Sandra Huller deserves the win. She was so effortless in her character, didn’t even feel like acting.
im with you!
My too n
My pick too
Da’Vine Joy Randolph was such a warm presence in The Holdovers. Her performance was a really pleasant surprise, it’s very authentic and she plays so well with Paul Giamatti. Not that I care about the Oscars either but if we’re talking great performances, hers was definitely one of them. Also, very happy for Christopher Nolan I think the recognition is well overdue.
Glad to hear someone else disagree with America Ferrera's nomination. Nominating someone for a message rather than a performance is going backwards, not forwards, in my opinion. Great takes and commentary, as always.
Peter Finch won Best Actor Oscar for Network for 15 minutes of screentime almost ENTIRELY devoted to message....this is nothing new. 🙂
The message wasn't even clear. That movie is very overrated.
@@geoffreygershon It is kind of new -- Finch gave a legendary performance in Network, while Ferrera was just kind of there for the most part. And to be clear, I like America Fererra. I'm just scratching my head over her nomination for that role. Seems like a single scene nomination. Of course, I thought the movie sucked, so that might factor in.
Thank you for giving Cillian his flowers. He gave the best lead performance last year.
I agree. It's Nolan's time and he's deserving of an Oscar
It's his time. But it should really be Yorgos
Nah he is overrated af, Oppenheimer was mediocre. Yorgos and Payne are waay better directors
@@bat1579yet there's people that disagree with you, and that's ok
@@bat1579Nolan is a little overrated, but Oppenheimer is not mediocre. It’s definitely a good, if not great film.
@@bat1579If anything, Yorgos is far more overrated though. All he does is make lowbrow art house dramas now. Loved him when he KotSD, after that, he's been pretty outside of his bubble
I think you should watch American Fiction. I think it actually pokes a lot of fun at the pandering of Hollywood and the pandering of the media, so it's pretty brave in that respect AND it's a great movie.
I think American Fiction was definitely the funniest movie of the year. It was very good, liked it as much as Holdovers.
Mark Ruffalo made me laugh harder than any other performer in 2023
Yeah, I liked his character, he was so aggravated by her and had great lines and expressions.
agree. i thought he was absolutely amazing in that role.
Same here. His character is absolutely essential in getting Bella where she needed to go to develop into the mature adult she became. And Ruffalo was perfect in how he pushed back against her erratic and evolving behavior.
He made me laugh harder than any other performer in 2023 because of his awful performance, especially the ridiculous accent, in All the Light We Cannot See. Seriously. And I am a big Mark Ruffalo fan.
@@dashx1103 I thought it was genuinely great 😂
I enjoyed Past Lives very much.
Carrie Mulligan is often the best part of any movie she's in
Really? I actually thought she was one of the weakest aspects of Drive and The Great Gatsby
Carey Mulligan playing Carey Mulligan again.
Yes. She’s absolutely transcendent in Maestro.
The Great Gatsby is easily the biggest exception@@dankairgadam8841
You need to see more movies.
The Zone of Interest is easily my favorite of the nominations and of the year in general. Such a powerful experience that I would definitely let sweep most of the awards if I was in charge.
I’m honestly baffled at the good reviews for Zone of Interest…
@@123rockfan It wasn't for you and that's ok
@@123rockfan It wasn't formally rigorous enough, that's true. I think it was a failure. On the other hand, I'm appalled about some negative reviews which were negative for the wrong reason.
need to see it!!
It's just holocaust porn!
The Zone Of Interest is masterful, see it when you can. Definitely my favorite of the year
Completely agree! Zone of interest has been snubbed by deepfocuslens :(
Cate Blanchett getting robbed last year was the wake-up call for me.
Michelle Yeoh's performance deserved to win.
The physicality, humor, raw emotion.
Blanchett had won already twice. She is well represented by the academy.
@@HeelPower200 Awards should be based on performances and not some narratives. Blanchett probably gave one of the best performance of all times in TAR. Despite oscars her performance will have longevity same can't be said about Michelle Yeoh as she was a diversity pick.
