  • Back to Europe as the World Cup winds up in Italy, and for what looks like the last race at Paul Ricard, at least for the time being, with a new circuit planned for use in the French Grand Prix from 1991 onwards. Alain Prost will be hoping the momentum from his Mexican win carries on. Home soil has been a happy hunting ground for Prost - he took his maiden win at Dijon in 1981, and won at Paul Ricard in 1983, 87, 88 and 89, and when he didn't win he was usually on the podium. But there are plenty of people wanting to crash the party: Williams with their French Renault engines, Senna wanting to defend his championship lead, Berger still waiting to open his McLaren account, Mansell likewise his for Ferrari, and the Benettons are always loitering just behind waiting for one of the big six to slip up...

What a performance by Capelli and the Leyton House. Clearly their crowning achievement. An impressive effort out of that first finicky Newey chassis and a great drive. A shame what this performance led to for his career. He never got a fair shake.

Leyton House's golden moment perhaps. Shame they couldn't get the win but to say Capelli had a stormer is putting it mildly.

After a performance like that, surely one of the big boys will be coming in for him soon.

I liked Prost but I really wanted Capelli to hang on for this victory. Still, his talent is clear, so that first win will happen for him one day...

I’ve gone back to this race a few times in the last year or so. I think it’s one of the most enjoyable F1 races in the last 40 years. So much happened!
These have been fantastic to listen to while I’m either illustrating my F1 art or building models. Jordan 191 on the bench currently. Keep ‘em coming! ❤🙌💥😎🏁

This race was the major factor in Ferrari signing Capelli in 91 as Prost replacement for the 92 season and like Fisischella in 09, he failed terribly.
I cringe every time I see Martin Donnelly, of course knowing what's about to come....poor fella!

Aarghh!! That last-minute goal of David Platt is still the biggest collective sports-related trauma ever over here in Belgium 😊

My condolences - if it's any consolation, Chris Waddle putting it in Row Z is exactly the same here. That and Gareth Southgate at Euro 96...

Awesome video!! One note: Ivan Capelli led a "lap" at the 1988 Japan GP at Suzuka. Admittedly, I think it was because Prost missed a shift leaving the Chicane and Ivan beat him to the line but Prost re-took the lead before the 1st corner.

Argentina played dirty that tournament. Anytime they faced a good team, they played ultra-defensively because they knew they had a weapon of a shot stopper in Goycocheya.
