Graeme O'Neil takes a look at Sterling K. Brown's reaction to Cord Jefferson winning Best Adapted Screenplay for "American Fiction" at the 2024 Oscars.
Loved American Fiction, really enjoyed Barbie (as an Aussie, we love Margot’s work!). Both amazing screenplays. I take your point re the challenge of writing a movie for/ about Barbie, but adapting Everett’s book Erasure for the screen is also impressive, so I’m happy with this result, and a well deserved win.
I have to disagree with you on that one @Graeme. Cord Jefferson winning in this category wasn't surprising at all. He had already won Critic's Choice, Bafta, Independent Spirit, and USC Scripter awards. Cord is definitely winning WGA next month. Now is regarding Barbie. It was in the wrong category . Every other award show placed in the ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY category. For some odd reason, Oscars viewed it as adapted. Let's also be honest, even if it was nominated for the Original Screenplay, Barbie WAS NEVER going to beat Anatomy of the Fall. In addition, Anatomy of the Fall was written and directed by Justine Triet . She was the only woman nominated for Best Director that night. I wish the press focused more on her achievements instead of the Barbie so called snubs.
Graeme, unless if you kept up with the precursors, American Fiction was steamrolling and yes Barbie was their competition considering it won Original Screenplay at Critics Choice, I didn't see it happening
American Fiction is a throwback to those 70s contemporary comedies you don’t see much anymore.

Well said
Thank you 😊
Graeme, you need to watch more movies. American Fictions had a way better script than Barbie, it is not about risk, it is about writing quality.
WELL SAID!!!!!👍🏾👊🏾👏🏾
Well said Cord!!! Truly deserving!!!!

I was really split here. Loved AF, but would have Loved it even more if the award went to Barbie.
American Fiction was better adapted! Barbie was good, but American Fiction was excellent!!!
Sorry I didn’t like the Barbie movie AF WAS THE RIGHT WINNER