@@rics1883 calling it a diversity pick is just ignorant. imo cate's performance is miles better, but EEAAO was bound to win everything because of all of the momentum it had
@@cheerios-9464Yeoh had strongest narrative, being 1st Asian to win best actress category after Oscars have been known for snubbing WOC performances. It was too strong to ignore for voters, most of them deliberately voted against Blanchett. I don’t have qualms about Yeoh winning but this is the high time we recognise, Oscars are not arbiter of quality or merit anymore especially current landscape.
@@rics1883 Michelle Yeoh has been around for ages being amazing with what few dramatic roles she's been able to get outside of martial arts movies. just because you weren't paying attention, doesn't mean it wasn't happening. what a horrible take.
Interested to hear what you think of poor things if you’ve seen it a second time. I felt the same way that you did the first time round, about the third act, not quite living up to the rest of the brilliance of the film, but the second time round it definitely worked so much better for me.
Wow, thanks for doing this video! I know you dislike discussing the Academy Awards but appreciate the thought and effort you put towards this as all your videos! Great work!
What a great find, happening upon your channel! I feel like an art student across from a friend at a cafe on the left bank in Paris. Great stuff.
the thing is... Cillian carries the entire movie. The movie does not work without him. Giamatti is equally as talented, but we've seen him do something like this before. Affable loser? Check, check, CHECK. And Oppenheimer is SO long, imagine carrying that intensity in just your eyes for THREE HOURS.
agreed
He had an eye job for this. So they should give the award to his plastic surgeon.
@@deepfocuslensPlease Maggie watch and review Ship of Theseus(2012,India) available on prime video. It's a very philosophical movie about the meaning of life.
I love how dismissive you are about
America Ferrera's speech. Barbie was good when it tried to be light and funny, but annoying as hell when it tried to be serious.
Yeah, that whole speech about what it’s like to be a woman just describes what it’s like to be human.
@@mabusestestamentthat’s exactly what I thought. I saw what they were going for but was actually surprised how weak that part was, not to mention obvious and lame. I could write that exact same speech but for men, or for minorities, young people, middle aged, modern life, etc.
I’m not necessarily the audience for Barbie, although I did enjoy it and was impressed by the production quality. But it was about how amazing women are but also simultaneously making them frustrated victims. Which I guess is the point but the point was a bit lost to make women look like victims when it’s Margot Robbie living a dream life.
@@Davidsworldtravelsyou articulated this very well. Barbie is ultimately the story of a powerful marketing campaign. The production design is amazing, the script, not so much.
Love your honesty! I’m so glad I found this channel!!! These are great predictions.
My mother was visiting my sister in Brooklyn around 2012 and they ran into Paul Giamatti and his wife. My mother said he was very friendly, much taller than he appears on screen, and quite handsome. Giamatti FTW
Best live action short - "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar". On top of being the only one anyone has seen, it's the "We're sorry we didn't like Asteroid City" award.
Henry Sugar is one of Anderson’s best works, it’s very enjoyable and also technically impressive. Probably the closest he’s come to recreating the magic in Grand Budapest imo.
To be fair, I don’t think Wes really tries to get recognition from the academy
@@bencarlson4300 I understand it's the first of a series of Roald Dahl short films Anderson will be adapting for Netflix.
@@allenrubinstein3696 The others are not as good, but I would still recommend them, especially The Swan
Idk I felt that mark ruffalo fit the world of poor thing’s perfectly. A little over the top and strange. Every line he had made me laugh to
you really ave a good handle on film and awards season
great job!
love your honesty!!
Maybe it’s just me being biased but I really loved The Zone of Interest making it my favorite film of the year and probably of the decade so far.
So yea, I would pick The Zone of Interest for every category lol. Especially sound and best original score
The sound design was truly mesmerizing.
I appreciate the honesty
I really hope poor things walks away with a good amount of awards. It really was one of those movies that kind of changed my outlook on life.
It was a great film
Love the honesty in this video. Hard to find that on this topic.
and i mostly mean how most channels tiptoe around the politics. I completely agree with you, it's all silly let's just call it for what it is.
