    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
    Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
    To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
    To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
    For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

      @MrPatrickbuit Před 3 lety +102

      A problem with a lot of the box art legendaries like Palkia, Dialga, Zekrom, Reshiram, Rayquaza, Kyurem is their speed tier. They're almost always base 90 and rarely base 100. That means that Garchomp at base 102 can outspeed it, which gives it a very serious function in the ubers metagame of those older generations.

      @@MrPatrickbuit Garchomp's natural bulk also lets it eat a Swords Danced Rayquaza E-Speed and not die to weak Ice Beams in a single hit. Also, until Mence got mega evolution, it was kinda part of the supporting cast next to Rayquaza as it's basically MiniQuaza with a little more speed (each beating up and/or cleaning up stuff that can take one of their beatings but not both). Playing against it in 4th gen OU was always interesting and I initially dismissed it as an Uber candidate though that could be because I was most of the time able to deal with it with stuff that was basically mandatory or you lose which in retrospect isn't healthy. It was a similar case to Chomp minus the Sand Veil miss hax.

    • @ShiningJudgment666
      @ShiningJudgment666 Před 3 lety +27

      @@coin4898 Hard to say. Garchomp's never been below OU. Hydreigon's either been OU or been able to carve out a niche in OU even when it's been UU. Dragonite's slow, but really good with Multiscale and solid overall bulk. Haxorus is a wrecking ball but held back by its awkward speed tier, its frailty and somewhat lacking movepool in comparison. It can 2HKO even resists such as Skarmory with boosted Outrages though so that's something. The statistics seem clear that Garchomp is the best of that little bunch since it's got a really good mix of power, speed and bulk and a good enough movepool.

    • @jw-ws8dz
      @jw-ws8dz Před 3 lety +5

      @@coin4898 it's not enough to consider overall viability of a pokemon. Garchomp, hydreigon, and dragonite all excel at different things, so just because garchomp has historically been more viable doesn't mean it's a better choice for your team. In terms of tanking hits, dragonite is better with its superior overall bulk and multiscale. Hydreigon offers defog support, which may be essential for your team if you're running pokemon 4x weak to rocks (like volcarona). Haxorus is completely outclassed by garchomp, unfortunately, because they fulfill sort of similar niches (except garchomp is much more versatile) and garchomp does almost everything haxorus does better (except maybe choice band wallbreaking).

It gave Dragons another weakness, and it strengthened both the Steal Type and Poison Type, both were in desperate need of an attack buff, especially Poison since it was only super effective against grass. Fighting and Dark were both strong types with only 2 weaknesses, and Fighting types were extremely powerful (especially in gen 5). One of the things that I find funny is at the time of its introduction Garchomp had the lowest attacking stats of any pseudo-legendary yet. However its stats are so balanced and its typing is so good that it is still arguably the strongest one to date! Garchomp is the epitome of perfect Pokemon design. In fact looking at the pseudo-legendary Pokemon after it which are kinda more defensive with more even stat distribution, maybe that was intentional as to not break the game again!

    • @hoanganphanle
      @hoanganphanle Před 2 lety +15

      I know I'm 2-year too late, but that "lowest" attacking stat thing can be deceiving. Unlike Salamence, Metagross, Tyranitar and Dragonite at that point, Garchomp had access to Sword Dance, which instantly boosts its attack to ubiquitous level and outclasses Choice Band, while TyTar, Mence and Dnite had to content with Dragon Dance, and Metagross only had Bulk Up iirc, and while the extra boosts to other stats is nice, most of them would just rather run Choice Band anyway. This made it so that while Garchomp had the lowest base attack, its damage output is exponentially higher than those 4

Gamefreak made this pokemon the strongest pokemon on the champion's team for the game, made an amazing visual design, and gave it pretty great stats and a high level evolution. Considering Garchomp is probably the strongest non-legendary pokemon in gen IV, and gamefreak designed this pokemon with the goal of making it a monster, I'd say they did a pretty good job with it.

