SIR...Tracee Ellis Ross is a DOCTOR in this film, not a nurse.
My thoughts exactly when I heard her referred to as a nurse 😂😂
*Tracee Ellis Ross is a doctor (an OBGYN) in American Fiction, not a nurse.
I can't wait to see this film!! I agree Jeffery Wright elevates every film he's in (James Bond films, Wes Anderson films, et.al.). He's like Don Cheadle who elevates every film he's in too
I auditioned for a few parts and ended up in this movie (scene was cut) w a super small role. I couldn’t put the script down and when I ended up on set it was so well done. I’m thrilled & hope it wins all the awards. ❤saw a screener and loved it too
What a great experience. That has happened to so many of my friends. Good luck next time!
Your time is coming!! Sounds like you had an awesome experience. 😀
I can't wait to see it. The first movie I ever saw Jeffrey Wright was in Shaft (2000). The project were I really noticed him in was in 2003's Angel's in America. His performance in that series blew my mind. I was saying, "Who the hell is this guy? He's brilliant!" He's done a bunch of great performances since then, but it's nice to see he's finally getting recognition and a lot of Oscar buzz coming his was. It sucks that it's taken this long, but better late than never.
Yess, one of my favs. Basquiat was the first movie I saw him and was instantly memorized with his talent. This is a stellar cast too!
I’ve been thinking 2023 is the strongest year in film that I can recall, and then I saw this , and it vaulted to my favorite, passing Past Lives and Poor Things. Wild ride full of laughs and emotions
Jeffrey Wright is getting his flowers and it’s about damn time!
The sister is a doctor, not a nurse.
Wright is brilliant, he can headdesk and facepalm just with his expression.
It isn't just about art that the public wants, it's about what happens when public wants something the artist despises. He didn't write it because he thought it would sell, he was so angry he wrote something he thought would be unsaleable, but then it's extremely popular.
Just saw this last night and loved it!! As an amateur author, I got Monk's character perfectly, but the opening scene especially hit the point of the movie right from the beginning, where Monk's teaching about Flannery O'Connor's most infamously-titled short story and a student complaining about the "Word" (even though she's white).
One of my favorites of the year. Emotionally resonant while also laugh-out-loud funny. Jeffrey Wright is coming for that Oscar nom!
Hi Brian. All your recent reviews make me want to see a whole slew of films this holiday season. Thank-you. Want all your lead actor predictions to win the acting Oscar.
Just saw American Fiction. What an amazing film. A great and funny satirical social commentary film with heart as well. Jeffrey Wright was incredible showing the full range of his talents with both the comedic and dramatic scenes. I loved Sterling K. Brown too in both his showy & electric scenes but also in the more grounded and heartfelt moments. Both would be deserving Oscar nominations. 👏 Erika Alexander was very good, loved her since Living Single, she played a level headed and subdued character that could also go toe to toe with Jeffrey's Monk character. Glad she was recognized at the Independent Spirit Awards. 😢Tonally, I loved the film and would be very deserving in Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Actor, and Supporting Actor. Guess the next review will be The Color Purple, which by the way, covering the Oscar history in 1986 for the original film would be an interesting topic to cover. Fun review, Brian ❤
Literally just got home from seeing this. It was hilarious but legitimately really moving. I can’t wait to see what Cord Jefferson does next. It’s almost a shame that 2023 was such an amazing year for movies. Almost everything nominated for Best Picture would be a winner in any other year.
Brian where did you get that swordfish emblem shirt? What brand is it? Also I so want to see this movie! Jeffrey Wright finally needs to receive an Oscar nod.
I saw this film recently and I can say that I couldn’t agree more with this no-spoiler review.
I need to see this movie NOW! I love the cast and its premise, happy to see Jeffrey Wright getting close to an Oscar nomination.
Interested to see if this one lands a SAG Ensemble nom, I don´t think it is impossible based on all the praise.
Also, would recommend you catch "The Teacher's Lounge" Brian since you mentioned you like movies about teachers. It´s a strong contender for International Feature and one of 2023's best!
Angels in America is my favorite JW performance
Thanks, Brian. I look forward to seeing this movie.