Right cause everyone who has a different opinion than hers is just completely lying about their opinions
@@lenflakisinski6260 Nobody said that. We just appreciate her transparency on the topic.
@@grant2707 His point is, her willingness to be controversial in her takes doesnt make them suddenly more honest and valuable. If anything I feel like she's far too much of a contrarian for her own good, and I think it blinds her to some genuinely good performances.
@@lockekappa500 And I would agree with that, but i've seen enough to believe she's not being disingenuous.
I love that you know about
Be Kind Rewind!!
Your such a great movie reviewer! Always keeping me engaged and interested in your own unique perspective on cinema.
Can we have more Maggie preparing herself for the video intros? Dunno why, just found it amusing when you struggled to find the nominations in the intro as you’re preparing for the video. A lovely little comedic bit.
I thought Everything Everywhere All at Once deserved to win last year, and I still feel that way
This year Oppenheimer would be my pick. I just rewatched it, and I still love it. It really is a perfect storm. Everything like you say, works perfectly and all comes together. The movie completely sticks the landing and would be my pick
Editing is heinous. Hated it
@@ExxylcrothEaglewe live in a world where garbage movies are getting Oscars.
@@user61920EEAAO winning over TAR, Banshees was a joke
@@rics1883 Top Gun Maverick and All Quiet as well. I really don't like Everything Everywhere All at Once! Shouldn't have won Best Picture last year
Emma Stone is quickly becoming one of my favourite actresses, so happy she has an oscar for *this* film in particular( I love her La La Land perfomance, but agree it feels very safe, poor things felt tumultous and raw)
It’s cool to see you do predictions :) right on. Also, if you like Sandra Hüller in Zone and Anatomy, I’d recommend ‘Toni Erdmann.’ One of my favorites of hers
That Gretta Gerwig for screenplay prediction is so spot on! You almost nailed most of the categories and also talked about the brushing off of May December. I wish you could talk about the snubs too or what you would hv picked in these categories to be nominated. All of us strangers, past lives gotta get more love out of an artist like you. Thanks
You are simply the best reviewing films!!!
The fact that Nyad, a mediocre "mom movie" got more nominations than May December, tells you everything that you need to know. Unless your movie is about war or the Holocaust or the director has name recognition, they'll usually go for pretty safe picks overall.
I personally didn’t like May December. It’s a movie with a lot of potential but just isn’t very intriguing to me. I liked Nyad. I thought Foster and Benning were much more interesting and their characters were warm and real. Portman isn’t a good actress and Moore has made many movies better than this one. It’s about personal preference and May December is a very cold movie that comes up short.
May December had some interesting moments but absolutely NO ending. That's a big fail. It's all about the ending for me.
@@jeffreybucklen7505
Yeah I don’t really understand all the praise of May December, I thought it was pretty mediocre, but to each their own.
You take a poll of a few thousand people on just about anything and the results are going to be middle of the road by definition. The whole point of risk taking is that some will love it and many will not.
How is nyad a mom movie? It was so inspirational. Annette Benning was amazing
I love your videos thank you❤
The Zone of Interest should win for every category it was nominated in.
It really should’ve won the Palme d’Or.
I've seen so many Holocaust movies most of which are extremely manipulative. Give me a reason to endure another.
@@LisaMurphy
Because it’s the holocaust.
@@LisaMurphy The thought that arose in me the moment the film was announced was similar to yours: "What more can really be done with the Holocaust in cinema that we haven't seen already?"
It is important subject matter and should certainly remain in the collective conscience, but like you said, we've been inundated with works with the singular low aim of emotional manipulation and little else - which can don the danger of doing more harm than good.
I left this film floored. Speechless. To me, this is not just a great film, but essential cinema. It's depth goes far beyond the historical context. I highly recommend seeing it on the big screen as soon as possible to gain your own opinion (which I would very much like to read as someone who shared the same apprehension).