    Finally Sun and Moon...
    At first, Garchomp's usage fell once Gen 7 rolled around. The tier just gained 4 dangerous new Fairy types with the tapus, with Bulu in particular immune to Garchomp's Dragon STAB and halving the power of its STAB Earthquake. On top of that, Zygarde had gained Thousand Arrows, a Ground STAB that hit Flying types and Levitating Pokemon neutrally, and for a long time was considered the superior Ground / Dragon type. But over time, its usage began to pick up as people saw what it bought to the table compared to Zygarde. With a set of Stealth Rock, Swords Dance, Earthquake and Stone Edge with a Rockium Z, it could set Stealth Rock and beat just about every Rapid Spinner and Defogger in OU. A +2 Earthquake would OHKO Mega Sableye and Tapu Fini if they ran a specially defensive spread, while a boosted Stone Edge powered up into Continental Crush would take out Gliscor, offensive Landorus-T and Celesteela. It wouldn't sweep, but that wasn't the point: it was meant to smash huge holes in the opposing team to be exploited by teammates like Mega Lopunny, Ash-Greninja and Volcarona. If someone else was using the Z move, its old Tank Chomp set was still a solid choice. Once Zygarde was banned, its usage rose even higher, and by the end of the generation Garchomp was considered A Rank on the viability rankings.
    Mega Garchomp had life even harder in Sun and Moon. It usually ran a mixed offensive set with Stealth Rock set designed to lure regular Garchomp's checks and counters. Tangrowth, Celesteela, Skarmory and Tapu Bulu all got scorched by Fire Blast, while Landorus-T and Gliscor did not appreciate a Draco Meteor at all. It could also run a Swords Dance set that could eviscerate defensive teams, especially with Sandstorm support. So what was the problem? You only get one mega, and it was hard to justify using Garchomp when you had mega Mawile and Medicham's sheer brute force, Sableye and Diancie's Magic Bounce hazard control, Swampert's ability to sweep in Rain or the defensive utility of Mega Sableye, Venusaur and Aggron. While Mega Garchomp certainly wasn't bad, there wasn't much reason to use it, so it finished in B-.
    In VGC 2017 Garchomp had a strong niche as a fast offensive threat. However, it had fallen from its glory days, as Intimidate was still very common and as with OU it now had 4 threatening new Fairy types to contend with. Luckily Tapu Bulu was pretty niche, so its Earthquakes would rarely be weakened by Grassy Terrain. It almost never ran its Dragon STAB anymore, as physical Dragon types have a hard time in VGC anyway due to Outrage being unreliable and Dragon Claw being weak. Groundium Z was its favourite item, giving it a one time workaround to Earthquake hitting its teammate. While it wasn't a staple, Garchomp still saw a good amount of usage, coming 2nd at worlds in the Masters division at the hands of Australia's Sam Pandelis and 7th at the hands of El Salvador's Rene Alvarenga. In Seniors it made 7th at the hands of Japan's Izumi Motoe. Finally in Juniors it managed to grab 1st place at the hands of Australia's Nicolas Kan. His actually ran an Assault Vest set, with Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Poison Jab and Brick Break. Singapore's Corey Yuen took it to 6th place with a Choice Scarf set as well. However, once 2018 rolled around, Landorus-T came back and made Garchomp more or less obsolete. And then 2019 came with Groudon, and come the ultra series, Primal Groudon, so nobody used Garchomp then.

      So what about Garchomp in Gen 8, seeing that it came back through the Crown Tundra dlc? Only noticeable change is the new move Scale Shot, it's okay but the damage at least in my experience is inconsistent. I know Landorus is still around in VGC but I do know that Garchomp can be both a good dynamax pokemon due to both STABs will increase its durability, they hit as hard as Z Crystals and it becomes a lot bulkier with it's hp doubled but also a non-dynamax pokemon since it can operate without dynamax

    • @lucifermorningstar2766
      @lucifermorningstar2766 Před 3 lety +3

      @@ryanphan6134 I dunno about vgc but in singles, it is arguably the most dangerous pokemon in the tier. As usual, Zygarde overshadowed it when the dlc dropped but after it was banned, Garchomp was and is still on the road to be the second most used pokemon. Scale shot might not be much but it is a devastating move as Chomp can turn its wall breaking power to sweeping power but due to the inconsistency, it is usually best used as a late game cleaner, or to harass Landorus Therian attemtping to intimidate it. Rillaboom is a major thorn it Garchomp's side but depending on both their sets, they have a love and hate relationship with each other

      Was decent in Gen 3 with its only big counters where Tyranitar,Toxix users, hail/sandstorm users, Will-O-Wisp users, leech seed users, and Spike users. It was mostly used in Ubers and NU and for it to be fully effective it needed support Pokemon. Gen 4 same as Gen 3 and the only thing new is Stone Edge which is another counter to it. Gen 4 was used mostly VGC12 and Ubers due to wonder guard being a decent ability and NU it used used as a baton pass user. Gen 5 it went from NU to PU (lowest Smogon Tier) and use less often, from the looks of it was no longer used in Ubers. Overall at first it was a decent counter against that where not Ghost-, Fire-, Rock-, Flying-, and Dark-type attacks or status/weather effects and was the embodiment of high-risk high reward but if properly used right or you could get rid of its counters in battle it was unstoppable.
