    Elin - you are a walking, talking encyclopedia of knowledge on all the mechanical operational aspects of Triumphs. You are simply amazing. It’s like you are a Triumph specialist teleported from the past to our present day. Keep up the great work! Love your videos.

    Elin, I wouldn’t normally have the patience to watch you dismantle a complete overdrive but for some reason this episode was quite captivating. I think it’s because I admire your courage and confidence in yourself enough to take on these terrifyingly complicated tasks! Big respect to you my friend 🙏

    Thanks for another great video Elin. Your mechanical talents are amazing, but I must also complement you on your communication skills. Even though English is your second language (maybe it is your third or fourth!), you have the ability to express yourself with a level of clarity and fluency that many of us who were born to the language could not equal.

    Thanks for the video. I'm about to tear mine apart - 1969 TR4A. I've got a friend with skills and parts. So we'll see what he has to say.

    I'm actually amazed that you can get as many replacement parts for these cars as you do. In this case it looks like you have a challenge ahead. Luckily my old TR4 didn't have an overdrive. That overdrive must have made a horrible noise when it decided to self-destruct. :-(

    Just finished similar job on my Volvo 1800 gearbox and Type D overdrive. Nothing as bad on the OD as you found, in fact just O rings as it has been sitting 20 years. Gearbox had a similar adjacent pair of teeth missing from the idler’s second gear.
    I will say working on the transmission is quite therapeutic replacing everything that wears, I highly recommend it, usually just a few special tools necessary and most if not all can be fabricated. Interesting to see the differences between these two ODs as I’m hoping to find a TR4 or 4a for my next project.
    As for the 1/4” lock washers on the piston retaining bridges, I bought a bag of 50 of them to justify the cost of shipping from an aviation parts supplier in the US p/n MS9276-10 KEY WASHER and although there is a supplier in Ontario if you just need another 4 or 8 let me know I’m in Vancouver and can just drop them in the mail.

    That's quite a lot of damage... maybe sell to the owner a spare gearbox from your work parts collection, or perhaps Cheftush's friend Les has a spare unit from one of his abandoned TR6s !

    • @cheftush
      @cheftush Před 2 lety

      Lol…then that would take away from Elin’s TR6 when he inherits it from Les 😉

    Is this the same trans/overdrive as my 64' Healey 3000 ?

  • @MrWaalkman
    @MrWaalkman Před 2 lety +1

    I see that you learned from the last time you took the bolts out to start with the short ones first. I only knew this because of your earlier video. :)
    Not that it matters but I can't help but wonder what Triumph was thinking when they came up with their design for their overdrive. Incredibly complex compared to a Borg-Warner R10 or R11. And the Borg-Warner has the advantage of working in any car that has one. Basically there is no "Make" or "Model" to them. I could be wrong, but I think that one from a Cord in the 30's should work on a Ford from the 70's (my '66 Impala had one from a Chevy, a Ford, and a Chrysler).
    Again, it doesn't matter nor help here but it is a head scratcher.

      Healeys have the same overdrive. It seems to have been a BMC decision to use them where ever they could.

    It doesn’t look like there is much worth saving in that one unless you are able ti find a useful annulus and planetary gear assembly for next to nothing. The oil pump is kind of questionable too. It’s a real shame isn’t it?

    Do u think that shop cut corners. My friend. Took his mustang got to a shop and he had to take the shop to court because that gave him a damaged transmission instead to rip him off it was the 2nd shop that discovered the sketchy Actions of the first shop

    • @RustyBeauties
      @RustyBeauties  Před 2 lety +3

      No, I don't think they did it on purpose. I think they forgot to install the trust washer inside the planet carrier and left a huge amount of play, which lead to to all the damages inside
