J-Type Overdrive Overhauling - Part 1 - Disassembling and Assessing

  • This J-Type overdrive is making crunchy noises after being forced in reverse while engaged. That is what I've been told so let's dig in and see what the damage is.

    If you were to get an MRI done on your brain - it would show thousands of schematic drawings of how parts go together on Triumph engines, transmissions, overdrives etc. it amazes me that you can toss all those complicated parts into a coffee can and remember exactly where and how everything goes back together. I salute you for your photographic memory and your mechanical ability. What a great Triumph mechanic you are - keep the videos coming!

      LOL, as you've already seen, I used the manual to help me assemble it later. I use diagrams all the time (or my old videos LOL) I don't have everything in my brain, I am not that smart, but thanks!

    This I will hope , will be your very best set of "how to repair the X on a Triumph TR6" videos. Glad that the "How to repair the 'A ' type overdrive " is no longer going to be the only Triumph overdrive repair video. Remember most amateur mechanics , as I am myself , understand engines much better than (but could not make a living at it) transmissions and their overdrives. This is generous of you, thank you so much!

    Very interesting video, Ive never seen the insides of an overdrive before,
    I made a guess that you would find the problem in the gearbox straight after reading "being forced in reverse" not that I know anything about these things but I ended up buying my Spitfire precisely because of a similar problem.
    It was my mates car (British english mate is friend) and his clutch had stuck to the flywheel and in an attempt to free it he had it towed and dumped it into reverse shearing off the teeth on layshaft (the clutch was still stuck though). I needed a car at the time as my current car was due to go to the scrap heap after banger racing!! My mate said if you can fix it then you can use it and if you like it you can buy it. So my first job was to take the gearbox out. My brother in law had a spare one and we had the layshafts swaped over by a friendly neighbour mechanic and I ended up buying the car! Happy memories

      Well, normally being forced in reverse is what causes the unidirectional clutch to fail. That is why I dug into the overdrive first. But I was going to end up taking it apart and cleaning it even if I dug in the transmission first

    Thanks very much for this. It will prove helpful for me as I have just fitted a Volvo gearbox with a J type overdrive in my 32 ford. The Overdrive is identical. I want to check and clean the filters so now I know where I need to look. Mart in England.

    usually all the garbage in the OD is from the gear box and you end up changing OD bearings as well just because they have been running in dirty oil.

    I have worked on a friends j type with the complaint of it sticking in overdrive after about 15 minutes of operation. If left to cool down it will come out of od on its own. I duplicated the problem by removing the solenoid, attaching it to a battery and let it sit for 15 minutes or so. The solenoid gets pretty hot on its own and as it got above 175 deg f it no longer relaxed. I removed the clip from the end of the valve, replaced the internal o rings, cleaned everything and put it back together. No help! I took it apart again and stretched the spring and reassembled it. Fixed!! I fixed a second solenoid the same way.

    I am going to change my bearings so this is very useful. How did you seoerate the overdrive unit from the gearbox? I have undone the bolts but it will not separate

      Probably the gasket is holding it. You might need to tap it gently here and there. Also try inserting a putty knife in the split and drag it around. But be careful not to scratch the surface