@@FrancoisDressler Well, I'm interested in seeing it now. I had watched the Trailer and it seemed "artsy" in that pretentious sort of way. I don't care for heavy handed soundtracks but I'll give this a shot. I do like it that it's in German. Holocaust movies should be!
At the moment I’ve only seen three of the best picture nominees: Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest, and while I loved all of them I would personally pick The Zone of Interest as my favorite. Under the Skin was very formative for me in terms of arthouse cinema and I was ecstatic to finally see his new film after having anticipated it for years. He has a very specific way of stripping away any preconceived notions of not just cinema but the world and distilling what’s left down to its bare essence. If you’ve ever heard of the DFW essay This is Water, I think Glazer like few others draws our attention to the water that surrounds us and what exactly the water is. Although to be honest if I was running the show I’d give best picture to How Do You Live?.
Oppenheimer coming to Peacock on the 16th. Could break the internet.
I don’t think so lol it’s peacock not many people are familiar with the app still
I agree with practically all of what your preferences are here, I seem to think a lot of the same ways you do on films from recently checking out some of your videos. I will sag though that American Fiction actually is a fantastic screenplay, one of the most impressive of the year so I wouldn't be upset about that winning at all.
So true about Emma Stone 👍
Agree with almost all your takes. Although the I don't think Emily Blunt's performance in Oppenheimer was the best we got this year in this category. So, that's that.
I agree, I didn't enjoy Emily Blunt in Oppenheimer. I don't tend to enjoy many of the female roles in Nolan's films actually.
Girl, you are fire 🔥 ❤
Agreed; I get the impression that she doesn't realise how hot she is.
If you have not seen Rustin I recommend it. Colman Domingo's performance was excellent.
Oh shoot! Are we live? DAMN IT!
As usual, I appreciate the brutal honesty you bring even when I disagree. I thought Mark Ruffalo was incredible in Poor Things, and while I agree that he seemed uncomfortable I interpreted that as the character knowing internally that he’s a phony. Charles Melton should have been on here and probably should have won, I haven’t seen American Fiction yet so I’ll say that I would kick out De Niro in that category for Melton.
Lily Gladstone is in the wrong category, I don’t care how much screen time she got she is a supporting actress in Killers of the Flower Moon. As it is, she’ll probably win even though it would’ve been better if she won for supporting and Emma could have won for what is one of the best performances I’ve ever seen.
I see what you mean but saying that Lily was undoubtedly Supporting is borderline. She wasn't THE lead but she was lead enough to be worthy of the category as far as I'm concerned
And yes I saw the whole film
It's a damn shame she wasn't the lead.
@@adamgates1142 She SHOULD have been the lead, she was way more interesting than DiCaprio who I thought sucked in that movie
Poor Things sweep! 🙏
what about best original score? Movies are a visual/audio experience and music is a big part of that
Amazing.
Thanks!
No, thank you!

Hey, I like your vids and haven’t watched in awhile. What do you mean when you say Hollywood is running on fumes? Are movies dying, or do you think that movies will continue to be made more in other states like NM, Arizona, Georgia and Texas?
Would love to hear your thoughts on American Fiction. You can argue it's political but also very post modern and uniquely interesting.
You should review American Fiction and The Zone of Interest.
Loved American Fiction. I need to watch Zone of Interest
Past Lives and Zone of Interest were incredible my favorites this year. I feel all of us strangers and may december were snubbed 😢
you gotta see the zone of interest and past lives !
Koji Yakusho should have gotten the nomination for best actor for Perfect Days and probably should have been the frontrunner in the category
How about your pick for animated feature: Nimona, Robert Dreams, Elemental, The Boy and the Heron or Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?
What's that headshake when mentioning De Niro??? He's the best part of that movie. Played the wolf in sheep's clothing as well as it could be played.
I think it's a fun discussion, even though i stopped taking it seriously when Bohemian Rhapsody won so many awards and Adam Sandler didn't get nominated for Uncut Gems
That RDJ bit was spot on 👌🏻
REVIEW THE PIANO TEACHER
I think you've seen more movies than most, but what do you think about movie reactions? I could watch movies with you.
ooh i completely agree about mark rufallo, on rewatch i liked him more but i did not find him convincing in the role either. i think dafoe should’ve gotten the nom instead - he was amazing.