I remember Jeffrey Wright in a tiny scene from “Only Lovers Left Alive”. He did sooo much in that little scene. 👍👍👍
Can we get a best supporting actor/actress prediction for the 2024 Oscars pls
I was blown away by seeing Black characters who reminded me of the community I grew up in. Such a rarity and long overdue. Plus, the social commentary was spot-on. Also, I think your review is fair and accurate; your criticisms are paired with "how about this?" and for those of us in the hunt for a career, it is incredibly helpful.
Why is this a great film? Because it is an unforgettable unique piece of unconventional cinematic art.
Jeffery Wright should be nominated because of an extremely layered performance. The best kind of acting where you can feel and see the character thinking, reliving a whole backstory in their eyes.
Honestly, I wasn't sold on many elements of the movie but the ride I took was exuberant, liberating and hilarious. I found myself laughing at things and concepts from a new and fresh perspective. That ending ... I could never laugh at THAT SPECIFIC THING but it just came out of me!
Few movies in the theater get applause at the end, this is one of them.
Haven't had the opportunity to see the flick yet. But from what I have heard from friends of mine and channels like yours, it seems to be a serious left-field Oscars-contender.
My gut feeling is that it will be this years "Adaptation". Not winning Best Picture, but getting sh#tloads of nominations And maybe a win or two..
I think Cliff’s character ties into the movie because he learns that he wants to live his truth, which makes Monk realize he wants to live his truth and thus he confesses.
I loved the first half of this movie so much. The first half was phenomenal fr
This is my favorite movie of the year also. 2nd place is The Creator.
The satirical parts of this film were phenomenal, but it honestly felt like a false sell. The family melodrama, while well done, took away from the stronger plot line. And the ending was a complete cop out.
Reminded me of Woody Allen. Was I the only one?
I love films that poke fun at the establishment and "woke-ism". This sounds right up my alley. Thanks for the excellent review as always Brian ❤
This movie is theatrical art and Oscar worthy, not like the make believe superheroes hanging from cables next to green screens. This is true art imitating life.
Very funny premise, full stop. No spoilers, but I believe the film did not find balance between its humor and its drama. I really don’t get why this is so praised when Bamboozled was panned. Sign of the times, I guess …
The plot is the same as that of an episode of "Family Guy" where Brian stops trying to write the Great American Novel and instead writes a BS self help book called "Wish it, Want it, Do it" and gets super famous but made fun of by Stewie and Bill Maher. One of my favorite episodes! I doubt this movie will be nearly as funny since it's aimed so directly at White Liberals and has an overly simplified view of how inequality shows up in 21st century, post-George Floyd America.
That said, I'm so glad to see Erika Alexander working again! She is a brilliant comedian that I wish could have had a more important career.
The frustrated writer who pulls a stunt isnt an original concept. Many versions of it so I highly doubt the writer was inspired by a Family Guy episode and it was eritten for white liberals.
Yeah, maybe not. It actually reminds me more of Spike Lee's film Bamboozled@@tbam73
So sorry to be negative here but I don’t believe for a second the right people would win, let alone receive recognition.
Like the Grammies The Academy Awards will make promises, and assertions but when it comes to properly awarded the right people, 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾. They’re disappointing EVERY SINGLE TIME. This year will be NO DIFFERENT 😒😒🙄🙄🙄
Just saw American Fiction. Hot take: it's the Blazing Saddles of the 21st century. Without spoiling anything, it ends in a way you don't expect much like how Blazing Saddles did it.
Spoiler free review ... that spoils the film.
No, it' s a good movie, not phenomenal.
I just put together how this story is basically African-American The Producers
No, it isnt. At all
This movie is a double standard. A movie making fun of black people would be rightly criticized. However, a movie making fun of white people is considered Oscar worthy and hilarious? Please. The humor in this is way too divisive.
get out of here with this reverse racism comment. you know exactly why one is okay and the other isn't.
Huh???
It's only divisive if you're uncomfortable with the truth.
@@mssororsalsa Which is? This country has more problems than race. There is discrimination and prejudice against all groups. Diversity is more than race/ethnicity. Saying all those things, it is a double standard. This movie is extremely overrated.
@tonygeckler76 Denial isn't just a river in Egypt sir...
