The forests of Hockenheim will be playing host to the German Grand Prix for the forseeable future - much to the chagrin of all those who poured money into the renovation of the Nürburgring - and there are major developments afoot as some of the puzzle pieces for 1987 begin falling into place.
In the meantime, there's a race to run and Nigel Mansell will be looking to continue his great run and extend his lead over Prost, who will in turn want to recapture the initiative. Meanwhile, Senna, Piquet and Rosberg are all keen to get back to winning ways.

It's go time again for the F1 season and the sport returns to South Africa in the wake of the lifting of sanctions. F1 hasn't been to Kyalami since 1985, and the track has changed a lot in the meantime, so all bets are off: can Mansell get a winning start to the season in his new high-tech FW14B, or will the tried and tested McLaren come through? What about the radical new Ferrari F92A? Lots to...

Brilliant race for Larrousse, just as special as the Minardi double points at Silverstone the previous year. That 1990 car seemed quite decent. It always breezed pre-qualifying & Bernard got some strong performances from it. And the best was yet to come for them later this season!
IT’S TARQUINI!!
Booo Booo the Camel Lotus.
I think in a better car, Alan Jones would have been a regular point scorer. I don’t think he would have been winning races or championships, but I don’t think his skills had declined as much as the scoreboard indicated. Both those Haas Lola’s were dogs.
Piquet’s 120th GP win, wow.
It would be interesting if you did a special edition video for the 1984 Nürburgring Eröffnungsrennen (hopefully I didn't butcher it), where F1 legends past and present at the time competed in equal machinery. With your insight it sure will be extra interesting, though I don't know how easy it will be to find info about it as it was just an exhibition race
I did a little bit about it in the intro for thr 84 European GP - there's a few videos out there already and I'm not sure I have any major insights to add 😀
I must have totally missed this back in 1992 for whatever reason. As always, good to watch and loving the history updates beforehand for contextualisation.
I didn't want politics
Eh?
What the hell is this, how many f1 championships has "Liberal democracy" won?
Well, I haven't researched exactly what state the governments of Argentina and Brazil were in at the times that their drivers won titles but every other champion, and ALL constructors' champions, were definitely form western democracies. But also - I don't understand what your objection is here. I always start my videos with a quick roundup of world news for context, and most commenters seem to value that. If you don't, feel free to skip on.
IIRC Damon was basically chosen because Brabham couldn't find anyone else with backing at short notice and said "sod it, might as well just put a decent driver in the car"
BBC Wales went AWAY from this to cover live Glamorgan cricket(!?)(!?)(!?)
Good job, Andrea Moda was farcically run and operated from the start, no wonder they were booted out of Formula One for bringing the sport into disrepute.
Whoa, the more I hear about the mistreatment of Perry McCarthy by Andrea Moda, the more I see how much of a completely messed up world of Andrea Sasseti's was. In fact, I would compare both Sasseti's neglect of Perry to Helmut Marko neglecting the teammates of Max Verstappen and the juniors of the RB Driver Academy as both have a authoritarian/draconian dictatorship style of operating.
Marko never tried to kill or injure a driver because he didn't want them around however Compared to Sassetti Marko is an absolute saint
The book Flat out, flat broke on this subject is worth a read.
@@CasperEgas There's also the recent Andrea Moda documentary which Perry features on. Even in his own production Sassetti comes out looking incredibly bad
@@MrSniperfox29 where can you watch that?
@@CasperEgas IIRC it is on youtube somewhere
That Schumacher bloke's some rain master. In an inferior car, he almost made Mansell look amateurish.
Hooo you had me worried you couldn't post this week.
Just had a bit of a cold, which you can probably tell from my voice
@@TurbosTantrums yeah take care and keep up the good work
The first race where The Michael proved how good he was. Catching Mansell at 2 seconds a lap at one point.
He has some potential 🤔
There's a bit in the post-race conference where Mansell semi-jokingly says he thought Schumacher must have found a shortcut somewhere
Pole Position
Just thought I'd mention that Lotus's "team old boy" John Miles (seen at 07:55) was a former F1 driver as well as engineer. He was particularly involved in Lotus's experiments with a 4 wheel drive F1 car in 1969 & 1970.
See if you can find the book on the round the world flight. It was one of the first books I bought with my own money. I was 11 years old. Excellent book, and Rutan is a genius.
Wonderful Piquet's victory. Perfect strategy and speed .
Thank you mate, just what we’ve been waiting for, Great job and keep up the good work.
Do you have the 1986 German Grand Prix please? Can’t find it anywhere.
While the german handling of the Desaster at ramstein was not stellar it was mainly the americans fault. They organised the event. Including preparations for a worst case scenario. Or better the lack thereoff. Foreign vehicles were not alowed on that part of the base. So there were stopped at the gates for about half an hour. No first aid was administered because the americans used load and go tactics causing death and permanent damage that could have been prevented. The only real fault of the germans were the handling after the wounded reached the hospitals. They were simply overwelmed by the uncoordinated deliverys. All that changed a lot in future airshows. Unfortunatly it allmost allways takes a lot of lifes lost to affect change. At airshows. At sea (titanic). And at motorsports like f1 (imola 94).
Thanks for the extra information - as you say, safety regulations are usually written in blood
Poor Patrese. Personally I would’ve been Livid 😅
Thanks for another excellent video. I remember that World Cup fondly, bunked off from school early with my mates to watch Botham and the English, annihilate Australia at the SCG. 1 year later, Sir Shane of Warne plays his first year.