Want me to ruin The Oscars for you? OK. Where to start? Shakespeare in Love winning best picture in 1999 over Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line...That alone would be unforgivable. But Argo winning over Django Unchained in 2012 is pure dementia:) Also, how come Alfonso Cuaron has two Oscars for best director under his belt when Martin Scorsese has only one? Can you believe this one? I can't...and another travesty among many, Al Pacino has only won one Oscar for Best Actor. So that would put him, according to the Academy, in the same league as( no disrespect to these guys but...come on! :) Rami Malek or Will Smith...get the fuck outta here! Oscars suck. Can't keep from checking the outcome on the next morning, though:)
The Harvey Weinstein years are a whole different issue. He pretty much pulled the strings 1999-2008ish
Relax.
Agree with you that Pacino and Scorsese should have more than one Oscar. But Django Unchained deserving BEST PICTURE???
Neither Argo or Django Unchained was even in the GALAXY of best picture that year.
Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Skyfall, The Place Beyond the Pines, Zero Dark Thirty, Life of Pi, and The Master were all better films.
For someone who claims that this is not your forte, you certainly gave a great critique. Even though I completely disagree with your analysis of Anatomy of a Fall. Great off the cuff reaction.
I love Maggie's thoughts on stuff. I really, REALLY thought that Beau is Afraid was gonna be nominated for best picture, director and actor(s) after I saw the trailer around this time last year. It looked so moving and incredible. Then, I saw the actual film and was so bummed out that it wasn't better. In the meantime, I hope my boy Cillian Murphy gets his dues! I love him to death and he was one of the first dudes I ever fell in love with in Hollywood back in 28 Days Later era! He is amazing and Oppenheimer was just super.
Yeah he’s quite the looker
Beau is Afraid is my favorite film of the year and I never thought for a second that it would get any awards recognition. It’s WAY too weird for most people, but that’s why I love it so much.
I agree Paul Giamatti is being Paul Giamatti (career Oscar) - perfect! Ruffalo crowed bared in - I loved Di Nero in KOFM!! hell get overlooked though. But you're missed 'Sanrda Huller!' she should get leading actress. Didn't think past lives was up for script, that should win!
Only nomination I care about is Godzilla's VFX one
100% agree with Movie, director and actor. Oppenheimer deserves them all. Great video!
Best screenplay usually goes with best picture nowadays, whether it is adapted or original, not best director.
American Fiction is a great movie. One of the best of the year for sure.
I never quite understand how to differentiate Best Picture and Best Director.
(Also M3GAN was snubbed /s)
How was M3GaN not nominated for visual effects?
Well technically, the difference is that fellow directors vote in the nominations for Best Director while Best Picture is whittled down then voted on by everyone in the academy.
As for BD and BP sometimes going to the same film yet sometimes going to different films, I would venture to say that it's part politics but most likely almost always more due to narrow vote splitting. And BP having 10 choices while BD only having 5 just makes these things worse.
Bottom line, the two would realistically go hand in hand but they aren't voted on the same way.
they just need to add a Best Choreography
Best Picture is what movie you like the most ...
Best Director is who do you think has the best directed the movie even you don't like the movie that much...
Like Avatar great directed but the movie in not very interesting...
@@Vortex20000 So are you saying that Best Picture is subjective (what movie you like most) and Best Director is objective (even [if] you don't like the movie much)?
I have trouble with the premise of objectivity in criticism.
I feel like Nolan should have won before, for Dunkirk or Inception, but not for Oppenheimer.
His roles in those movies are very minimal. We are talking about 10-15 minutes of screen time.
Definitely Dunkirk. His best directed movie
Maybe Dunkirk, but definitely not Inception. His best work was really The Prestige. If there is any Nolan film that might be a masterpiece, it’s that one.
completely agree with her in best actress category especially the Lily Gladstone case, she'll win for political reason
I personally like Emma Stone for it, but Lily Gladstone winning wouldn't be a tragedy.
