For sure when you guys were kids your report cards would have said that you are willing to try new things, perseveres, and works well with others. This was a very enjoyable video. For sure the overdrive will work the next time.
Wow, I did not realize how many different parts are in those overdrives, and how complicated they are!! Masterfully engineered, however. But so so complicated compared to the American Borg-Warner overdrives.
I loved this episode... true fault finding old style and managed to explain to me so much about how my overdrive might work... my gearbox is coming out this winter to try and solve the non overdrive
Thats a huge dig, dig and find methodology. Glad you found some faults, lets hope thats all of the problem.
I had that exact same problem when I rebuilt my OD. I would suggest cleaning the surface or the brake-like lining that was seized. Twice since I put it back together I have had the operating valve pressure relief hole get clogged with a very small pc of that brake lining material. I think when you pound it apart there are probably some pcs that are not attached so well anymore and they later detach and have the chance of plugging your pressure bleed off hole. I would love to put a new sliding clutch in, but not available anymore.
Now that is true detective work, good job guys sticking with it.

Isn't it fascinating what went into those transmissions to get them to do what they did?
When you got it un-seized, why not clean the brake surfaces with very fine abrasives? Just a curious question. You two have the big brains.
What do you think bound the brake layers together? Just spring pressure and age, without being run?
Quite profound to think that the new electric motors won’t require any of this gorgeous and very complicated engineering. In 50 years time there won’t be anyone getting trained to do this type of work..
I’m suspicious that there was no circulation of the new pink oil from the gearbox into the overdrive ? When you took out the filter and then split it all apart later there was some dirty crud and traditional coloured gear oil but no evidence of clean new oil ?
Or are the overdrive and gearbox completely separate units ?
Hi John, the oil we are using isn’t pink…just 30W non detergent.