I miss the mixed engine 3.5 liter era
I actually like Detroit .. the cameras are close to the action .. watching cars zip around at 150+ mph for two hours non stop e.g. at Hockenheim is sterile and boring
1992 turbos were long gone.
Funny how Williams failed to mention what tactic they were using to justify giving Mansell the first stop. Other than getting Mansell in front obviously
"he thought Senna was letting him pass" - The biggest understatement in F1 History.
I don't know how Nigel's nose didn't grow three sizes and break the measuring device.
There was one Brazilian missing: Nelson Piquet.
Tarquini made history in this race, third best lap in race with the outdated fondmetal
!!!!!
Always a pleasure, another very interesting video - thank you!
A little remark regarding Johnny Herberts 1991 overall: He and Hakkinen used the 1991 overalls for the first four rounds of 1992. For the next race at Spain they will use the new overalls for the presentation of the new car and will drive the old car with the old overalls. The first time they actually use the new ones in action will be at San Marino.
Ah, there we are. Knew someone would know
When you do the 1998 season preview, if the fom allow you, can you do a mention of Dale Earnhardt's Daytona 500 win? It took him 20 years of try and frustration
Remind me when it gets a bit nearer!
@@TurbosTantrums all right
Ah, you missed the first Vulcan bomber Black Buck raid.
yes finally
The MP4/7 looked a generation behind the MP4/6. I remember The Michael not being impressed with Senna's perceived blocking
So fast I should be on pole!
Unfortunately you got a grid penalty
These cars like trucks hard to drive this was good race mansell battle with piqet first turn now different
So Patrick, we need to reshape the current car to meet the new regs, any suggestions? Patrick Head: Give me that sledgehammer.
AMAZING GUYS ❤
какие крутейшие обзорчики , спасибо за работу , жаль только что звука моторов несльішно, наверное банят за оригинальньій звук и коментаторов
The first race commentated on by Olav Mol in The Netherlands. He did so until two years ago.
Not only the traction control, but surely the Active suspension must've been a cataclysmic performance advantage here
You would think, but Mansell, Williams and Head were all saying in the media that it didn't make thst much difference.
@@TurbosTantrums They were probably right, as the laptimes from the McLaren of Berger tells a tale.
6:16 one of the best lines I've heard in these videos, absolute gold
CRICKET MENTIONED ❤ but not the massive controversy in the England semi-final?
Must admit I didn't realise how massive it was as I don't really follow cricket. Will mention it next time though
this race cemented Mansell as champion. Patrese had dominated Mexico in 91 and now he was nowhere with the active car
Rarely seen such a big change between teammates as that from the Williams duo in 1991 to 92