Paul Giamatti deserves it IMO... I think "The Holdovers" will be one of those rewatchable classics perhaps even a Christmas movie. Although I'd be fine with Cillian as well. Emma deserves it although I had issues with that film. Seemed a little PEDO in concept at times... OPPEN for PIC/DIRECTOR well deserved. Robert Downey Jr. should win although loved Sterling's performance.
It had a garbage ending. Completely wasted the potential of the rest of the film. I wasted my time watching it.
The “pedo” parts of Poor Things were intentionally creepy, in my opinion, and it mostly worked because I interpreted that element of the film to kind of mirror how girls are often sexually exploited at a young age, especially in earlier eras of history
You should watch The Holdovers
Im always down to watch Emma Stone in anything.
She's the reason I watched The Curse.
Isn’t Life Is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni up for best picture this year?
Are u kidding I guess you must be maybe I have missed something because that movie was released in 1997 lol😂
How about those Swedish movies? When they go outside, it’s called going on location.
American Fiction is a great film and a fantastic script. Easily the best script of the year.

I really hope Poor Things does win best adapted screenplay cos I've put a bet on it at 8/1! I loved Poor Things and I've also bet on it for Actress, Supporting Actor (terrible accent but hugely enjoyable performance for me), Best Score, Production Design and Costume Design! THANK YOU!! I said the same about Mark Ruffalo. It's baffling that he got a nomination for that trainwreck of a performance.
Yep Cillian Murphy. He was sublime, he reached a threshold that will be hard to match for years to come. I hope the best wins and the Academy gets out of this freaking narrative about age and body of work and so on. Also last year someone playing a teacher won, I mean please let’s give it a change and 14 Irish nominations last year not an award, Cillian Murphy is literally the only non American nominee and with the most complex and physical prep and best performance between the two. He should win 10000%, I am so tired of the politics of the Academy just award the craft!

Oppenheimer should win Best Picture, Director, and a number other of other awards.
However, after last year when Babylon was completely snubbed, all bets are off.
Sparked the debate of Oppenheimer! :-)
Killers of the Flower Moon is the Hollywood come back! Oppenheimer just didn't hit it. The style was there, but it was filmed with digital cams. Pacing was off. Felt slightly contrived.
They pulled out real Panovision- camera's with analogue film for Killers of the Flower Moon.
How can you call Oppenheimer contrived and then bring up KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON? KOTFM is the most contrived film in Scorsese’s filmography. It feels like the definition of Oscar bait.
Don't think Oppenheimer bit formulaic ? Black & white scenes have as much character as a 1999 TV series. Digital-Cams still look as look ridiculous as they always did. They don't communicate scale or depth in way big rig analogues do. It meanders towards end with the court scenes and anti climatic ending.
Killers of the Flower Moon - When last time seen Leonardo & De Niro on screen ? First class acting!!. De'Niro is pure evil. Some of the best performances in over a decade. Every scene is brilliant. Captures a grey-area historically, a time between end of slavery; yet just early enough to be rife with hidden forms of exploitation that are even more horrific. The Owl Scene alone is fucking amazing piece of cinematic art!
I guess on themes alone it would be up for preferences, what you find compelling, but it's a masterpiece.
@@dankairgadam8841
I’m mainly rooting for Oppenheimer to win big for best picture. I also hope that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse wins best animated film.
I also hope that Godzilla: Minus One Wins best visual effects.
Those are my top 3 movies of the year.
Not Godzilla, I am not Godzilla fan!!!
I want The Creator to win
To me, problem with modern female characters, can be see in the examples of Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh in Opp. It feels like they are more of a story device meant to push the lead male character. They are not their own characters. Nolan is a male director who is most comfortable in the male characters territory, and he cannot create compelling female big role. On the other hand she's an example of a conventional take on a modern strong female character - Emily Blunt is wise support who gives her husband the final right answer. Yet she's in the story just because of him and she's defined by him.
